Comments: Looking for anyone that served at Camp Rice or Camp Stanton 77-78. I worked in the hanger at camp Stanton but lived at Camp Rice part of the time and part time at Camp Stanton. While I was pending reclassification and medivac I worked as the VD guy in the dispensary and also in the orderly room.

Comments: Was stationed at Camp Stanley in 75-76 supporting DIVARTY. My job was in Q/C inspection section. I will always remember the people of Korea as kind. Had many KATUSA friends. I was stationed between the villages of Kon Son Li and Mongah-dae. about 7 miles east of Uijungbu. When not in the field we ran 4 miles every morning before breakfast (can't do that anymore). Was there when the North Koreans hacked to death Major Bonifas and another officer. Tense times for both sides! Luckily had a safe tour of duty. Glad to get out of there when the time came.

Comments: Great site, thanks! I was an MP stationed at Camp Irwin in September 1979. I wasn't there long but got to go for my duece-n-half license and I did some town patrol with a Katusa at Camp Casey. I got a good deal of partying in and drank my share of Ginroe and Oscar. I also had just enough time to have a nice dog fur collar coat made for me. Unfortunately, On Oct. 11, 1979 I was detailed to clean the weapons in the arms room on the missile site we guarded. I asked my buddy to help with the job and I left to go to the latrine. When I got back to the arms room my buddy was holding two .45's pointed at me. He pulled the first trigger...click. Then he pulled the second trigger...KA-POW!!!! I got hit square in the chest! Long story short...Thanks to then LtCol. Albuss for saving my life at the 121st in Soeul. Does anyone know anything about this. The guy who shot me was named Lowry from California I think. I love to hear from anyone who might have been there.

The night the lights went out in N. Korea

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
Patrick Tuohy wrote on 2009-06-04 09:06:45.0

Comments: In late October or early November 1970 our patrol set up a night ambush on a small hill near GP Katy SW of the road to Panmunjom. It was a lightly wooded area offering a good view of open land towards N. Korea. We could clearly hear their propaganda speakers.

The NCO with us was a Sgt. Washington, who never stopped talking about all of his combat experience in Viet Nam. We decided to have some fun with him, so we set up some of our claymores behind some small trees at the base of the hill. We knew that some of the guys along the DMZ fence had stockpiled lots of tracers and planned a *mad minute" of shooting up the Z. Some of them had taken LSD. None of us had,and we were careful to have the back of the hill and some trees between us and the anticipated display.

When it got completely dark, we blew off several claymores and fired some rounds in the general direction of North Korea. The guys on the edge of the DMZ filled the air with m-60 machine gun fire and a few M-79 rounds for what seemed a whole lot more than a minute. The North Koreans turned off the propaganda and whatever lights they had on. It was a long eerie night after that. We were relieved that we weren't bombed and strafed.

We all agreed that what we had done was incredibly stupid and irresponsible. But it sure was fun. No one was punished.

About two months later I was the assistant patrol leader on an underbrush clearing detail a couple of hundred yards from the center of the DMZ. We were simply setting fires in a brushy and wooded area when the wind shifted and began blowing our now out of control fire into North Korea. We were told that we had burned up a couple of acres of N. Korea in addition to several acres of the DMZ. It was a minor international incident, I think. Then again, maybe that was the plan all along. I had less than 2 months left in the Army and was in no mood to ask questions.

I would love to hear from anyone who remembers either of these incidents.

The Demarcation line

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
Phillip Lacoste wrote on 2004-12-30 08:08:04.0

Comments: Hello; I enjoyed your writing of the DMZ and would like to add more history or information. I was stationed there 1975 thru 1977 as a member of the 44th Combat Engineer's. We, along with the 802nd were responsible for the demarcation line between the buildings running North and South in the Panmunjom JSA area. It was myself and two other soldiers from my section selected to pour the concrete strip between the buildings where the meetings are held. This is probably the most important thing I have ever did in the Military. This demarcation line, a narrow strip of concrete between the meeting buildings is still there today in the JSA area. The North Koreans were not happy about this work being done so tensions were very high. I was also there, as support to the unit, I think was the 802 combat engineer's, not far away from the tree incident, although I was not directly involved with the incident itself. The rest of my time was spent south, in Camp Casey, Camp Red Cloud and my home town of Camp Indian.

