Comments: My father is looking for help locating the name of a friend that was killed on duty with his unit. His unit was B/Co 1/23 Infantry in the DMZ in South Korea. His friend was killed in the summer of 1967. He was a African American, who worked in communications. This was the only death in the unit. He is looking for anyone who may have served with him, or knows his friend's name. My father's name is William Collins Atkinson. Ethnic race is Native American. (he was a lot thinner back then too!) Our address is Rt 2 box 197 Cass Lake, MN 56633 any replys would be greatly appreciated, and information on your Agent Orange claims would also be helpful. Thank you all.

Comments: Looking for buddies from unit I was there frm 1/64 till 11/64. We shipped over from Fort Sill as a new arty batallion with our new 175 MM selfpropell guns. Something new for Korea at the time. Our battery " C " was sent north to St. Barbera which was near the DMZ and north of the 38th. Don't know what happened to all the guys after I left country. I got out and we all went on with living. Kept in touch with two of the guys for several years but time and distance took its toll and haven't heard from Ralph Bunch or Terry Zabel in years. Any one out there squack back and we will talk.

Chris Sanders wrote on 2000-05-12 12:05:06.0
Comments: Arrived in country Dec '67 walked off airplane into a big hanger and got two shots of some real thick crap that made my butt hurt for a week then went to mess hall and got to eat some bluish fried chicken......... Got assigned to the 2nd/31st Inf of the 7th Div @ Camp Casey, I knew it was going downhill from that moment on. Seems that in Jan 68 we were sent to Camp Matta to do our share of the DMZ thing. Camp Matta had only a few quansut (sp?) huts and Alpha & Charlie Co. had to stay in GP medium tents, one caught on fire one night due to some clown putting gasoline in the stove instead of diesel........nobody was injured too badly but it was kind of comical to see these big catapiller looking things hopping out of that tent, (soldiers still in their sleeping bags with the stupid zipper stuck as usual). Did our share of the guard post duty on three GP's Desort, Hendrix and I think the other one was called GP Charlie. You know the routine, stay up there on those mountains for several days and then you go back to camp for a few days until your name came up again. I manned a radar on the top of the the command bunker. I was on Desort the night NK took control of the Pueblo and that was no picnic..........The radar guy on GP Hendrix picked up a foot patrol where one was NOT supposed to be and all hell broke loose, we lit that valley up with M-60's and we called it "Recon by fire". Hardly any return fire but what came back I didn't care for at all, could hear things hitting the warm-up shack and bullets whizzing around and remember thinking to myself, "I'm only 18 and I sure don't want to die in this cold, desolate place". I.ve got more stories but will save them. Anybody know where I can find an 'Imjin Scout' patch or a 'Bayonet Badge' patch, please e-mail me and give me some info, these items are hard to find.

Comments: I am presently organizing research for a book on Korea from '54 to present. The thrust of the book, will be on armed incidents, guard post duties, firefights, and any contact with North Korean Forces. Looking for stories from Infantrymen, FA Forward Observers and 4P1/4P3, Ground Surveillance Radar, JSA, Tunnel Neutralization Team, even Aviztors DMZ flights, and tankers on Western Corridor Duty. I'm hoping this book will be an educational tool for the rest of America that thinks the war ended in '53, because the last episode of MASH said it did. Also as of 1995, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, successfully lobbied congress to amend their eligibility rules. Any service member who served 30 days consecutively or 60 days non-consecutively on the ground, air, or territorial waters of the Korean peninsula, from 1949 to a date to be determined, is now eligible for membership. if you haven't done so already, join this organization.

Comments: Played for the 7th Div. football team, 1963-64. We were undefeated that season. Coach was CPT. Don Hollader, West Point grad (later killed in Vietnam), for whom the chapel at the Point is named for. As a result of the teams record, we all received a promotion to the next pay grade, including the captain. Also a quasi championship game was arranged for us with an All Star team in Hawaii. "WE CREAMED 'EM!" Would love to hear from anyone associated with the team or anyone who remembers and maybe cheered us on. I make my living as a cartoonist now, my work appears in "Easy Rider' and "Penthouse" magazines and other publications. Fondly remember Korea.

I also witnessed many cases of trauma. When I returned from Korea in 1970, I was very jumpy. It wasn't until the past year that I was diagnosed with PTSD stemming from my experiences in Korea, Vietnam, and other military experiences.

