Agent Orange - Camp Caey '68-69

Comments: In late 2000, the VA authorized disability status for vets who served in Korea during 1968-69, were exposed to Agent Orange, and who now have one of the diseases they listed for exposure to Agent Orange in Viet Nam. They stated that the spraying was along the DMZ only, and they listed a number of units that likely may have been exposed. My unit was not one of them.

I applied in March, 2003 for disability due to Multiple Myeloma (MM), a bone marrow/blood cancer for which there is no cure. The VA grants 100% disability to vets who have MM and served in Viet Nam (presumptive eligibility). For those who were in Korea, we have to show how it is likely that we were exposed to AO before they will grant us the same disability.

I served in the Replacement Detachment and the Officer Records Section of the Admin Division of the 7th Infantry Division. We were located just outside the main village of Tong Du Chon (TDC), now a city of 70,000. I'm seeking others who served at Camp Casey during 1968-69. Particularly any who suffered from a serious or life-threatening illness at any time (even recently) since leaving Camp Casey? Or any who might provide evidence of the presence of AO in or around Camp Casey.

I AM ALSO SEEKING ANY CASES IN WHICH SOLDIERS FROM CAMP CASEY (1968-69) WERE GRANTED DISABILITY, PARTICULARLY IF IT WAS RELATED TO EXPOSURE TO AGENT ORANGE. ALSO, ANY CASES OF DISABILITY SPECIFICALLY DUE TO MULTIPLE MYELOMA.

Do you know of any evidence that AO was actually sprayed in the Camp Casey area during that time period? I suspect it was, and have been told so by one or two vets, but it is difficult to validate these statements. Since Camp Casey is only 11 miles south of the DMZ, it is VERY likely that the ground water was contaminated by the spraying at the DMZ. Other reports also indicate that the "mist spray" could travel as much as 10 miles or more, thus also putting Camp Casey in a vulnerable position to receive spray from the DMZ.

Unless I can demonstrate how, where, and when I was exposed to Agent Orange, it is unlikely the VA will grant my request for disability, even though I have Multiple Myeloma, and have never been exposed to Dioxin or other herbacides except for the likely exposure in Korea in 1968 and 1969. The dormancy period for this disease after exposure is as much as 35 years! I was diagnosed on 9/26/01.

I desperately need any helpful information in the next 6 days to respond to questions the VA has raised since I filed my claim for disability. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give in this regard.

Tom Courbat SP5/E5 - Camp Casey - 7th Admin. Div. '68-'69 (909) 677-6451

Tom Courbat, Murrieta, CA, DOB 1/21/47, DX 9/26/01 MM IgG Lamda light chain secretor, stage IIIA. 10 sessions radiation, 10/01; 4 rounds VAD (12/01-3/02), Ativan, Celexa, Coumadin (4mg), Zometa monthly. Stem cell harvest at Cedars Sinai 10/21-10/24/02. Now on Medrol (96mg/once/wk) and Thalomid (100mg/day).

Keywords: I'm embarrased to say I can't remember the names of the folks I served with, and I was there 14 months, from 6/68-8/69. I have recently been diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a bone marrow/ blood cancer for which there is no cure. The treatment is working well, though, and I am now in remission. I believe I may have been exposed to Agent Orange while at Camp Casey, causing this disease to fester until it was recently diagnosed. Believe it or not, it can take up to 35 years or longer to manifest itself!

I Can remember that the unit being very short handed and often coming off of the OPS (Observation Posts) And having to go onto stakeouts or to the motor pool. NOT Only did we have to patrol the DMZ duties, but had to do our regular duties as well.Chow and Hot water were often at a minimum, but the donut dollies who came around once a week was a real welcome. Comments: It's been a long time that DMZ veterans are being recognized for their brave service in defense of South Korea and the world. Other peacekeepers of today are being recognized with medals and badges and patches, why not? the DMZ veterans. Sometimes, our country overlooks this type of infractions and should be reminded that the service performed was just as hostile.

I am a veteran of WWII and Vietnam, as well as DMZ Korea. Let's make it happen by resolution or whatever it takes to make new lawmakers and administrations aware of this infraction.

Comments: DoD to recognize Korea vets with medal by Tesia Williams

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, Jan. 2, 2003) - A new defense medal will eventually be issued to military members who served in the Republic of Korea, or adjacent waters, after July 28, 1954.

The new Korea Defense Service Medal was authorized by the Fiscal Year 2003 Defense Authorization Act.

The U.S. Korea Defense Service Medal should not be confused with the foreign service Republic of Korea War Service Medal that was authorized for U.S. military personnel who served in Korea between June 25, 1950 and July 27, 1953, officials said.

The new medal will be for those who served in Korea after the war, up to an undetermined ending date, said officials from the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

Given the volume of anticipated recipients, officials said the time it will take to award the KDSM is difficult to estimate. They said it will take time to identify, notify and award the medal to eligible former service members.

Some of the actions that must be completed are: designing the medal, obtaining necessary funding, developing policy for issuance and wear and processing to include verification of service and then award of the medal.

The first three actions should be completed in approximately four to six months, officials said. However, based on previous experiences when creating service medals the entire process can take up to a year, officials added.

My fahter asked one more time, then shot several rounds in the area where the squeaking came from. The next day during daylight hours, a team of soldiers went into the brush searching for a body and found a North Korean with a weapon.