I just thought I should share this information as it is a crucial land marker today.

Phillip; US Army Retired

Comments: I was adopted at the age of 5 along with my biological sister in 1976. I have recently re-connected with birth family. Unfortunately, my birth mother and birth father are deceased. The birth family has no pictures of them or myself.

I have learned that we lived in Kosan-dong Village right next to Camp Stanley. In fact, I used to play next to the fence dividing the village from the base. I am writing to see if any soldiers might have taken pictures of the people and/or children in Kosan-dong Village while stationed at the base during 1971-1976. And maybe by some chance, it would be pictures of myself and/or birth parents. I am told we spent alot of time by a large rock next to the fence and a playground-that is still there.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Kindly, Kathy Sacco

Comments: I was seaching the web and came across your web site. I was attached to BeachMaster Unit one, first in Larc Division, then to Alpha Company. I reported from Boot Camp in 1973 to NAB, Coronado, CA. and transfered in Dec 1978. I reported as a SR (E1) and departed as an BM2 (E5) and it was some of the best duty I ever had in the 20 years I served until I retired in 1993. I wanted to say, HI to the Shipmates of the Korean War BMU-1 Veterans.

And remembers that mp and officer that was killed at the dmz, with the butts of north koreans rifles, for triming a tree...Please give me some feed back...

Garrett O'Hara wrote on 2004-08-31 18:14:06.0

Comments: Greetings to fellow vets. In that short 14 months I moved around a lot. I started out at Camp Matta (Last Chance Saloon in Shang pa-ri), went to Camp Casey(TDC)but we ex-7th ID guys hung-out at Rosa's Canteena, an old 7th ID hangout in Toko-ri, just outside Camp Hovey where we occasionaly fought with 2nd ID jokers who didn't like our 7th ID patch. We still wore uniforms off-post then. Well, I ended-up at Camp Rice with C Troop, 7th Cav (Yongi-go, I think it was)before contracting hepatitis and spending a short stint at 121. I spent a second tour (around 26 months)with the 142nd MP Co, 8th Army in Yongsan, 74-76. I was there for the assasination of the First Lady and the Tree Incident. We thought all hell was going to break loose. We're all a little older now and (hopefully) wiser - I had a blast despite some of the hardships we endured. I recall freezing and no hot water the most. The DMZ sure was a spooky place. My father was a Army Korean War Vet with the 24th ID. He later joined the Marines and spent three tours in Nam. He died a few years ago of Agent Orange related cancer. Well, warm regards from Kansas and God Bless you all!

Keywords: 1970 - 1971 Turned Camp Matta over to ROK Army. 3rd/32nd Inf moved to Camp Casey. There was a ceremony wherein remainder of 7th Inf Div awarded Korean PCU (Singman Rhee), 7th ID combat patch, combat chevrons and 7th ID Bayonet Badge. Colors sent back to U.S. and 3rd/32nd becomes 1st/32nd (Bucaneer Bn)under 2nd ID.Most 1st/32nd farmed out to 1st/72nd,1st/73rd and 7th Cav, where I went. We really were the tail-end of the 2nd Korean War. Wow! Never really thought much about that until now. I was part of an historic event.

Comments: Whassup guys. Great experience bein there at 21, $5 short times, $10 overnights, dozens of bars packed with girls in TDC - nuttin else to spend money on living in the barracks eatin chow. Did literally hundreds of girls there in the 18 months I was there. Guess we had it good in 2d AG Co, liberty pass in our pockets all the time, overnight almost every night. The morning runs were great, once we ran through the main drag of the ville and as we passed the New Korea Club the CO got us to stomp our feet and shout, "GET UP, GET THE F#!K UP!" Ha, ha, got banned running through there for a while. I actually learned to read and write hangul and traveled around the country with yobos some on time off, was pretty nice and dirt cheap in places away from the bases like Pul Guk Sa. Kinda cool at Cheju Do too, one C-130 in/out a week, rode in with a conex full of shotgun shells behind us. Funny thing, all the villagers lined the road to wave at us in the bus passing by, they really appreciated us bein there. Wouldn't let us off base without havin a short arm inspection first hah hah hah. Hey, some guys memories that stuck with me are SSG Rafael Hernandez-Burgos and CSM Ronald Barker, really super guys. Sure wish I was back in those days, things just aint the same anymore back there since the olympics Korea is a totally different place.