Skip Kelley wrote on 2000-02-05 17:26:09.0
Comments: Feb 5, 2000 Hi Old Friend,
By introduction, I was Cpl Skip Kelley, stationed north, and south, of the Imjim River. I spent many nights, on the DMZ, above and below the "south tape" marker, and even closer, to North Korean. It was a long time ago? I don't remember all the names of my cohorts, at Company B, 2/23rd Inf., 2nd Division, but I have pictures to remember the places, and faces.
In the matter of agent orange: I do remember seeing, both civilian South Koreans, and ROC Army soldiers, hand spraying, areas to our enemy front, i.e., the fire-front areas, and small valley contours, that agents used, to infiltrate south, in the darkest hours of night. We were told it was for mosquitoes, and to reduce malaria infection.
I lost my six-man squad to a North Korean ambush. In this bloody attack, my best friend, William Ashforth, was killed, blown up, with 10 hand grenades, and his face, machine gunned out... We both started out DMZ tour, on the same day, I had to ID his body, with what was left.. My two Katusas, were wounded, but their First Sgt.believed they didn't fight hard enough, and shipped them out of our unit. The sad part of this incident, is my other friend, who had just finished a combat tour in Vietnam, he lost his life, in this Korean ambush, thousands of miles from Vietnam, where he overcame nights of death.
I was in Korean for most of the major incidents, The Blue House Incident, the Pueblo Incident, the dozens of, one-on-one, night shootings. I had one of the first "starlight scopes" to zero on agents, at night, as my platoon, worked the "third shift" of many espionage missions, for most of the 13 months. I served, north, and south of Freedom Bridge.
We no longer have the post-military, friendly, civilian environment, our fathers had, after WW II. I don't think, I have talked to three veterans, about anything, to do with my active duty, in twenty-seven years. We live in strange times. Most WW II vets don't understand our generation. Maybe, that is the way history will always be, in Roman times, when soldiers, came home from long campaigns, civilians dumped on them, or favored them, if the latest war provided better trade, cheap labor, for the conquering Kingdom...?
It would be nice to see more names, in this email posting, from our 1967-1968, 2/23rd, A,B, C, companies. It was a major period of military history. The civilian environment may change, in the next twenty years, and someday we veterans "turtle heads" maybe able to stick our heads out, and proclaim this moment in history, for the 23 Americans, that died that year, in a far away country!

I was a buck sergeant there from Nov.68-Dec.69 with Wire Platoon. I was from Seattle, Washington. Went to the 8th Army NCO Academy at Camp Casey out of Tonduchon. Also attended Advanced Combat Traing Academy in the summer of 1969. All the entries at this site bring back a lot of memories, some good , some not so good, but it is a terrific and necessary website. Another site that may be of interest to some folks is the KATUSA log book. Has the names and stories of many KATUSA's and G.I.'s who served with them. Might be a way of locating an old KATUSA friend. Just type in KATUSA to most any search engine. Love to find SFC Sam Jarrel (GA), CSM Keith Elliot (GA), 1LT. Todd O. Wees (CA), 2LT. Wendell Leonard (MS), SP4 Micheal Mitnik (PA), SP4 Micheal Beckerle (OH) SGT. Gary Liler (AZ) or any other stragglers. Have already found some guys from the company.

Comments: VFW Magazine will be doing a story in the Feb,2000 issue on the use of agent orange in the DMZ of Korea during the late 1960's. I am trying to have the Agent Orange Act of 1991 amended to include Korean DMZ vets, so we will have the same presumptions and rights as Vietnam vets under the act. I have contacted the Agent Orange Coordinating Council, headed by Admiral Zumwalt, the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, the House Veterans Affairs Committee, Sen Jesse Helms(who is helping), Togo West of the VA (who is not trying to help), VFW( who is helping by doing the story) the American Legion(who said we didn"t know about this and won"t you join the American Legion,so you can introduce local resolutions to be sent to our National Convention), SBS in Seoul,Korea who did a news story on agent orange in early November,1999, which made the UPI and AP with various news articles about what government officials of Korea and the US had to say about who's responsible for the spraying, the Agent Orange Resource Center (who says "we are only funded to help Vietnam vets"). I will get this done, I just haven't pushed the right buttons yet. I need some DMZ vets who saw the defoliates used in the Z to contact me so I can provide more info to Congress. I remember South Koreans spraying stuff out of barrels, but of course I didn't know what it was at the time. We had never heard of agent orangein 1968 in Korea. But turns out that's what it was, according to declassified documents which I was sent in 1994 or 1995. Contact me in you can provide info about this.

