D.M.Z. (Oullette/Collier) Guard Posts

Todd Tagmeyer wrote on 2009-03-26 17:40:48.0

Comments: I hear a lot about vets being "in the D.M.Z." But unless you served at Oullette Or Collier, just a few meters from the M.D.L. then I suppose that D.M.Z. can be considered about anything close, or even North of Freedom Bridge. If you did serve there,(at these defoiliated Guardposts) and didnt "Visit" for 30 days like most units did, than its 100% sure that your a MANCHU. If this is the case, the Government has ADMITTED TO, AND IS TREATING VETS WITH AGENT ORANGE EXPOSURE. Both Posts as you well know are NOT on any map and the unit, QUOTE: "Has no Records" I am currently at 100% disability and many Brothers are now deceased from the area from the 1980's from Cancer, as well as suicides. (Guess a Reunion is out of the question) I have Current Maps, but this would be a problem, since that area is still considered a sensitive one. As far as the texts and plaques I have seen with DATES from "THE D.M.Z. WAR" I say to you again, the time you served is irrelevant...WE ALL FOUGHT AND SOME DIED, AND WHAT YOU EXPERIENCED IS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT AS IT WAS PORTRAYED BY THOSE WHO SET UP THE PLAQUE. Its just that some of us dont have the leisure of talking about it, and NEVER CAN. (those of you who are 1/9th anyway) Sorry guys...they will neither "admit nor deny your status" and the Ninth, even after 20 years cannot have a freedom of information release since the conflicts (if and or they do exist)are still ongoing. Sound like doublespeak from an agency?....it is! just thought I would read that for you. Its Not a lost Cause. If you can prove your unit affiliation, because the ghost post isnt called that for nothing. Said enough. "Keep up the Fire"

Comments: What's up old soldiers? Anyone from Camp Kitty Hawk/Camp Bonifas that served the beloved JSA or JSF Companies, Katusa's and ROK soldiers included. Don't confuse me with SGT Nickels. Yoboseyoh Yoboseyoh Yoboseyoh Odishi Upso mon-nay Cuttachogee Ahnyonghaseyo Odishi. Memories. Ahh the country. Loved the Monsoon season. Weekend passes every weekend, hey JSA, Checkpoint One. I was sorry to hear of the disbanding in 2004. Thought I might visit again one day and watch the flag go up early in the morn and listen to revelee. I got in the most trouble, promoted twice and three medals, all in twelve months. Enjoyed serving Headquarters Company, JSA and JSF. CPT Abbott, 1SG Shrader, CPT Zodda. Mail every morning, weekend trips Driving CPT Abbott or 1SG Shrader to Seoul, driving all over S.Korea. Midnight river crossings. Even the trips to Freedom Bridge picking up drunken late bus catching soldiers. Wouldn't have traded the experiences for the world. Anybody remember sixty below temperatures between 86 & 87. Had to run at the end of our night mission so we wouldn't stop and freeze. The Medic Ben Secary's Raps , hey he won third place in the JSA Talent Contest. Myself and a fellow Katusa won 2nd Place with a Martial Arts Display. All the Commo Soldiers(You encouraged me to be an honorary "Voltmaster," even if i wasn't Commo.), Infantry, and Intel. Checkpoint 3/QRF and Checkpoint 4. Delivering your mail was a privilege. Delivering movies and mail to the Czechs, and Polish Neutral Nation Soldiers on North Korea's side and to the Swiss and the Swedes on South Korea's side was an adventure every day. Listening to Freebird in my K-5 Chevy Blazer while looking a hundred feet into Communist North Korea gave me no truer definition of why I should risk my life for the freedom of many. Walking directly past American and South Korean MPs directly towards the North Korean Soldiers only to take the door in between. Delivering the mail to the Navy Rear Admiral inside the JDO building and sharing the news of the day. Shaking hands of Czeck soldiers & Polish soldiers of the day upon their entrances and their exits. The cameras, the propaganda race, both of which seemed a never-ending "Tit for Tat" endeavor. The Panmunjom Tours, ahh, what a racket. UNCJSF-JSA ,once a member always a member. Hope you still have your coin, if I see you I'm certain to whip it out and drinks are on u. I met and married a korean woman (we are still married) who was the friend of my Track Commander's wife. I can't remember his name but my wife always refered to him as Stephanie's daddy as his daughter's name was, Stephanie. My first jjob there was with two Sgt's on a M220.I would be happy to hear from anyone who served at that time. Those were very good days for my wife and I.

Comments: Comments: My name is Tracy Johnson, my father was In my previous post (cut and paste below), I said that my father, Col. John L. Patric, was XO at Camp Bonifas 80-84. That is incorrect. He was there our first year in country (80-81 I believe), but was @ Yongsan the remaining 3 years.

-------Previous Post--------------------------------

Col. John L. Patrick, Jr. He was XO at Camp Bonifas '80-84, and in command in '88-89 (if memory serves). My father lost his battle with pancriatic cancer earlier this year and I'm looking for stories, photos, anything anyone would be willing to share. I grew up looking at photos of and plaques from "his guys" as he affectionately called them, you Merry Mad Monks!... but my sisters and I did not receive any of his memorabelia from those years. I'm hoping to recoup memories I can share with his grandchildren. Anything anyone can provide would be wonderful! Thank you, and God Bless.

Raise Up Buffalo!!!

Joseph Elrod wrote on 2008-12-08 12:25:48.0

Comments: Reading all these messages has brought back a flood of memories...I never realized until now just what a blast I had in korea. I was in D Co. 1/17th Inf "Buffaloes" 1985-1986, we got re-designated 5/20th which really bummed us out so they called us the "buffaloes" of Syke's Regulars. I drove a track called "Heavy metal noize" (D32) and I was RTO for our squad during our "Z" patrols I used to love memorizing all the brevity codes. I too remember some freaky stuff happening during our ambush patrols. When we were on duty at Oullette we called a "spot south" for 3 ducks walking along the road along with the ever present N. Korean submarine in the lake just to keep the guys in the TOC awake. I never did see "singing Sam" though. Seriously though I spent 3 years in the 101st after Korea and never saw the standard of readiness that we had in Korea. We weren't pretty to look at but we were damn effective (that goes for all my Tomahawk, Manchu ["choke on the smoke"], 1/31, and 1/38 bros as well!!!)

I miss the thunder runs in TDC and the scuffles with the tankers from 2nd Tank (2/72), running to catch the "animal bus" so we wouldn't have to walk all the way back to the buffalo AO. The dragon, Starz, and metallica clubs were my usual haunts. I don't miss the rats on GP Oullette, maintenance blasts, and going to the motor pool at 3am with -30° weather to start the tracks so they wouldn't freeze. I'd love to hear from any buffaloes who were at Camp Casey from 1985 to 1986 especially, Ray Zygner, Mike Graham, Delmer Seal (pee-wee), Greg Sparkman, Shaun McGinnis, Mike Reeder (FO), Bill Kennard, and Lance Lamont.
