Comments: I was deployed to Kangnung (K18) several times in 1967, 1968, and 1969. I maintained the Crypto Equipment in the Mobile Van at the top of the hill. Looking for anyone that remembers me to see if you will vouch for me that I was there so that my claim with the VA can be approved for exposure to Agent Orange resulting in Prostate Cancer. I would be all set if the Military kept copies of TDY orders, wouldn't I??? Looking for TSgt Leonard who was there with me and SSgt Harold F Hannon III. Thanks

Comments: If you were in Korea in the 60s, 70s, or eightys and have medical problems but are being denied by the VA,don't go it alone. We are looking to help our men to hopefully get the benifits they deserve. There are no guarenteers but if we can document a large number of cases to show congress it is not just a few men not happy. Please describe your issues and what the VA has done for you. Have you witnessed the spraying of any toxic material or used it yourself that would be important information. If you know of any issues that should be brought forward, now is the time to help our cases. Let us all stand together and help each other. We fought together so it is time to stand together.

Comments: Was feeling nostalgic about my time in Korea (11/66 to 10/67) and I found this web site. Havent found any of my buddies but it has been fun reading some of the comments. I was in Camp Casey, Company C, 1st Bn, 31 St Inf, 7Th Div. Served with some great guys (McCormick, Huddleston, McKenzie, Perry, Dixon, Deleston, Garner, Andrews-sorry guys cant remember you all) and only have wonderful memories. It may have been to cold or to hot and we may have humped to many of those hills but all and all I wouldn't change a thing. Well, maybe one. In hindsight, I wish that I had realized how wonderful it was being 21 and enjoyed the experience a bit more. We worked hard (at times) but when we went into Tongduchon we sure knew how to have a great time. Would be nice to reminisce with old buddies from Charlie company.

After we all crossed the DMZ to the furthest Nothern point and successfully received the entire crew, we returned to the 2d Inf. Camp for debriefing.
Once we all ate and debriefed, I was informed by same Lt. Col and advised he would be staying and I was to take the News Correspondent back to the MP Station @ Seoul where someone else would return him to Kimpo AB for his return flight to the States with his story.
Shortly after our loading my jeep w/ his equip. we set out for the return trip to Seoul. Our trip began chaotic and probably 10 or 15 Kilometers from 2d Inf a group of Koreans came jumping out of the brush on a mountain side where I was "clipping right along" in a very hurried fashion and my drivers side mirror struck the back of the head of one of the kids with matter splattering on the canvas /plastic door with the kid going down & under my left rear wheel. For what ever my reasons at the time I decided not to stop and did NOT. Upon arriving at the MP Station the News Correspondent began ranting and raging about my runnig over and killing this kid. Neither of us had any way of knowing. The MP's on duty called a superiior officer and the Korean Police to report me with the incident. Full Reports by ALL were made before I was allowed to leave. Threatened by US Military Courtsmartial as well as Korean Imprisonment I completed a telephone call to my Father (retired AF Officer) in States and was finally released.

Comments: I was stationed in Korea in the fall of 1968. My compound was called Guje Budae which translates to scroungy compound. It was right next to ASCOM Deopt compound in Bupyeong. The 121st Med Evac Hospital that was mentioned so many times on the TV show M*A*S*H was on the ASCOM Depot compound. I was a 63H20 and I spent most of my time there working in a junk yard that was on the SP50 compound. This compound also housed a signal company and an MP company. We were right across the street from a heli-port and AV unit that flew CH-21's. During my time there we transferred over 300 M-211's to the ROK Army. It would be interesting to hear from anyone who might have some 40 year old memories to share.

Also I was in Ft. Carson Co. in 1967 5th Infantry supply and the person that ran the armory was gone and they had me issue everyone their rifle to be cleaned, I new nothing about cleaning fluid that I gave out , but the next day all rifles were white in color, I had given out DDT to clean rifles , had to do it all over again after the person that was in charge of this got back. i was only 17 I new nothing at the time about chemicals.

Comments: While there we laid the first mine fields just south of the DMZ. We also re-enforced the 9th Cav & patrolled the DMZ, pulled op duty. I remember hearing & feeling the ground being tunneled underneath us. When we reported it, the reply was you are imagining things. The main reason we were sent to re-enforce was the North Koreans had snatched one of the 9th Cav man while he was driving, by himself, in a jeep to relieve a man on op duty. They didn't have enough people & had to do one man on duty at the op's.

Comments: I was was transfered ti the the infantry & DMZ during the Late Summer. I remember that James Brown came over after the 4th of July in a USO Show. Right after retraining at Camp Casey; I was sent home on Emergency leave because they thought my father was dying. This was abount the time of the Chicago Deocratic Convention. The US was in turmoil about the Viet Nam War and the streets were filled with Hippies. I tried to get a compasionate re assignment, but was ent back to serve on the DMZ; came back to Fort Monmouth to finish out my 3 years active Duty.
Keywords: E.J. Wrigley III and Joe Brown were friends in Photo lab at Fort Monmouth NJ. We all went to the 55th Aviation co together. Willis Bridges is the only name That I can remember. I was a UP ( Gate guard at Camp Matta & the DMZ for about 5 Months.

Comments: Been searching for Bill Riggs for years! He served with my husband at Camp Page, Korea in 1968-1969. They did volunteer work at an orphanage and were good friends. He was a Korean interpretor and went to the Monterrey Language school in California. He drove a Bentley prior to military service. I don't know much about him except he lived in the San Francisco area. After returning to the United States, he wrote to my husband but never had a return address. That was about 40 years ago.