Working on a book to address the one thing that went right in 1968. Looking for sources of exact casualty figures by month on both sides from the day the Pueblo Crew were seized to the day they were released.
How do you get hold of morning reports for that period?
Saw a lot and what I saw is ample evidence of the decency that is inherent in all. Of course, if we had not had Eisenhower(sp) to lead us, it may have been just another 1968 debacle. Instead, it was clearly 1968's finest (unknown) hour.
Seeking others with anecdotes to contribute to a work in progress regarding the day the 2nd Division Did not Blink.
How do you get hold of Indianhead Newspapers for that period?

Comments: stationed outside uijonbu, did mechanical repairs to the 8 inch and 175 millimeter self propelled artillery pieces on the dmz.Mostly quiet except for the summer floods of 65 and the times we had our tool box in one hand and an m-14 with 3 rounds of ammo in the other hand. Always traveled in groups of 4 with at least one e-5.Was stranded up on the dmz for two days during the flood, helped a village haul their food supplies to high ground with our deuce and a half.Had to be helo'd out when the water rose to high.Did end up saving the truck even though it was in 4 feet of water.

Comments: I arrived in country on October 3, 1966, and was assigned to the 21st Finance and Disbursing Section, 20th Support Group, 8th United States Army (ASCOM).
During my 13 months in country I worked six to seven days a week. Either in my unit or pulling "Charge of Quarters" and/or Guard Duty around the compound.
My first impression that this was serious business came from seeing our weapons stationed in the quantset hut with us. The second came the night of November 1-2, 1966 when I was "CQ" and a call came through with the message "Smoke Rising and Specific Coordinates." The following morning I learned the rest of the story which was to mark the beginning of the DMZ War.
I was promoted to Specialist Five on November 5, 1966.
I have reflected often on that night and others like it. Particularly on PFC Bibee (the wounded) and those that died. To me they represent courage and are indeed heros.
For my service in country I received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Service Medal which was added to my DD214 on September 18, 1999, thirty-three years later.
Regards,
Will Johnson, M.S.

Itazuki History |

Bob Saville wrote on 1999-11-25 00:00:00.0
Comments: I was stationed at Itazuki AFB in the 60's and while I was there I saw a musical Bar painted across the top of the control tower. I was told it had something to do with the history of the base during WWII. I also heard that Itazuki was the first Air Base that we occupied during WWII and that we used it as a 'stike-base' for raids on Japan. Seems like I remember as a youngster at home during WWII that there was in fact a song about "Itauki Tower" and the words were a distress call from a damaged Aircraft returning to Itazuki. My memory just isn't good enough to recall much more than that. I was there TDY from a SAC Base in California at the time so I was only there for 90 days and didn't have time to do any exploring. I only got off base once during the day to look around the town a little. I do remember that there was an Air Force station somewhere else near the town and my room mate and I went there one night to the NCO Club Annex to 'check it out'. I think this other base was an administrative annex to Itazuki if I'm not mistaken. While I was there we were working two 12 hour shifts, 7 days a week. I was on the day shift so I didn't get a chance to see anything but the flight line, the NCO Club to eat and the barracks. I remember that we billeted in an old Komokazi barracks that was near the flight line. And the flight line snack bar was very close to the hangar we worked in. What I'd like to find out is the WWII history of Itazuki and the part it played in WWII. Also, I've looked on several maps and I can't find the town of Itazuki, so I'd like to know which Island it's on and where it's at so I can find it on my maps. Any information would be appriciated. Thanks in advance for any information that anyone can send me.

There are more than Korean War vets in the Bn. We had a full Company at Pyongtaek, K-6 Camp Humphreys lots of viet nam wounded rejuects, to short to go back or in to bad shaqpe to go back but not bad enough to get sent home.Sr officers were officers they did not treust to send into combat so eighth army got them.

