Comments: I recall flying into kimpo airport less than a month after KAL flight 007 was shot down..while we were flying @ 5000 ft , I asked the stewardess what is that smell? She responed with a smile "Korea!" I knew I had made A HUge mistake in requesting this duty, let alone this crazy MOS. that seemed over populated with drop outs from other A.I.T Schools...But the barricks in Soule the Service men and 4 women shared was a nice concreate structure with 2 beds to a room, maybe this was not so bad...5 am. wake up and all but the 4 women and 2 beared and 1 medic we on a bus to 2nd div. turtle farm..where we were indocrinated, and give shots, sent to camp hovey, sent two days later to a rifle range when some dude lost it and the range sargent screemed to get down and stay in your hole, some dude lost it and shot and killed 5 of the men on that range ,another guy decided to get back @ his drill from back in basic who was assinged to his overseas company .They took all our Rifles and made us sit in the gym up the road, finally releasing us to our companies, later that night!when I awoke the next morning there was a sargent with shorts on and a testicaL that protuded past the leg hole, not less than baseball in size ,I wa told by Another that it was the bull headed clap, and not to go out into the rain without a rain coat.not two days later I ws on the Jeep to Radar site #3 Gp Oullette, working the radar at night ,pulling stand to and stand down daily, and listening to singing sam.Pv2. davis was the only name I recall from those early days, sept for top Mayberry.I was his fAVORITE hERO, at least till some else got lost on A cinderella pass,or tried to punch an M.P. out...Oh yea I forgot bill Saure and Rick Shaw... the first time I came to the rear I remember the Yaki man du tasted funny 3moths late we found out some one went to levenworth, beacause they traded U.S army steaks for korean dog meat pound for pound and pocked the diff. in Cash..in late june 01.I was on Radar site #1 when a choper.(us army) flew over my bunker i grabed a flare and seeing he was flying into the Dmz I poped it ,and received a ..on the spot correction from a E-4 who thought that the koreans can do it. then he could corect his troopers like wise...we were still wearing pickels back then, tossed salad was not aproved till 1982 ..and yes th Dallas chearleaders were at Collier, camp liberty, oullette, and 1/9th home base for thanksgiving, had a T.v. crew from some popular N>B>C>show that got aired a week before christmas...I know only cause I made the final cut...That freakin cold january with the snow and ice on the ground the cold Manturian wind that froze your fingers, and your eye lids ,I still can feel the weight of my rifle, the bailing wire on the clacker, the field phone that rang to tell us that stand down was over and hot coffee was in the chow hall,60 seats, and rifle rackes everwhere...Fort Apachee , we stayed up there for months while the grunts came and went. but all were brother to me...dec 81 was also the 1 year after john lennin died and the N.K.s' decided to come across and shake the wire on our north fence just this side of the MDL.I aquired them with my gsr . That old master sargent with his 30.06 bolt action, the site L.t. asking for permision to fire, the B.N. H.q. giving him the go ahead(green light)To engage...And the power went out .. so he fired..the radioes were dead my radar was dead so i ran to the sleeping bay and told sgt pollard we had bad guys on the wire..he woke up a guy named oggie...and sent him topside where he found me at the base of the tower with me firing a couple of rounds of ball ammo, when he asked what I was doing I relayed returning fire sargent, he told me to holdmy fire and he would climb the 32 feet into the tower, soon after asending the tower a third round of gunfire eurupted from the tree line on the N.K. side of the border...and oggie flew out of the tower and landed flat in the loose sand at my feet. i cralwed over to his prostrate form and asked if he was o.k? He stammered .their really shushooting at us...after he took over my radar duties and i got tosee the N.K. enlisted with his one hnd on the fence and his other grossly twisted behind his back, I cleaned my rifle in the stand to bunker and with the dawn caught hell for going on the patrol that cleared the east side of the fence....ect ect.god how I miss it and You all. God bless and dont let the bed bugs bite..For were all short timers in the game of life... amen

I could use a few drinks from the Moon club. I think they were called lig meals. Consisted of Soju Pineapple juice and kin. 3 and you wouldn't have to worry about a hangover. You woke up still drunk. I think my other favorite club was the Rendezvous, Studio 54. How about drinking Kettle's in Tokorei. Remember being on DRF1 during the holidays and the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders gave us a special show? I remember when Steve Flores heard the Tigers down by the gate on GP Collier. He was pretty scared. Talk about some wild times. I still remember walking up to the Barracks on Ft. Lewis and seeing Bruce M. Beard hanging out the window by his ankles. It was usually Batson who was hanging him out.