Comments: I WAS GOING THROUGH SOME OLD MEMORBIA ITEMS IN THE GARAGE AND CAME ACROSS SOME OLD PATCHES...OPERATION PAUL BUNYAN CAME TO MIND. I CAN STILL REMEMBER THE DEPLOYMENT OF OUR HC-130'S AND HH-53'S IN ROUTE TO A POSSIBLE CONFRONTATION. INFO WAS VERY SHALLOW AT THAT TIME BUT I CAN STILL REMEMBER THE BRIEFING THE FOLLOWING MORNING THAT WE WERE IN DEFCON 3 AND THE SITUATION WAS SERIOUS. I WAS AN AIR OPERATIONS SPECIALIST ASSIGNED TO THE 33 ARRS KADENA JAPAN. AFTER A WEEK THERE IT SEEMED SITUATIONS WHERE SETTLED DOWN AND ENDED UP STAYING I DO BELEIVE ALMOST A MONTH. I ALWAYS WONDERED ABOUT THE SOLDIERS THAT WERE AX MURDERED AND HOW THERE FAMILIES ARE DOING AND THE MEN WHO WERE SPARED BY THE BUTCHERS OF THE NK.

Marine Artillery at DMZ - 1976

Daniel Glanz wrote on 2003-12-14 12:36:08.0

Comments: This is an abbreviated copy of the letter that I wrote to Hal and Ted yesterday. I have omitted my opinions, and did my best to clean up grammar and structure errors. I have added comments.