Comments: K-DESIGNATED AIR FIELDS IN KOREA
Locations in Korea famous for their "K" number such as K-14 and K-55 were airfield designations. Oftentimes when Korean veterans get together the conversation turns to K designations and who can named how many different. The contest often tapers off after K-2, K-6, K-8, K-14, and K-55. A complete list is furnished here. These locations were shown on a large Korean war time map that once hung in the stairwell of the Headquarters of the 51st Tactical Fighter Wing at Osan Air Base, Korea. Â The information on that map has been supplemented with other listings which have surfaced over the years. Some K-Numbers have been listed by slightly different locations - all are listed.
 Â
K-1 Pusan-West Air Base - South East Point of  Peninsula
K-2 Taegu -Taegu Air Base
K-3 Pohang - P'ohang Airdrome
K-4 Pusan - Sachon Airfield
During the Korean War this Airfield was home to the 35th Fighter Interceptor Wing.
K-5 Taejon - Taejon Airfield- Taejon Airdrome
K-6 Pyongtaek Air Field - P'Yong Taek Airdrome - Desiderio Army Airfield, Camp Humphreys, Pyong Taek
K-7 Kwanju Air Base
K-8 Kunsan Air Base,
Construction of the Airfield at Kunsan, Korea began in July 1951, by the 931st Engineer Aviation Group. Kunsan      was APO 64 which later changed to APO SF 96264.  APO 64 at the Kunsan port area  was also home to the 14th    Transportation Battalion.
K-9 Pusan East Airfield - Pusan-East Air Base
K-10 Pusan-Chin Hae  - Chinae Air Base - Chinhae Airfield
K-13 Suwon Air Base
On 20 September 1950, 'B' Battery, 92d Armored Field Artillery, the "Red Devils", fired the first rounds they expended during the Korea War at Suwon. Â In September 1951, the 931st Engineer Aviation Group extended the runway at Suwon and constructed taxiways and parking aprons there. Construction was hampered by rain and extremely bad weather at Suwon airstrip, where the subsoil was a spongy mass (or mess) although air traffic was heavy during that period.
Suwon Air Base is a Republic of Korea Air Base, on which is stationed the 1st Battalion, 43d Air Defense Artillery, a unit of the 6th Cavalry Brigade. The unit's mission is to defend the air base against attack.

Comments: I'm very grateful for this website. At last I might be able to re-establish contact with some of the guys who shared some of the experiences I'll never forget. I was in the Recon platoon for the 2nd BN 23rd Inf(Mech) from May 1968 to Aug 1969. Our platoon was the Quick Reaction Force for the battalion, and we would respond to any sightings of UI's(unidentified infiltrators) along our sector of the DMZ. We might be at the movie theater watching a movie, and hear "Recon..move out!" We'd tear out of the theater, climb onto our M-114 armored recon tracks, and race to the Zone so fast that our vehicles would slide across the road when negotiating curves. It was exhilarating! If any of you guys (SGT Foster's Hoods) are visiting this website, I'd like to hear from you. I'm still in contact with Dave Paganini. He lives close to me.

Comments: I just became aware of your project last night(3-3-99) while reading an article about your website. After reviewing your efforts I can understand why you wish to keep going. This is one of the most interesting sites I have found. Having served with the USAF at Osan AB from 64-65, it has brought back many memories, even 10 yrs after the War there were still many reminders of what had happened. Land mines were still being set off and the deprivations of the war were still fresh in the minds of our servicemen who were there in 51-55 and our Korean Friends. I shall always cherish the time I spent there and the friends I made. I am sending a check by mail, it's not a lot but I hope it will in someway help you to continue with this outstanding project. Comments: Thank you for your articles about the DMZ. I appreciate that someone acknowledges that what we did on the DMZ was worthy of consideration I was in Korea from Feb 68 to Mar 69. Spent time on both sides of the Imjim River. We did military training maneuvers throughout the back country of S Korea. I also learned how cold or wet Korea can be. We guarded freedom bridge and a did secondary line duty along the Imjim River. One night we took a rubber raft out to an island to do ambush patrol. Forgot that the river rises with the tides and the rising river floated our secretly hidden craft away. There was much debate up and down the river about whether the unknown floating object should be shot or not. June thru Sept was spent on the DMZ. We did one week in the fox holes along the fence and the rest of the time on patrol in the DMZ. Nights were long, sometimes very tense, gunfire, grenades popping, and the chattering of NK propaganda speakers were a nightly affair. During this time there were several shooting incidents swirling around us. A company on our right successfully ambushed a NK, and the NK assaulted C Company on our left. There were several near accidents, and we even tried to engaged a couple of unknown sounds of possible human origin. We know they were there because holes in in fence would mysteriously appear. I also learned how wet and hot and mosquito invested DMZ can be. I believe I lost a Katusa friend a few days after I left for home who was wounded and then killed in a helicopter accident. Would like to know more about this.I would be interested to hear from anyone who was in my unit or was there at this time.