Comments: I served as a designated rifleman while patrolling the DMZ if I remember corectly I did 13 combat patrols in patrol sector A. I was on the last patrol the Tomahawks ever did in the DMZ. It was a sad day. I was 1 of 4 graduates from my Sniper class on camp Casey. My finest memories of 8 years in the army are from the first 3 years with a cohort unit. It was the toughest Infantry unit I ever served with.

Comments: I started reminiscing about my tours as an Infantryman in the ROK and the two ImJin Scouts on my wall, and somehow came across this outstanding site. I served two tours - CSC 1/38 Inf (J.J.'s Rangers) at Camp Hovey (85 - 86) and E Co 1/5 Inf (M) at Camp Howze (88-89). There a few familiar names I see in these posts, including Marc Heathco and Joe Greene for two. Has anybody ever here from Barry Quinn? A lot has happened since, but it was an outstanding place to soldier and I am proud to have served (and partied) with some of the best soldiers I have ever met. Best regards to all of you. Hope this finds you well and in good spirits. Follow Me!

Anyone hear about being awarded or authorized the CIB for Korean svc? You are authorized a korean Service Award that recently was awarded a couple years ago. You are also entitled to join the VFW because the war never ended.

Hoyt Bruce MOORE wrote on 2009-07-03 15:22:05.0
Comments: Over 1,400 Currahees have made the supreme sacrifice for our country. You may have known some of them. But what you may not know is that there is no single memorial to all the soldiers of our Regiment who have been killed in action. This situation is about to change. Work has already started on a memorial, but your help is needed. At present, there is a need to raise $38,000. This is the unfunded dollar amount required to complete this memorial. This tribute to our fallen is being paid for by people like you. The Army has provided the land, however, soldiers, and veterans, along with Currahee friends and family, will have to come together if we are to complete this project. Now is the time to step up and take action. Check out the 506th Association web page www.506infantry.org/projectstable.html to see what the memorial will look like and how you can make this dream a reality.

D.M.Z. (Oullette/Collier) Guard Posts |

Todd Tagmeyer wrote on 2009-03-26 17:40:48.0
Comments: I hear a lot about vets being "in the D.M.Z." But unless you served at Oullette Or Collier, just a few meters from the M.D.L. then I suppose that D.M.Z. can be considered about anything close, or even North of Freedom Bridge. If you did serve there,(at these defoiliated Guardposts) and didnt "Visit" for 30 days like most units did, than its 100% sure that your a MANCHU. If this is the case, the Government has ADMITTED TO, AND IS TREATING VETS WITH AGENT ORANGE EXPOSURE. Both Posts as you well know are NOT on any map and the unit, QUOTE: "Has no Records" I am currently at 100% disability and many Brothers are now deceased from the area from the 1980's from Cancer, as well as suicides. (Guess a Reunion is out of the question) I have Current Maps, but this would be a problem, since that area is still considered a sensitive one. As far as the texts and plaques I have seen with DATES from "THE D.M.Z. WAR" I say to you again, the time you served is irrelevant...WE ALL FOUGHT AND SOME DIED, AND WHAT YOU EXPERIENCED IS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT AS IT WAS PORTRAYED BY THOSE WHO SET UP THE PLAQUE. Its just that some of us dont have the leisure of talking about it, and NEVER CAN. (those of you who are 1/9th anyway) Sorry guys...they will neither "admit nor deny your status" and the Ninth, even after 20 years cannot have a freedom of information release since the conflicts (if and or they do exist)are still ongoing. Sound like doublespeak from an agency?....it is! just thought I would read that for you. Its Not a lost Cause. If you can prove your unit affiliation, because the ghost post isnt called that for nothing. Said enough. "Keep up the Fire"

