Comments: I served with the 5th of the 38th FA (Steel Behind The Rock) during 2/1968 to 2/1969. I was the battalion clerk in HHC and the Company clerk at Battery A for my last few months in Korea.

During most of my time the units (HHC & Btry A) were located at Camp Summerall. During the early winter we moved to another camp (can't remember the name) but the villiage Pam-go-ji was the closest one to the camp.

I have many photos and slides (100 - 200) from that time. Unfortunately, I have forgotten some of the names of men I served with. Would like to share some information with anyone who served during that time and also exchange any photos. Most of mine are on-line and can be transmitted as attachments through e-mail.

Keywords: Camp Summerall, San-ju-ri, Pam-go-ji, LTCs Kravitz & Allbritten (sp?), P. Sussman, Waco, Sp4 Lay, Lt Garrett, 1st Sgt Zubinski (sp?), SFC Harris, PFC Chip, etc.

He rescued small boy from drowning in either a lake or river. I believe at this time his rank was 1st LT. I don't know if he was with the Calvary or the Infantry at this time. That is about all I know about that timeframe. He was KIA on 8/22/68 in Bien Hoa, S. Vietnam, Delta Co. Commander, 1st Inf Div/26th Regiment. I have heard from many of Vietnam Vietnams that knew him while in country. I would like to learn about the time he was in Korea. Comments: I served with the 1st Howitzer Battalion 79th Artillery, 7th Infantry Division. I was with Charley Battery at Camp Paine. The HHQ Battery was at Camp Hartell and the 3 gun batteries were at Camp Paine. I was in Korea from Dec. 1965 to Jan 1967. We were artillery support for the 2nd Infantry Division up on the DMZ. I went out out DMZ patrol for two weeks. Serveral shots were fired at us by the North Koreans no injury's or caualties. Another patrol was not as fortunate as ours and suffered casualties. It was a very active time up on the DMZ. Our unit was supposed to stay and support the 2nd Infantry in case the North decided to attack. The infantry was supposed to pull back and protect Seoul. Anyone who was there at that time and wants to contact me and re-live some old times, feel free.

Comments: I took Basic training at Ft. Polk, La. from Jan '69 to Mar '69. I then was sent to Ft. Knox, Ky, where I took AIT, as a tanker. We trained on the old M-48's. I then got orders for Korea, where I was assigned to 4/7 Cav, in Jul '69. We had the M-48's for about 2 months, but then they brought in brand new M-551 Sheridans. They sent a civilian team with them to train us. They were excellent vehicles, and we received very good training. I was a tanker just for a short while, when they needed 11D scouts. So I got a primary MOS of 11D, with a secondary of 11E. I remember doing a lot of patrol and guard duty up on the DMZ. As a matter of fact, I drew hostile fire pay for 8 months. And yes, there were numerous firefights and contacts. With Nam going on, the politicians didn't want the American people to know that there was combat going on anywhere else. In Aug. '70, I received orders to go to Germany. I was there, in a tank battalion (3/63 Armor) for about 3 months. I then volunteered to go to Viet Nam. I hated the duty in Germany, way too much spit and shine. There was also a lot of drug problems. And after being in 4/7 Cav (which was an excellent outfit), and pretty much in a combat situation in Korea, I felt that I should be in Nam! So much for the thinking of a 20 year old! Anyway I got to Nam in late Jan.'71, and I was assigned to 'C' Trp. 3/5 Cav. We were attached to the 1/5 (Mech) Inf Brigade, which was headquartered at Dong Ha, which, ironically enough was, on the DMZ! We were called "the Bastard Cav", that was because our parent Div was the 9th Inf. But that Div was pulled out of Nam, about a year before. So we were attached to the 1/5 (Mech), then later (around Jul'71) they stood down, so we were attached to the 101st Airborne. At that time we were the last American combat unit north of Hue. We worked around Khe Sanh, Cam Lo, "the Rockpile", and Quang Tri. That whole area was pretty bad, with a lot of Dinks. All were NVA, and excellent soldiers. I was on a M-551 Sheridan for a short while, but then they needed "Grunts", so they changed my MOS to 11B. I did get a little bit of shrapnel once, and I also came down with malaria. But to this day, I consider the experience and training that I received in 4/7 Cav in Korea as the basis for getting me through Nam. We lost a lot of good guys in the 3/5 Cav, but I made it back in one piece. I've had some problems, (Agent Orange, flash-backs, etc.), but I did make it back. And like I say it was the 13 months in Korea, with 4/7 Cav, that allowed that to happen! I've always had the most respect for those that did combat duty in "the Land of the Morning Calm"! May God Bless all those that have been, and are now in uniform!

Comments: During the time I was stationed in Korea I took hundreds of photos but I only have a hand full left due to a fire. A lot of the pictures I took were black and white and developed locally, and I saw a lot of them being sold and traded locally. I am especially interested in photos of the crew of the pueblo crossing freedom bridge. If you have any pictures of the z or villages close like shangperi (sp) would you please send me a copy so I can show my family and desendents conditions and where I was during some of my military career. Thank You

Looking for mainly common areas, like the PX, snack bar, NCO and EM clubs, Unit HQs, front gate, the Ville, etc. I was with D Co 4th Maint. Bn., which was at Cp. General Malloy, Captain Guy Malloy Company D Rifle Company did not interceede with N Korean transgressors - 8th Army Incident. Many Officers' career trashed due to inefficiencies, caused purportedly by PFC Walter J. Walters (Junior) who was best of friends with Donald R. Fossett and CWO Ira J. Hart