I was with the Train Security Military Police and we rode empty railcars to Puson and provided necessary security all the way back up the pensulia to MoonSoonEe(?) It turned out to be one of more enjoyable tours of duty.I had a houseboy at the time (1960-61) named Kim and now the President of the country named Kim looks just like him.
Thanks for the reflections. Leo Harrison, Commander Veterans of the Vietnam War,Post#1, Albany Ga.

Comments: This is my second posting to the site. My first was under 8055 MASH. This should go under 43rd Surgical Hospital (MA) as it was known then. Although we were never in any physical danger that we knew of during 1965 and 1966, working in a surgical hospital brought us into contact with all the horrors of war through the numbers of children (and adults) maimed and burned by "leftover" ordnance. I don't think a week goes by that I don't think of the children we treated there, or my many friends whom I haven't seen in 30 years. Would like to hear from others who were at the "Forty-Thirty" in 65-66. Please keep up the good work you're doing.

Comments: I was in Korea in 68-69. My main camp was Camp Beard, however I was stationed at the JSA compound. I was on the searchlight tank that went to position every evening and returned in the morning. Our position was behind the trench where the fence went into the Imjim River. There were 3 other tanks on the DMZ at the time. They swept the roads in the evening and mornings for land mines. I have many memories of the nights on the DMZ that are with me always. We gave light support during the many firefights that went on. During lulls we scanned in the infared mode.I was also at Hyon ga ri and Chip Po Ri, I'm not sure of the spelling. We also participated in blocking forces on the south bank when commandos got thru.

Your article The Forgotten DMZ brought back old memories some good and some bad. I know of my own experience it was hard to tell people state side just what went on in Korea in 1966 - 1967. For the most part they felt as I did before going there, that the war in Korea was over in the fifty's. Well, I get started and can't stop sometimes.
Many thanks, Cyril Tauzin

Comments: Your project is excellent. The DMZ War article was right to the point. It gave definition to who we are, DMZ War Veterans.
I was with the 21st Finance Section (Disbursing), Ascom. I arrived in country on 3OCT66 and Departed on 27OCT67. I remember PFC David L. Bebee while he was in the 121st Evacuation Hospital. General Bonesteel presented him with the Purple Heart.
I also remember working constantly. One night while on "Charge of Quarters" I received a phone call of "smoke rising," need I say more.
I never was made aware that we were entitled to a campaign medal, or anything else until a few months ago. I'm sure this applies to others too!

Comments: My father was a LtC., in the Army. He was in Korea for about 13 months in late 1963-64. I know that he left right after I was born, and came back when I was about 13 or 14 months old. He specialized, I think, with chemicals. I know that he has a few pictures of mustard gas victims. I will find out more when I go to visit my mother tongight. I guess I just want to let people know that he passed away on Wednesday, October 21, 1998. He was 67 yrs old. His name is William A. Norton. If there is anyone out there who may have known him, I would like them to know. When I find out more about what exactly he did in Korea, and what group he was with I will let you know.

Comments: I didn't know any of these sites existed untill today. Like my father I am a veteran of Korea. Although I saw no action in Korea, I was unaware that the period of time I was stationed in the 2nd Div. was considered to be hot. I was stationed near the DMZ at a camp called Blue Lancer Valley near the village of Nulori. My tour was 13 months and was from Jan 01,1966 to Feb 01,1967. I was there when the North Koreans took the Pueblo. What a surprise to find that I was caught up in a conflict and didn't know it. Well, I want you all to know, that I salute you. Your courage and commitment to your country have made you heros. You have not been forgotten. Many men like myself, who were sent to Vietnam, understand perfectly well, your sacrifice. Thank you and welcome home. Norman Wallace

Comments: Ted:
The article by Maj. Jenerette on the DMZ war was very interesting. My dad as a young major was an advisor to the ROKA at the time (66-68) and was closely involved in a lot that was happening. He retired as a LTC in '71 and currently lives in Frisco, Tx in the Dallas area. Keep me posted on any further developments, I will visit your site again. Thanks, Gary Singletary