Comments: What's up old soldiers? Anyone from Camp Kitty Hawk/Camp Bonifas that served the beloved JSA or JSF Companies, Katusa's and ROK soldiers included. Don't confuse me with SGT Nickels. Yoboseyoh Yoboseyoh Yoboseyoh Odishi Upso mon-nay Cuttachogee Ahnyonghaseyo Odishi. Memories. Ahh the country. Loved the Monsoon season. Weekend passes every weekend, hey JSA, Checkpoint One. I was sorry to hear of the disbanding in 2004. Thought I might visit again one day and watch the flag go up early in the morn and listen to revelee. I got in the most trouble, promoted twice and three medals, all in twelve months. Enjoyed serving Headquarters Company, JSA and JSF. CPT Abbott, 1SG Shrader, CPT Zodda. Mail every morning, weekend trips Driving CPT Abbott or 1SG Shrader to Seoul, driving all over S.Korea. Midnight river crossings. Even the trips to Freedom Bridge picking up drunken late bus catching soldiers. Wouldn't have traded the experiences for the world. Anybody remember sixty below temperatures between 86 & 87. Had to run at the end of our night mission so we wouldn't stop and freeze. The Medic Ben Secary's Raps , hey he won third place in the JSA Talent Contest. Myself and a fellow Katusa won 2nd Place with a Martial Arts Display. All the Commo Soldiers(You encouraged me to be an honorary "Voltmaster," even if i wasn't Commo.), Infantry, and Intel. Checkpoint 3/QRF and Checkpoint 4. Delivering your mail was a privilege. Delivering movies and mail to the Czechs, and Polish Neutral Nation Soldiers on North Korea's side and to the Swiss and the Swedes on South Korea's side was an adventure every day. Listening to Freebird in my K-5 Chevy Blazer while looking a hundred feet into Communist North Korea gave me no truer definition of why I should risk my life for the freedom of many. Walking directly past American and South Korean MPs directly towards the North Korean Soldiers only to take the door in between. Delivering the mail to the Navy Rear Admiral inside the JDO building and sharing the news of the day. Shaking hands of Czeck soldiers & Polish soldiers of the day upon their entrances and their exits. The cameras, the propaganda race, both of which seemed a never-ending "Tit for Tat" endeavor. The Panmunjom Tours, ahh, what a racket. UNCJSF-JSA ,once a member always a member. Hope you still have your coin, if I see you I'm certain to whip it out and drinks are on u. I met and married a korean woman (we are still married) who was the friend of my Track Commander's wife. I can't remember his name but my wife always refered to him as Stephanie's daddy as his daughter's name was, Stephanie. My first jjob there was with two Sgt's on a M220.I would be happy to hear from anyone who served at that time. Those were very good days for my wife and I.

Raise Up Buffalo!!! |

Joseph Elrod wrote on 2008-12-08 12:25:48.0
Comments: Reading all these messages has brought back a flood of memories...I never realized until now just what a blast I had in korea. I was in D Co. 1/17th Inf "Buffaloes" 1985-1986, we got re-designated 5/20th which really bummed us out so they called us the "buffaloes" of Syke's Regulars. I drove a track called "Heavy metal noize" (D32) and I was RTO for our squad during our "Z" patrols I used to love memorizing all the brevity codes. I too remember some freaky stuff happening during our ambush patrols. When we were on duty at Oullette we called a "spot south" for 3 ducks walking along the road along with the ever present N. Korean submarine in the lake just to keep the guys in the TOC awake. I never did see "singing Sam" though. Seriously though I spent 3 years in the 101st after Korea and never saw the standard of readiness that we had in Korea. We weren't pretty to look at but we were damn effective (that goes for all my Tomahawk, Manchu ["choke on the smoke"], 1/31, and 1/38 bros as well!!!)
I miss the thunder runs in TDC and the scuffles with the tankers from 2nd Tank (2/72), running to catch the "animal bus" so we wouldn't have to walk all the way back to the buffalo AO. The dragon, Starz, and metallica clubs were my usual haunts. I don't miss the rats on GP Oullette, maintenance blasts, and going to the motor pool at 3am with -30° weather to start the tracks so they wouldn't freeze. I'd love to hear from any buffaloes who were at Camp Casey from 1985 to 1986 especially, Ray Zygner, Mike Graham, Delmer Seal (pee-wee), Greg Sparkman, Shaun McGinnis, Mike Reeder (FO), Bill Kennard, and Lance Lamont.

