Comments: Hey, this is just for some people who might want to know. 1/72 and 2/72 armor battalions are now in Camp Casey, 1/9 and 2/9 infantry are also in Casey/Hovey. 1/17th is no longer infantry, they are Artillery now, in Camp Hovey I think. If you need info on first tank email me and I'll try to help you.

Charley 2 Rocket Attack--1971 |

Gary Otterness wrote on 2000-06-17 19:28:09.0
Comments: I just read a comment on a rocket attack on Charley 2 in 1971. I was in ROK all of 1971 and never heard anything about it until now, nearly 30 years later. Could they cover things up that well for that long?? I do remember having an alert in the summer of '71. Everyone was called back to the compound from the village in the evening just before dark. We were told to put our combat gear on and check out our M-16's. We were an ADA (HAWK missile unit) so we weren't trained infantry except for the 8 weeks of basic and the hunting we did growing up. The heart beat a little faster at the thought of going to combat. However, after about 20 minutes of milling around the compound, and wondering if everyone was going to make it back from the ville, we were told it was only a practice alert. I now wonder if this is when something happened and we weren't told about it or just what actually happened, if anything. If anyone has information on this incident in 1971 or any others I would like to read about it.

Comments: I was with my Hawk missile unit headquartered at Camp Casey from Dec '70 until March of '71. We moved to Camp Irwin in March of '71. I was there until Feb 1, 1972 when I caught my "Red Tail" back to the "World". Our Hawk unit was on top of a mountain somewhere between Camp Casey (Tongduchon) and Camp Irwin (Pobwoni) not sure on the spelling of the Korean cities. Had some great times with buddies going to the village. Also some excursions to Seoul for supplies or Sunday afternoon adventures. Would like to hear from anyone who can relate to this message. Really enjoy this site. It brings back many memories from that time of my life.

Comments: I was stationed in Korea during 1970-71 on the DMZ. Lost some friends in firefights, still have nightmares about what happened while I was there. Very few people believe that there was still a war going on, cause NAM was on everybodys mind and KOREA was no ones concern. Would like anyone to email me that might have been stationed there during that time or close to that time. email me at LCVLewis@aol.com
Thanks, M. Bowman
Lost my squad of 5 men while on patrol, I am only survivor. have nightmares about that.
Thanks for this sight, it helps confirm what so many people I know won't believe, that this place was as bad a Nam, only without the publicity.

Comments: Hello Fred,
I served with Aco, 1/38 Inf. 2 ID, and was an Imjin Scout. Class of 79/80. Cp. Hovey, Toko-ri.
Aco. was station at Tent City outside Cp. Grieves and Olliet and Collier in Oct. of 79. We were taking our 10 week turn patrolling the DMZ. I had joined the 38th after a tour with JSA.
We were there when President Pak Chung Hui was assassinated by his Chief of Korea Intelligence. The pucker level was at lease a 9.5.
The only good thing was that the NKPA was caught with their pants down too. Being north of the Imjin River during this time was to say the lease was intense.
The one thing that I remember was that even the most hopeless solders in the company became very professional.
I ended up doing 3 tours in Korea for a total of 6 years in country. The next 2 tours I was an instructor with the 2nd Div. G-2, OPFOR.
If you are interested in correspondence you can contact me at bob@cssn.net
Best regards, Cold Steel

B Troop 4-7 Cav , 2 ID |

Robert Ryder wrote on 2000-05-04 01:26:44.0
Comments: I was assigned to B Troop 4-7 Cav, 2 ID at Stanton Air Field (POBWONI/Western Corridor) in Aug'76 when the two officers were murdered. I was a brand new Armored Cavalry 2LT with less than two months in country and a total of less than four months on Active Duty. I remember the siren going off right before lunch time. How we were briefed on what had happened, being issued our basic load of ammunition, to include missiles for our M551 Sheridan Tanks, mortor rounds for our 4.2" mortors, battle maps and C-rations. Once given our Classified briefing (which included our estimated casualty figures) I was convinced that because of our Screening mission for the 2 ID there was NO way any of us were going to make it out of there in one piece. I remember going through my notes, insuring I knew how to call in air support and artillery fire, if needed. Speaking with my Mortor Section NCO and preplotting some fire missions. Grateful that I was not married and had no commitments to anyone, except my folks. Our 2d platoon actually deployed across Freedom Bridge with their two Sheridan tanks and setup along side of the artillary site at 4 PAPA 1. The Platoon Leader later told me they had their guns ready to be aimed at the SOUTH KOREANS (ROKs) just in case they wanted to cross the line and start things. Our mission was to assume a position on the southern bank of the Imjum River, just Northeast of Freedom Bridge and act as the Eyes and Ears of the Division. I pitied our troops north of the river since we all knew once things hit the fan, one of the first things to be blown would have been the bridge and they all would have been left stranded. Every now and then I think of that time and am grateful that nothing came out of that mess. At that time we had a very demoralized Army, many of our junior NCO's were draftees serving the end of their Vietnam hitch (druggies), our senior NCO's many of which were alcoholics, our young soldiers many were just out of the streets with nothing better to do and then us young officers (not battle tested or properly trained) who knew just about enough to get a bunch of people killed. We stayed on alert in our motor pool for five days before we were allowed to Stand Down. Our 2d platoon being the only ones to deploy during the alert. For many years I thought that we (the 2 ID) had been alone during PAUL BUNYAN. Come to find out years later I met up with some Air Force Officers who were in Thailand and Guam at the time of PAUL BUNYAN who said I was mistaken. One was a Radar Navagator (Bombardier) on a B-52, they were flying a holding pattern in the East China Sea with a load of Nuke's on board with a target listing waiting for the word to go in. He assured me that U.S response was going to be VERY quick and very deadly. I'm glad nothing ever came out of that operation. I then went on to spend the coldest winter in my life guarding Freedom Bridge in Jan'77. Someone lost a 45 Cal pistol in 2-9 Inf and they locked them in their compound, My platoon had to take over the mission of guarding the bridge. My hat goes off to those Korean War veterans who had to fight in those hills and extremely cold environment.