I am writing about my time in Korea. When I first contacted you about my Dad 3 years ago, I lightly touched on the fact that my unit, 2nd Bn., 12th Marines was sent to the DMZ area in 1976. We were all aware of the fact that 2/12 was the first Marine unit up there in about 20 years. There were a couple reasons for this...Vietnam ended, and our troops were freed up for deployment elsewhere. Also, our training on Okinawa was encountering increasing resistance by the Okinawans. (I suppose) the logical step was to move our live fire training exclusively to Fuji, and Santa Barbara-Korea. I was deployed with BLT 3/9 and aboard the USS Peoria when we received word of the Panmunjom incident. (18 Aug. 76) We went on alert, and transferred to either the Dubuque or the Cleveland and returned to Okinawa. We remained on alert for a week or so, and monitored news reports closely. BLT 3/9 was relieved by another BLT, and my unit, F/2/12 began preparing for our departure to Korea with the battalion. Our advance party arrived in Korea on 10 Sept.of 76, while we, (the main body of 2/12) arrived at Inchon Harbor on 20 Sept.of 76. We motored north through Seoul around 9:30PM, and arrived in the Santa Barbara area at aprox.11:30 PM. Having been told in advance that we were at DEFCON 3, I personally assesed that our situation looked pretty grim. We couldn't help but marvel at the endless convoy of Army vehicles heading south. While our operation was and still is classified an exercise, I have some facts that I want to impart to you. Operation Paul Bunyan technically began and ended from 18 to 21 Aug 76. It continued on while we were there, and we were part of it. I can only suggest that you be the judge. We did initiate training there. We shot, did dismounted infantry exercises in the Chorwon area and along the length of the DMZ and were pretty much allowed to cover and patrol the whole area from Panmunjom to the Hwachon Resivoir. I can say for a fact that I saw a B-52 fly over our heads at the southern tape of the DMZ area. I also saw a Marine F-4 Phantom fly over the DMZ in front of me - close enough to hit it with a rock. This took place between 22 to 26 Sept.of 76. I began realizing that more was going on than we were being told. Around 28 Sept., upon returning from a mounted patrol with the XO/BOC a PFC approached me and said that we were "locked and loaded up there". I quickly told him that he was "full of it". I said that we were only participating in an exercise, and no way could we be on a war footing. I hurt his feelings pretty bad, by the way his face looked . But, I genuinely thought he was jerking my chain. Well, my belated apologies to PFC_____. About one week later, The XO pulled up to our comm platoon tent in a Gamma Goat and said, "You want to go, L/Cpl Glanz?" I said yes, and grabbed my rifle, two radios and encryption stuff. I climbed in the back, secured the radios, and set the frequencies. We drove up Highway 33 (or3) I think from the Santa Barbara to the DMZ southern wire. We had the Gamma Goat in front (BOC), with two 2 1/2 ton trucks towing two 105's, with full crews. We did some hip shooting in a couple spots and headed west towards Panmunjom on greatly improved gravel roads that for the most part seemed to run the length of the DMZ. All the while seeing the Army artillery moving and shooting everywhere around us. After practicing a hipshoot just south of Panmunjom, we turned north and crossed over Freedom Bridge. Keep in mind that my vantage point was seeing clearly where we had been as we were moving. I had only a limited field of vision looking around the drivers and to the sides of the cab. I initally sat closest to the cab and the radio, with the XO to my right. We went through Kitty Hawk, and into the JSA. As the Gamma Goat rounded the corner of the Freedom House, the driver picked up speed and drove past the conference buildings at about 30 MPH. I didn't see any North Koreans as we passed through, and remember the sensation of leaving blacktop for about 20 seconds and bouncing over grass. We then hit pavement and circled past the No Return bridge and tree. We headed out of the JSA and crossed Freedom Bridge out of the DMZ. We repeated this process of entering the JSA three or four different times, in the space of 6 hours or so. Each time it varied slightly. Sometimes, driving through Taesong-dong, a couple of times driving to the foot of No Return bridge, and circling out and away from it. We were within 15 feet of the poplar lying on the ground. I deliberately blanked it out of my memory for almost 28 years. But, as of the last few weeks, I now recall a lot of what happened while being up there. I have tried putting it down on paper and in emails before on several occasions, but my dates and facts were wrong or incomplete. I recall a rudimentary (two minute) debrief process by an officer from our S-2. He asked me if anything happened, and I said no. I was never specifically told that I shouldn't talk about our being in the JSA, so I'm telling you what I can. I am of the belief that so few of us knew of or actually went on these security patrols, that most of my fellow Marines serving with 2/12 don't have a memory of them. For the Marines that do, I've done my best to describe what we did up there - on the one day that I went. And, tell the truth.

Dan Glanz

I worked as a mail clerk for approx. 7 to 8 mo. and we got mail 7 days a week. I then asked to be put in the Unit Police, my barricks was S-3 as a mail clerk at the top of the hill and when I was a U-P my barricks was at the No. end of Freedom Bridge. Yes, agent orange was used on the DMZ by Co. B of the 1st 31 st. If you have any questions about this you can contact your VA office and they can answer your questions. I know about the Agent Orange because I am the commander at VFW Post 886 in Pontiac, Illinois. I hope to hear from anyone who was there during this period, I served from Jan.1972 thru March 1973. William Urban wrote on 2003-11-18 23:40:31.0

Comments: I have a question for anyone out there. I was in Vietnam in 1970, both In-Country and Gulf Of Tonkin. We were pulled out of South-East Asia and sent to North-East Asia off the Coast of North Korea, China and Russia in September, for a couple of weeks. A Carrier Task Force consisting of 1 Aircraft Carrier and 4 Destroyers. We didn't know at the time what we were being sent there for. I subsequently learned that the North Koreans had come across the Bridge Of No Return and hacked to death some American Army Officers who were pruning trees. This took place on September 17th, 1970.