Comments: What up ? Looking for anyone who served in the 8/8th 84/85/86 time frame. All us Feb/Mar guys got extended for Team Spirit 86 even though we were there for the 85 TS. One of my pals was PVT Schroder that ended up getting Chaptered for too much SoJu @ the Olympic and Mustang Club. PVT Langford, thanks for keeping me laughing where ever you are. Club guys post and tell us your YoBo's names. Would love to remember a few but right now they're just a SoJu haze of a memory. Does anyone remember them closing a club right on the hill in Song San due to an AIDS scare ? Anyway, I got sent back in 88 for a year @ HHC 2X (TDC, shout out to CPL Orten my homie)I left in 89 and got sent back again in 90 to the 52nd Medical Battalion (Yong-San) and they sent me down to Humphreys to work PSNCO of the 560th Medical Company (Ground Ambulance) for 2 years. What a life. Pellino/Carmargo/Zapata "Get the Wrecker" God Bless you guys and all the fun times we had down at my house and at the Top-Hat.

Comments: I worked in the RC#4 mess hall during 1985. I got promoted while I was there, and filled in for our "missing" mess sergeant for a while. We used to jam out on our guitars in the dining facility (or sometimes one of the clubs)...mine was purple! Would like to share stories with anyone who was there during that time, and catch up on where we are now. I also wish I could let my friend Yoon (a KATUSA) know, I went on to get a degree in mathematics, and then taught algebra, trig, and calculus at the local college...because he instilled such a curiosity for math in me as I came to know him.

Looking for 2nd Engineers in Korea from 1967 to 1970 - Any Company |

Phil Steward wrote on 2007-12-16 18:37:03.0
Comments: Please contact me. I am looking for any and all former members of the 2nd Engineer Battalion from any Company who served in Korea at any time in 1967 thru 1969.
Several of your brothers are still fighting the effects of our time in Korea. We need photos, copies of Combat Pay orders, statements of duties of the 2nd Engineers who worked in and along the DMZ or who were in my Company, E Company (Float Bridge).
Right now I am working with several guys from 2nd Engineer Battalion who have multiple health issues as a direct result of exposure to Agent Orange. Yes guys, that stuff sprayed along the fence, around the guard towers and the Guard Posts and Out Posts we were building was the infamous Agent Orange. The stuff sprayed along the roads inside the Zone and around the bridgeheads at Freedom, Libby and the Spoonbill Bridges was Agent Orange. The stuff sprayed around our compounds to kill the brush and weeds was Agent Orange.
Even if you have not had any symtoms, like Diabetes, heart problems, a variety of different cancers, or any other health issues, we need to hear from you. And if you are fighting or have faught with VA for care and compensation for these health problems, we need to hear from you. And most importantly, if you had children conceived after your return from Korea who were born with birth defects, we need to hear from you. If you have been successful in winning a claim filed for Agent Orange poisoning or PTSD as a result of your service in Korea, it is very important for you to contact me.
Even though I am just a former Captain and Company Commander, I made a promise 40 years ago to stand up for my men and to back them in anything as long as they did what the officers and NCOs asked them to do. I take that promise very seriously and now, 40 years later, I will continue to back and stand up for our men. It is very important that I hear from you as soon as possible. For many of your brothers, the time could be very short, but they have families who will need help even if it is too late for the men themselves.
If you can and will help, please contact me at my email: pesteward@hotmail.com, or call me at (706) 996 - 4057.
Thank you.