Looking For DMZ Stories |

THOMAS (TOM) Bisping wrote on 2000-04-18 22:08:49.0
Comments: I am presently organizing research for a book on Korea from '54 to present. The thrust of the book, will be on armed incidents, guard post duties, firefights, and any contact with the North Korean Forces. Looking for stories from infantryman, FA Forward Observers and 4P1/4P3, Ground Surveillance Radar, JSA, Tunnel Neuatralization Team, even Aviators DMZ flights, and tankers on Western Corridor Duty. I'm hoping this book will be an educational tool for the rest of America that thinks the war ended in '53, because the last episode of MASH said it did. Also, as of 1995, the veterans of Foriegn Wars, successfully lobbied congress to amend their eligibility rules. Any service member who served 30 days consecutively or 60 days non-consecutively on the ground, air, or territorial waters of the Korean peninsula, from 1949 to a date to be determined, is now eligible for membership. If you haven't done so already, join this organization.

Comments: Spent time in the ROK. Good times and bad. If anyone has information on overflights on the Z between 74 and 78 please contact me. It has been a long time but I need to find others who witnessed the spraying of defoliants on the Z, 4P1, and Liberty Bell.

Comments: In my 12 month stay, I was with HHC 1/17 INF. 2ID as a TOC Operater/M577A1 & M151A2 Driver with the S-3 section. We rotated to Warrior Base twice while I was there. I remember driving to and from GP Collier and GP Oulette every day or two with some officer or dignatary. I also remember when a tunnel operation was uncovered. I also remember some of the great times we enjoyed traveling around and when we were able to get a pass. Our nights clubing in the ville. I remember the story that was told to every new soldier about the Tree Triming incident. I'm now a member of the 2ID Association. Someday I would love to visit Camp Casey again to check out my old stomping grounds.

Comments: I was at Camp Red Cloud at the time the two officer's who were slane during the tree trimming incident. Please correct me I am wrong, but I was almost positive that the day they were slane was August 18, 1976. I am trying to find out more about this (i.e., newspaper articles, national archives, unofficial web sites). Thank You.

Comments: I landed in Korea on about 2Dec70. It was a strange sight that first day seeing all the barb wire and sandbag bunkers. We came to get used to it though. After being processed in I ended up at Camp Casey, north of Seoul, I think about 5-10 miles from the DMZ. My MOS was 16H10. They didn't need any fo us at the time and asked me if I could type. I said I could so they made a supply clerk out of me. I didn't object as being in the supply room all day from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. didn't seem like too bad of duty. In March of 1971 our unit packed up and moved to Camp Irwin about 15-20 miles to the west. We moved into an old hospital so we had quite a few 2 person rooms. As a supply clerk, I had the opportunity to drive a deuce and a half to Camp Casey once a week for clean linen and also to Seoul about twice a month for supplies or taking someone there for reasons unknown. The time seemed to pass quite rapidly. I enjoyed my time in Korea and all the good times spent in the village with buddies, etc. Would enjoy hearing from anyone who spent time in ROK around this time or just reading your stories here. I caught my Red Tail home on 1Feb72.

Comments: I was a medic in the 1st Battalion 15th Field Artillery, which was 105mm. howitzers, during 1973. We were based at Camp Stanley, just outside Uijongbu, but we spent most of our time north of the Imjin River and along the DMZ security fence, establishing firing positions against North Korean targets. North of the Imjin, we received combat pay until September 1973. I didn't understand why they cut our combat pay then, when things seemed to tense up into the fall of the year. I have since surmized that it was related to cutting the cord with Vietnam and "brushing Korea under the rug." I remember that we felt fairly isolated and abandoned, and that our basic equipment was in pretty lousy shape. Incidentally, we were told in no uncertain terms by our commander that if the balloon went up, we were dead meat! I remember feeling jittery about that, even at 19 years old. I'm in the middle of a cold war novel set in Korea, partially based upon my experiences there. To all my middle aged, former brothers in arms out there, I say: they were great times, weren't they?

Comments: Served with Co. A, 2/9th Infantry 75-76. Was at Liberty Bell from April - December 1976 as CO's driver but still pulled plenty of patrols in the DMZ. Was on patrol the night the two officers from JSA were murdered. So was the rest of the company.
Enjoyed most every part of the tour.

Comments: I was a Ground Surveillence Radar Operator at GSR Site #6 MAR-OCT '74 and on Site #8 JAN-MAR 75. I have since been back to Korea during numerous Reserve deployments and recently was I Corps' exercise Officer for most of 1995-98.
LTC Colin Powell was our Battalion Commander during 1974. I have remained in touch with several KATUSA soldiers from the unit since that time and try to meet with atleast one of them each time I visit, but have not heard from any of my old buddies since leaving in 75.
This is a great chance to reach old friends which I am sure have grown up since our time on the Z.
