Comments: I was with the Rat Patrol 1972 / 1973 .. We were at Camp Liberty Bell, across from JSA at the DMZ.. Camp Liberty Bell contained one reinforced infantry, B Co, of the 1st Bn 31st Inf, with battalion's Anti Tank platoon and a 4.2 inch mortar platoon. We escorted the convoys into and out of the dmz and ran patrols at night around collier and oulette

Comments: Maybe some of you dog faces remember the USMC detachment that occupied Warrior Base Oct.79 to Jan.80 and Oct.80 to Jan.81? The 105 battery across the road, 4P1, waking us up at all hours of the day and night. Your QRF moving up to the DMZ, chanting 'jarheads jarheads' in time as you beat axe handles on the beds of the trucks...until it snowed and we pasted y'all with snowballs. Ya gotta keep quiet until you hit the objective, guys. The lockdown after the assassination of Park Chung Hee...

MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL |
 |
 |
Andres Stewart wrote on 2008-12-23 21:49:25.0
Comments: A Military Christmas Salute The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light, I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight. My wife was asleep, her head on my chest, My daughter beside me, angelic in rest. Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white, Transforming the yard to a winter delight. The sparkling lights in the tree I believe, Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve. My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep, Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep. In perfect contentment, or so it would seem, So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.
The sound wasnt loud, and it wasnt too near, But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear. Perhaps just a cough, I didnt quite know, Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow. My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear, And I crept to the door just to see who was near. Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night, A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.
A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old, Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold. Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled, Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child. What are you doing? I asked without fear, Come in this moment, its freezing out here! Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve, You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!
For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift, Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts. To the window that danced with a warm fires light Then he sighed and he said Its really all right, Im out here by choice. Im here every night. Its my duty to stand at the front of the line, That separate you from the darkest of times. No one had to ask or beg or implore me, Im proud to stand here like my fathers before me. My Gramps died at Pearl on a day in December. Then he sighed, Thats a Christmas Gram always remembers. My dad stood his watch in the jungles of Nam, And now it is my turn and so, here I am. Ive not seen my own son in more than a while, But my wife sends me pictures, hes sure got her smile.
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag, The red, white, and blue&An American flag. I can live through the cold and the being alone, Away from my family, my house and my home. I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet, I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat. I can carry the weight of killing another, Or lay down my life with my sister and brother.. Who stand at the front against any and all, To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall.
So go back inside, he said, harbor no fight, Your family is waiting and Ill be all right. But isnt there something I can do, at the least, Give you money, I asked, or prepare you a feast? It seems all too little for all that youve done, For being away from your wife and your son. Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret, Just tell us you love us, and never forget. To fight for our rights back at home while were gone, To stand your own watch, no matter how long. For when we come home, either standing or dead, To know you remember we fought and we bled. Is payment enough, and with that we will trust, That we mattered to you as you mattered to us.

Has anyone won disability claim that was in Camp Casey Korea in the 1973 time frame. I would ride a bike up to the DMZ and explore the bunkers along the river. I saw drums of the chemical, but didn't know what I was looking at until I asked the company sargent. He told me it was AO and to stay away from it, but it was already too late. Curiosity killed the cat.

Comments: I served 2 tours in Korea, Feb 1967-April 1979 and From Jan 1977 to Jan 1979
I was in charge of the medical unit at Camp Greeves for a few months, then assigned to a separate company in that camp independently, also acted as special assistant to 2nd Division Inspector General. I visited by order of the General all the sick, wounded and hospitalized pesonel sent to Seoul, as well as escort for discharged, less then honorable. I participated in several exercises and movements. Was very involved with the health of the men at Camp Greeves.
One order I had received was to remove all remaining suppilies of Dioxin from supply throughout the enitire 2nd Division. I also inspeced every medically concerned facitly, mess haul, snack shops, barber shops, etc. and advised the commanding general of the conditions with ourders to preserve %90 of the fighting force for action at any time.
I also served thru I Corps 1968-69, Camp Stanley and also assigned special assignement as sole medical personel for all concerns, including Sanitation Engeneer at Camp Mercer. I myself, sprayed by hand Agent Orage around billets, mess haul, and all other building to cut out vegetation and then to apply rodenticide to control rodents, also responsible for outbreaks of lice, etc. I also know it was sprayed routinely along the DMZ. I know of no actual apraying after the order to withdraw all supplies of dioxin in 1978.
I have a son with Spina Bifda and another with severe epilepsy. I was finally given a letter by the VA 3 years ago recognizing my combat service and exposure to Agent Orange and my son granted Agent Orange coverage for that.
I testified thru interview of the newpapter in Seoul in 1999 of the use of Agent Orange as well. That use was admitted and documents released at that time which allowed the Korean soldiers suffering from Agent Orange exposure to receive benefits. I do know at least one Captain serving at Camp Red Cloud was given Agent Orange benefits after suffering a cancer as well.
I have never heard from any other persons and since I did not serve directly with the men, sorry, cannot recall any of the names, wish I did. Glad to share anything more as requested. Sincerely, Larry Anderson