Long 16 months for me thanks to extention for ETS. Nice little 'ville in the vally where the first Chosen Emperor was born... hated doing the BN death runs every month and the forced marches. Nothing better to do in the middle of the winter than getting up every thre hours to start the tracks and trucks so they wouldn't freeze solid. Helping to replace all the WD1 in Collier was a stone cold itch as well as replacing the rectifier for the ship to shore searchlight. Arrived from the turtle farm and dumped on the Z at Warrior base, left a bit wiser to the world. Good thing because 17 years later I ended up in downtown An Nasiriyah in a mobile shooting war and survived along with all my troops.

Memories of K16 and Itaewon |

Riley Turner wrote on 2007-04-18 16:28:42.0
Comments: Man, I don't know where to begin. It's wierd . . . about every 5 or six years I start thinking about my tour of duty in Korea and I get all nostalgic. I was there from November 1988 - November 1989. Does anybody remember the MTV Club in Itaewon? I spent many a night there. I was in flight ops at K16 airbase. But when I first got in country, my unit was in the field, just south of the DMZ. So for almost two weeks, I hung out with some cook named Tony who showed me the ropes. He took me to Itaewon for the first time - and all that that entails! From that point on, I went to "the Won" every weekend until I left country. Needless to say, I left the ROK without a dime in my pocket!
Does anyone remember the name of the "vil" across the highway from the K-16 Airbase? I spent a lot of nights there too. There was a little club we would go to . . . and we would all get up and do some kind of weird line-dance every time they would play "Takin' Care of Business." I can't remember all the names of the guys I hung out with. I do remember Jim Broin, cause we went through AIT, Korea, and Fort Polk together. Other names I remember are: Wolford, Rita Rae Hettinger, SSG Biggers, SFC Boggs, Major Agosta, CPT Sargent, Parshay.
If any of this rings a bell, email me.

Verifying DMZ stories |

David Smith wrote on 2007-04-14 16:50:34.0
Comments: Hello,
First, let me thank you all for your service while deployed on the DMZ. I am doing some research for a school project and an aquaintence of mine has been telling me about his DMZ experiences from the mid-1980's. He was in the US Army Military Police, regularly stationed at Scolfield Barracks, HI. I believe 1st Brigade? He was sent to the DMZ twice during that time.
I hate to sound like I don't believe everything he's shared, but thought this might be a good place to see if the stories sound realistic. I do question some of them. He has stated that he would regularly drop from helicopters into some of the tunnel systems in the DMZ area and makes it sound like he was engaging N. Korean soldiers while crawling through these tunnels. Two things come to mind. As an MP, is it likely he was repelling from helicopters as a normal duty. Also, I think there were only 2-3 tunnels discovered by that time and they would have been guarded much like today. I believe they even give tours now to one or two.
I'm not trying to discredit the guy, but I need to know if I can count on his honesty before using his information. Any help on what an MP's duties were during that time would be helpful!
Best Regards, David

Lions and Tigers and Bears... OH MY! |
 |
 |
David Fields wrote on 2007-03-14 19:06:51.0
Comments: Hey Guys,
I saw the Tigers first hand, without a doubt (3 Tigers). In 1986 about a month into our DMZ tour, the patrols were comming back with rumors of Tiger sitings. Everyone was very much on edge as the rumors spread. (I personally thought it was Bull$#%$). But then, One night, while me and my team were on "observer" duty on one of the two Guard posts inside the Z (using the TOW weapon systems Night Vision scope)... a Patrol came into the Guard post (around 2am?) (we had to open the front gate... and as they came in, they were nervous that they think that they saw multiple tigers. (we said Bull#$%^).
But then a few minutes later, one of my men manning the night vision, said "I SEE'em". I said Bull@#$%... LET ME SEE.
I personally looked through the Night vision scope and SAW 3 Tigers right outside the back fence of the Guard post... As many of you know, the Guard posts are very small, so the Tigers were maybe 30-40 Meters away from us at best!
and looking at something that close through TOW's night vision scope... it was very clear as to what we were looking at. We watched them for quite a while, as they were hanging around the kitchen (fence behind the kitchen)... just lurking. They smelled the food.
We reported it to our Battallion commander, and were instructed never to mention it again under threat of a court marshall (well they can't court marshal me now :) Yes, there are Tigers in the DMZ.
When we got back to Garrison, I went to the library and found that Tigers are native to the DMZ area... we were really jumpy for the rest of the tour.
But being good Infantry solders, we chanted (in a whisper), LIONS AND TIGERS AND BEARS, OH MY! ... while on patrol.
During that same DMZ tour (warm months of 1986), I witnessed a big explosion in the Mine field at the Entrance to the DMZ. Around 3am... right behind us... we called the QRF and they were there in about 10 minutes... possible infiltration?

