Happy Anniversary |

Michael Witmer wrote on 2001-08-21 14:49:19.0
Comments: Remember these dates: August 18-21, 1976--twenty-fifth anniversary of the Panmunjom ax murders and Operation Paul Bunyon which brought the peninsula to the brink of all-out war. 1976 is the actual termination year of the "Second Korean Conclict" (traditionally timed from 1966-69). Although not involved in continuous guerilla warefare from 1970-76, North Korea engaged in its largest military build-up since the Korean War and actively prepared for re-invasion--all linked to the U.S. withdraw from Vietnam. All of my research has led me to this conclusion. I'm using this as historical background for a Cold War novel I hope to have conpleted and published in a year. Happy anniversary to all Bunyon vets and cheers to all DMZ vets. I'm looking forward to the new Korea Defense Service Medal! Write me your thoughts. Michael Witmer, Ph.D., history, 1/15 F.A., 1973.

I remember Donut Dollies, one radio station playing Heartbreak USA and the Boil Weavel Song and the Sherriels. We were a ways off from the rest of our unit and had to have our movies delivered separately to us. e mail me at Gnoops@msn.com

Comments: I have loaded up some more pictures of the DMZ from '73 to '74. This is probably half of my collection - i'm scanning the slides as i find them. Included are shots from helicopters of anything that looked interesting - (whats classified?:) including freedom bridge and numerous units on the way from stanley to the Z - & the ASA site we shared on yeowl sahn too. It was nice that the road was washed out and that was the only way to get there - plus, the pilots never took the same routes.
Some pics of panmunjom too but the majority of those still haven't been found yet.

THOMAS (TOM) Bisping wrote on 2001-06-13 00:28:15.0
Comments: My name is Tom Bisping and I am the MidStates North Regional Director for the Korean Defense Veterans Alliance. Please be advised that bills have been submitted to the United States House of Representatives and to the United States Senate, for the creation of a service medal for service in Korea after 27 July 1954. In the House the Bill is H.R. 1935. In the Senate the Bill is S.999. The Bill is entitled the Korean Defense Service Medal Act. PLEASE do the following: Go to the KDVA website: http://home.att.net/~kdrrc/index.htm Click on the "Legislation" button. See if your Representative or Senators are cosponsors. If they aren't, call them and ask them to cosponsor either H.R. 1935 or S.999. Get as many people as you can to do the same. Click on the "Organization" button. Find out what region your state is in and e-mail that Regional Director. This is the best opportunity there has ever been for recognition. Join the fight and be with us as we, "Take The Hill!!!"

Comments: Movie coming in December 2001 with Mel Gibson and Sam Elliott. I have been emailed photos of them during January 2001 at Ft. Benning with Sam Elliott wearing Second Infantry Division shoulder patch. Movie is to be called WE WERE SOLDIERS ONCE AND YOUNG about 1Bn 7Cav figh at Landing Zone X-Ray in 'Nam in November 1965. Sam Elliott wearing 2ID patch must mean film starts when 7th Cav. was still training at Benning as part of 2ID. 7Cav reunion of those who fought that battle was here in Williamsburg, VA last week, I missed it as the newspaper reported it the day it ended. General Harold Moore himself showed up on the last day. So write to me, samroyall@hotmail.com. Thanks. Garry Owen / Second to None!
Keywords: Want to know what happened to 2ID after April, 1964, when my enlistment expired and I got out.

Comments: Well, I looked at some of the names on the list and did not see anyone from C 1/17 Inf (M). It was a lot of good guys there during my time. Bush, Branson, Thompson, Poole and Parks. I saw Poole in "1979 at Capmbell. And I saw Parks in "1989" in Mannheim Germany I got my $5.00 back to(after 12 years). He was an E-6. I retired in 1998, and live in Mannheim Germany. I always tried to stay out of units in the States, because they did not have a real Mission, so I worked mostly in Germany. Note that I did not mention the "C" word. Because I had a Job, and I was not a ticket puncher. I have very good menories of Korea, and had a lot of good friends there. My ol toon Sgt was Filex, he was in CSC 1/17 4.2 Platoon. A Good guy, and hated everyone fairly. For an old guy he could road march, remember the 50 miler in Lewis in "78". You are alright Fliex, thanks for making me a outstanding FO. I did not come to CSC because I could not say I don't know, that was a SP4 thing. My bigest fear was to become a SGT. too soon (alott of that going around now days). I made SGT. at 101st in "79". But I know every one wants to hear a war story, I don't have one. But I will tell you about Branson the Master Driver with a profile aginst APC's. Well it was winter time, the rice paddies were frozen and we could drive APCs across them. Branson was in the back of the FDC track, the track went over a dike and the weld for the cargo hatch broke. The hatch hit Branson in the Steel pot. He sort of buckled at the knees. We stopped, Doc checked him out. He had dubble vision. He went for a week like this. A few weeks later we were comming back though the Chineese tunnel, Branson was in a Gun track M125A1. It lost a track and it went over a 20 foot cliff. We were lucky no one was hurt. The first question that the CO asked was "if the track was OK" I don't rember the Captins name, lesser people I don't bother to use the enegry to rember their names. But I remember that his wife out ranked him. When we found out that no one was hurt. Being the fine infantry soldiers that we were It quickly became funny. Branson never rode in an APC for rest of his tour. He got the Doc to write him a profile against APCs. After that he was known as "Crash Branson, Master Driver". The funny thing is he never knew it, until now (20 years later). He was a CPL, and we were SP4s. So the respect was there. I won the $5.00 bet that I made with Parks, he did not pay me until 12 years later in Germany. I have not forgotten the rest of the crew, you guys know that I will write about you guys as well. Who was the guy that studdered in english, but spoke Korean without studdering? Let me look though my Photos. We tend to remember the good times, the funny things becasue they hide the bad memories, the hardships, and fears. That is just the way it is...New guys don't let us down cause you got some big shoes to fill.

DO YOU REMEMBER THAT FORMER PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER SENT SECRET SERVICE AGENTS TO THE Z IN A CHOPPER AND THEY GOT OUT AND DECIDED IT WAS TO DANGEROUS FOR HIM TO COME UP TO THE Z AND LEFT? I COULD GO ON AND ON BUT I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM ANYONE WHO SERVED WITH ME. I FORGOT LT. HEAD WAS OUR ROOKIE 2ND LT.