Comments: Ahh, how quickly time slips away. Reading this makes it only seem like yesterday again. I remember (Name Omitted) to protect the man. Doc you know who you are, borrowing the Jeep from the UP gate on Hovey to drive back..hehehe. Everyone standing outside next day, while they "llooked" for the culprit (HEHEE back on the Z). I remember some of the cleanest GI's on the planet going downtown with the PX stuff from shampoo to Spam and Booze. Which of course was resold back (Slightly higher rates) in the clubs. The girls (ahhhh, the girls) guess nowadays the demographics have changed. Gotta be politcally correct (Geez) the yuppies took over? How the F*%k did that happen in the 2ID. I hope to hear from some of the bros from the Radar sites and B co 2MI. Remember to us the whole 8th Army was REMFS. Except PMJ

Comments: WOW . . I just happened on this site. Reading some of your post brings back some great-crazy-strange memories.
I was at Camp Stanley during 1977-1978 and remember the tree incident. I was off post with a 24 hour pass and woke up drunk missing the base siren. Got in a little trouble for that one. Good thing I was a UP at the time.
Someone made a commit about racial tensions back then. I remember the black guys would where these flight jackets with a picture of a Big Black Panther attacking a White Rabbit. My friends and I had fun with those guys.
Made a lot of money selling bottles of Scotch, Cigarettes , Spam what was up with that , stereo's, and dogs. I was very much the young capitalism.
I am a business owner "sales" and got my start selling stuff on the Korean black market.
5$ Short times and 10$ Long Time , The hottest summers and coldest winters in memory.
Things that comes to mind: 12:00 curfews , running up the hill evermorning , my Captain shooting a friend of mine, serving three tours as a UP on the Gate that was GREAT, the penicillin shots , liquid codeine, The Astro Club , Learning Hap Ki Do , the back gate , putting coal blocks under my hooch in the winter to warm the floor, AND GREAT LOOKIMG KOREAN GIRLS.
Anybody want to reminisce or share photos I have plenty give me a shout.
Keith

Comments: Greetings. I was enjoyable reading the entries from those who have served in Korea, long ago. I served there in 77 and was assigned to Bravo Btry 1st Bn 44th ADA (Kunsan). Being nearly 50 years old now, I don't think a day has passed that I don't remember. It certainly was one hell of a ride. From the soju to the mamasans and "loving her long time" down in A-Town. From selling my 4 bottles of booze to papasan every month for double (capitalism at its finest)to freezing my butt off sitting in the back of a 2.5 on the way up to the Rock,it was all good, or at least I can say that now.
Currently, I serve as the commanding officer for the Niagara Falls Junior Military League Cadets. The Cadets are a JROTC Program here in Niagara Falls, New York. We are part of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Youth Coitizenship Education Program. If anyone would like to see some pictures of my Cadets just let me know. Anyhow, if anyone remembers serving there with me, let me know. Chris P. Crane, Nate Brock, David Neuenswander. Sam the Bam, Money Dog.
Hope to hear from you.

Comments: Looking for those Hawkers who were there in August, 1976 when Cpt (Major) Bonifas and Lt. Barrett were murdered at the DMZ. I've never been able to let that go. I'd like to share thoughts and feelings about the incident and maybe get a "buddy letter" or two, and just catch up. Any Imjin Scouts and JSA people are welcome to contact me, too, and God bless you for your service--keep up the fire! I need info and help for my claim, maybe we can share. Also, any Scouts and 2ID who served at Camps Sitman and/or Wagner in October 1965, please contact me to help one of your own, a good friend of mine. Thanks.