Not to knock on our infantry and field artillery brethren, but they went home after their 90 day stunt, we saw them come and go as the DMZ was our home. I sometimes wonder what ever happened to SGT Edwards, SGT Beard, SGT James, my driver SP4 Paxson, PFC Carrington, and the rest of our DMZ family who I have forgotten their names but not their faces. I hope that you are all doing okay and that God has taken care of you all. Hope that we can meet again one day!

Sure would be nice to hear from anyone that was there. I also was looking around and found my paper work from SERE school in 1989. What a treat that experience was. That school sure taught me a few lessons I will never forget. If anyone remembers these same times drop me a line it would be nice to talk to fellow vets who shared these experiences, and remember "second to none" is not a motto, but an attitude for life; because if you served with the 2ID you truly are "second to none" and this will forever be because we were the guns of the DMZ!

I remember him coming back to the barracks from downrange with leather riding outfits custom made for when he got home to his Hog. I'm riding an FLH now since 93 and a Shovelhead prior to that. I'm lookin at the book from back then...Christ we were young. Broke my back in a jump on Fryar DZ and got out in 87. I remember how frigin cold it was in the winter (although its -18f outside right now as I write this). I've got a picture of Sonny and I sittin in a freakin foxhole we dug in the frozen ground shortly after getting there. Softball pics from on the JSA LZ. And the Chorwon Valley escapade! Collier and Oulette and patrols in the Z. Liberty Bell was annexed to JSA and is now East Bonifas I think. Good and...interesting memories. Keep up the fire Manchus.

Kind of funny all these messages have different names for the same places, sorta explains why D-TOC and Eighth Army have such a hard time recalling the various events along the Z - hidden from the world since day one, how can all those logs (Co BN BRG DIV) not be available for FOI inspection. The information requested is written down somewhere, at least that is why I thought we wrote it down every single hour of every single day!?!

Comments: I was in 1-72 Armor in 87 and 88. I am looking for soldiers who were part of an operation to remove a minefield that was put into the Imjin by the NKPA in November/December of 1987. This was a Battalion sized operation where we overwatched the engineers as they removed the minefield and other obstacles (they blew the mines and dragons teeth up) from the river. It was a hostile act and I am trying to fill in the blanks.
Also looking for soldiers who witnessed the riots in Seoul in October/November 87 when the ROK police and Army got into it with protestors and suspected NKPA spec ops.

Looking for my Turtle |

Reuben Martinez wrote on 2006-09-30 17:11:27.0
Comments: Looking for my own personal Turtle or anyone who is willing to act as my Turtle. Actually looking for PFC Nippie One. He knows who he is. I was assigned to Camp Stanley (HHB DIVARTY) from 1980 to 1981. Spent some time in Cheju-Do, at Santa Barbara and on the Unit Police Force. Eventually got the message (at Forth Hood) and transfered to the Air Force where I retired. Lots of fond memories of Stanley though. The most popular song was "One way ticket to the Moon" and the title fit where we were. You could hear it at any club in town, ten times or more a night. Only those that were there believe it. I've been called a liar one time too many telling Camp Stanley stories. We had no women in the 2nd Infantry except two or three at TDC, and some in the Transportation unit (also at TDC). When I got back to the Turtle Farm in 1981, women were just begining to be stationed there, but that's another story. I took my first wife there and we lived outside the main gate until my daughter was born. There were only two amrican women on Stanley (My wife and another wife) and they would close the gym for them in the morning so they could shower. When m y daughter was born I was ordered to move to Oui Jong Bu where we shared a "Western Style" apartment with a couple from Camp Red Cloud. "When I die I'll go to heaven...cause I already spent my time at Stanley". You guys know the word that goes there. Second To None!!!