We were sent up there as a "show of force" to back the North Koreans down. It worked and things quieted down. Later we returned to South-East Asia and resumed duty on "Yankee Station". While off the coast of North Korea we evidently got too close to the border of Russia. Soviet Planes flew out of Vladivstock to shadow us and our Planes, (namely Phantom F-4J Fighter-Bomber's) were launched to shadow them. This "cat and mouse" game went on, back and forth for some time.

My question is I have been able to find web sites regarding an Axe Murder that evidently took place in 1976, but no site's that say anything about Axe Murder's in 1970. Does anyone know anything about this and can enlighten me?

Thanks,

William P. Urban

Comments: I remember the Red, Black and Green worn in the TDC area during my 1976-1977 tour. Times were tough! PT on those cold mornings at 5 degrees with black sweater caps and ice on the mustache. The cutting down of the tree prompted some instant art work in the TONG DU CHON area. Ali came over and did his things for the troops. SGM Bill Beaty was there then and still is. He retired and got married there. Spoke with him in 1997, as I went back 20 years later. Things were different then. I remember Pop's Taylor and all the clubs. Carey Davis and James Roland were two of my best friends then. We are still in touch. Roland is in Kansas City and Davis in North Carolina. Yes, I rode the top of garbage trucks to escort them as they made trash pick-ups at the mess halls. I did club patrol and the like. HHC 2X was my home away from home. Shout out to the all the guys worked Div Reenlistment during that time!

Some of my buddies names were: Sgt. Joe Carver SP Dennis Schmick Joe Brogan Darrell McCuen Glenn Hill John Sanchez Daniel Alden John Pollick Do you remember any of these? I am trying to get in touch with any of them. As a medic I need to know the names of anyone between Camp Stanely and Camp Casey area. There was a hanging suicide and am trying to find info on this incident. There was an American sargeant shot and killed by another American soldier. I am trying to get facts on this incident. If you remember anything or know how I can find out more info please contact me. Thank you in advance for your help. Roger L. Williams, SP4, US Army

Comments: I was stationed at Camp Pelham, next to Sonjuri Villiage. There is a book out there called North of the River, by Mark Higgenson that does a good job of describing our tour. Mark was my CO at the time, and shared in many of the adventures. Would love to hear from old friends, like Joe Baldwin, Whitehouse or any of the guys I served with. . Jim

Comments: I served in Korea(1973-1974) at Camp Liberty Bell across the MSR(Main Supply Route) from JSA. I did guard duty on the Fence,GP Collier and GP Oulette, and also went on many foot patrols inside the DMZ. I was an Armored Personnel Carrier driver. It was very dangerous duty and I remember it well. It was rather scary at night on the Guard Posts, listening to the speakers blaring North Korean propaganda. It was also extremely cold in the winter. I was 18 years old at the time. Unfortunately, I do not have pictures of my time there because I left my photo album behind.

Comments: I was a medic stationed at Camp Greaves from March '72 through April '73. I am looking for buddies of mine stationed there during the same time. Kenny Gamble from San Rafel, Ca. and a few other brothers. Spent allot of time at Oulette and pull patrols at night, and burnt crap in the mornings. Worked with JSA guys, although I don't remember any of their names. Knew some of the medicvac guys from the 121 in the south. Strange days. Allot of action going on when I was there. When I returned to the world I would talk about it at first, but people thought I was making it up. I've kept it to myself for years now. I never run into anybody who did time there, or at least I don't think I have. Maybe others feel the way I do about it and just carry it. I have a 2nd ID decal on my truck in the window hoping some other vet may see it, but no luck yet. Anybody who feels like dropping me a line feel free brothers. We're all we have.

So went surfing and found this site which is awsome. Would really like to find friends served with or any one in the unit that might remember me, or not. Reading through some postings I remembered just how many things went on there that wasnt reported on,ie the tunnel, fired on while flying border patrol as door gunner, paul Bunyon, you know the list goes on. Never will i forget my tour of duty there, good and bad. My highest reguards go to all service members present and past. America is great because of our resolve, and will always be. I'll list some friend in keyword area. Good luck to all my Munchu brothers and stay alet and safe. God bless America. Glenn 1/9 Manchu Bushmaster.