Comments: Hello, just found this great site. I served 4 tours in Korea, from feb84 until august87.I was a member of the radio platoon,C.CO.102ND M.I.BN. 2ND I.D. These we're the best years out of 10 yrs that i spent in the Army.It was , as many people posted on here the best place to soldier in the Army.I am searching for any former members that was with that unit or other units that i may have been co-located with or attached to. I ran the Retrans teams for the BN.I started out a Pfc, then Sp4, acting Sgt and finally Sgt.My team did the first airmobile insertion the bn. ever did. i believe in 84/85, from Camp Hovey firing range to ,i believe hill832 in the chorwon valley.(that was many combat bottles of soju ago). Our LtCOL Rode with us and the aviation W.O."s piloting the blackhawk had to punch the load (jeep and trailer) from about 4' off the surface of that hilltop l.z. due turbulance. it blew out 2 tires on the jeep and almost bounced off the side of hill 832.We we're often co-located with other retrans teams of the 4/7cav,1/23inf and 1/38inf.anyone remember those cold frozen nights on those hills? We also of course supported the M.I.Linguists/D.F. guys in A.CO. And the radar site guys in B.CO. Anybody remember that hellacious road(path) up to CASEY 39er,we occaisinally sat up site right below the top.I remember a few times going up that hill in the snow and mud with 4 tire chains on the jeep, pulling a heavy trailer, plastic doors removed in case we had to bail out, redlining the tach all the way.more than once we would round one of those hairpin "s" curves and side swipe "audishi" coming down on his "kimchi cadillac" with twigs and shit stacked about 20' high and about as wide. ah!the memories. also the ratt mission deployed to the dmz for one of those rice exchanges between the north and south. remember standing in line at the chow hall and having propaganda leaflets fall like confetti from the sky.our katusa was lee yong won with those b.c.g's on his head. about 15%of our platoon fell out puking on some of those p.t.runs after staying up almost all night partying and then having to run behind one of those johnny on the spot trucks. i have a lot of pics and memories.my best partner sp4 cameron, last seen him as a e-6 at bragg, if any of ya'll remember the times e-mail me.

Comments: Who can tell me about what exactly happened in December of 1983? I was part of the night observation team at GP Ouelette when the North Koreans came over, or did they? Unfortunatly, the ANTAS-4 we were using kept having problems with its cooling bottles, so only parts of the night we could observe what was happening. I have had some conflicting info, and it has been so long ago, that I start questioning myself on what happened. Who can refresh my memory? I do remember seeing a QRF team spread eagle on the frozen rice paddies, lots of night allum, shots fired(QRF only?), something(one?) flying through the air by the lake, something(one?)cooling down while watching through the ANTAS-4, and body bags. I also remember Capt. Bonn (who unfortunatly died recently) saying in formation we would not receive CIB's, but what was the specific reason why. Does anyone remember the specifics? I looked back on these entries, and noticed the Ralph Darrow wanted to know too. Ralph if you read this I e-mailed you and hope your old e-address is still the same. If not, then e-mail me.

Fond memories of latenight runs through Toko-Ri trying to get back for alerts, sandbagging the river during the monsoons and freezing my ass off during the night ambushes on the Z. Can anyone remember the name of the BN Sgt Major under Grange? I still remember doing flutter kicks over a turtle ditch when he caught me with a ripped T Shirt under my BDU top. I have read lots of stories about what happened that day. Yes he shot off a lock, and ran into the "No Man's Land" he was waving his arms and saying stuff in Hanguk.. The NK Army opened a gate for him and beat his goat smelling a@s. We were all shocked at this incident. I wasnt in his company or platoon I was in Support PLT. PFC Kawslic and I were there taking soldiers back and forth in our Duce and a half. We went back to our motor pool at the end of our shift. At formation our CO Cpt Satch Smith along with 1SG Ken Lacy said that we were going to go get our boy.. I myself was scared shi%less to be honest with U I was a young 19 year old PVT. Not short enough to not go, I had like 5 months or so left to DEROS; I already had seen my fair share of events two of my buddies stepped on a land mine just outside of the Manchu club, a Willie Pete round landed just outside of our barracks one night made a huge crator and blew out off of the windows, come to find out it was a ROK ARMY night fire exercise gone wrong and now this idiot goes to North Korea... I couldnt wait to get out of Camp Greaves and go back to the world or even ETS but anywhere would be better than here... I try to but all the events that happened there in the back of my mind and not think of them all thease things I mentioned plus being shot at I dont know how many times; PFC Kawslics and my duce and a half had so many bullet holes in it by the time we both DEROSed it wasnt funny; On my last trip over the Freedom Bridge I threw my Buckle in the Imjin river as the tradition says in hopes never to come back, well at the turtle farm I was ordered to buy another buckle since I was out of uniform and had to wear my class As on the plane. I went back to the World stationed at Ft. Knox KY until I ETSed but dumb ol me I REUPed and went right back to Korea. Now here is the rest of the story... A friend was reading the paper and said that Comrad White was brought down to the DMZ and executed by the NK ARMY and that the US ARMY couldnt retreave his body because it would cause caos. (like there isnt any up there to begin with). So since we were at YongSan I took this young PFC to Camp Greaves with me to show him what the real ARMY lives like. I still have that buckle I wear it with pride everyday because I am what most people only hear about and a few experience Im a ........... MANCHU WARRIOR KEEP UP THE FIRE........................

Comments: Hello My name is Tim Davis I'm originally from Milwaukee WI but recently married an English Woman and am living with her in England. I was with the U.S. Army and stationed at Camp Casey 122 Signal Bn for the whole year of 1984, I forgot which company it was, I think it was Bravo. That year MRE's and Hum-vees were fist introduced and I believe that was the first year of the Blackhawk helicopters as well. If anyone remembers me... Our Squad leader was Sgt. Streeter and you all gave me the nick name of buda. I had also been the only one in our company to enter a photo contest at the recreation center and was always bringing my Minolta X-700 camera out to the field hoping slicky-boy wouldn't steal our stuff. I was a 31-mike back then and we'd give adjima our mre for bottle of soda and two cooked packs of raman noodles out in the field. I still have my one or both of my laminated off-base passes, the orange striped day pass and the brown striped overnight pass. Everyone hated it there but I loved it. There was one beautiful scene I wish I had gotten a picture of and that was in the winter with snow on the mountains on either side of the barracks and then the sun coming through over the mountain behind motorpool lighing up all the snow flakes, that would've been a very cool shot. I really miss it, even some of the hip-hop music of the day as well. I'll be back in America for a few weeks (June-24th thru July-9th) No Taco Bells here in England(grin)..

I really remember when they were going to renovate our billets and put us in tent city in the motorpool. In winter no less. Anybody with pictures of the unit or Tac Site 34, please contact me.
I had a lot of good memories there. Hey did the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders really come to our unit in Dec '80 or Jan 81?
Thanks, PFC Pixley 05B10 Radio Operator

Rice was on duty with me that night, it was a damned good thing he was there that night. Do you remember that night, Donald? If you are out there in cyber-land somewhere, please let me hear from you "Hosehead", or any of you other JSA Troopers Mentioned above,I'd love to hear from any of you guys. I sure wish I had a dollar for rvery time I had to make an announcement like that. I came upon this sight some time ago on someone else's computer. I finally got a computer of my own, so I thought I would put this little message in here to see if I get any response to it. I am quite surprized to see so few JSA entries. I've seen some entries from around the same time period that I was stationed at Camp Kittyhawk, but I don't recognize any of the names as being familiar to me. If you're out there anywhere "Hosehead", I'd sure love to hear from you. P.S. Capt McCrystal is now GENERAL McCrystal.