The family has asked about film clips which appeared on the news Stateside. If you know where some of these film might be found, or you have any photos or other information about this attack, please e-mail me direct pesteward@hotmail.com

TAPS FOR ANOTHER GOOD MAN |

Phil Steward wrote on 2009-01-10 15:49:20.0
Comments: I just learned yesterday that we have lost another Vet who was helping in the fight to change the Agent Orange Law for all Korea Vets.
Sp.4 Dennis A. Grahn who served in C Company, 2nd Engineer Bn, 2d Infantry Division suffered a fatal heart attack while traveling from his home in Fairfield, California to Oregon for Thanksgiving Dinner.
Dennis was very helpful in our effort by sending photos, statements and a copy of his Hostile Fire Pay Orders listing numerous other men. In Korea he worked on the massive job of installing the new chain link barrier fence, cleared old minfields and daily swept entry points and DP's for Infantry Patrols entering theZone. Dennis leaves his wife, Linda and one daughter that I know of.
Although he will be missed by friends and family, we know he is now in a better place and no longer suffering the effect of Agent Orange Poisoning.

Planned to marry a Korean woman (my grandmother), but he died just before they could. Their child was ~7 months old. They first met at the U.S. Army Services Club (Camp Red Cloud), where she worked.
Also, if you haven ANY info on the U.S. Army Services Club, please reply.

If anybody remembers the tune and can tell me the title and/or artist I may be able to locate it on the web.

Comments: For Anna Vail,
My deepest sympathy with the loss of your brother Bob. I found your post on the Korean War Project page requesting information about your brother. I was a band member with the Victims of Success in Korea from 1968 to 1969. Bob was the lead guitarist /vocalist with the group and he was essentially the show. Not only was Bob a great musician, he was an outstanding entertainer. When we would perform for hundreds of servicemen, they saw a show from Bob, a phenomenal guitarist. Over the years I expected to see Bob on stage with a famous band, thats how good a musician he was. For 40 years I wondered what happened to Bob and was saddened to see your post about his untimely passing. The world did lose an outstanding musician and person. I would like to give you some pictures I have of Bob and the group. I was proud to play with Bob and will never forget him. He gave many of us memories we will cherish the rest of our lives.
Regards,

Was just 17 when I got there. Was a field commo wireman until I got in an argument with my commo chief, then became a #6 gun crewman driving a duece an ahalf pulling a 105. The entire gun crew was madeup of Katusas except me and the gun crew leader an E5 who's name I can't recall in fact I can picture alot of faces , just can't put names to them (fading memories). We switched over to Self Propelled units with twin caddie engines ad full track, fun to drive with them twin sticks for steering especially going downhill. I do remember Larry Lee, he was the co's jeep driver, he was from LA, California and I remember another guy we used to hang out together with, his last is Vukan don't recall first name, I think he was from Arizona, a big russian looking guy.
They where kinda fun times when you weren't freezing your butt off, $1 for a carton of smokes, sold them to mama san for $10, bak yang and ob beer, anyway if anyone remembers me I would be happy to hear from you or if you just want to BS about the "Good ol Days"

His name is James Ullman and I beleive he held the rank of buck sgt, and drove a duece and a half ammo supply vehicle.. I know in one of his pictures he is wearing a SP helmet by a guard post with the caption reading "Salmon and Ullman" If anyone has any info please get back to me as I'm sure he would be happy to hear from some old buddies.

Comments: Now that I've read some of these posts I kinda feel vindicated for my senior moments (haha).I shipped to korea from fort ord,ca after AIT as a field commo crewman end of June 1960, I don't really remember the unit I was assigned to. After a couple of months I got in a fight with my commo chief (he was a jerk)and they reassigned me to the artillery unit (we had 105's & 155's)I drove a deuce and ahalf pulling a 105, I was the #6 gun crew which was made up all ROKS except me and the gun chief, he was a E-6 and I was a Spec4 not to long later our towed 105's & 155's were traded for Sp's with twin caddie engines and twin stick steering, not sure of the nomenclachure.
The only names I can remember are Larry Lee he was from LA, CA, he was the driver for the Co. LT Commander ( a cool dude) and Vukan (don't remember first name) I think he was from Arizona (big russian looking guy) kinda guy your happy to have as your friend especially in a fight. I used to buy the cig coupons from those that did'nt smoke for a buck or two apiece. I still can see mamasan shouting tone pakun da (change money)as she's throwing it over the fence when it came time to change the mpc.
Good times/fading memory's, love to hear from anyone who wants to share their fading memory's.

Planned to marry a Korean woman (my grandmother), but he died just before they could. Their child was ~7 months old. They first met at the U.S. Army Services Club (Camp Red Cloud), where she worked.

Would also like to hear from vets that have their caims witrh the VA for AO exposure. I have a C&P on the 28th of this month for my claim. I served on the DMZ in 68 but don't remember the dates. Kind of disappointing that so many years have passed away before we were notified. I just became aware in March of this year when my brother told me to check it out. Finally an answer to my DM11 and all that goes along with it. No family history and no risks for it. Understand that David Benbow is working hard for Vets who served on the DMZ in the units recognized and also the units not recognized. Phil Stewart is also giving it his all in this fight. Comments: I loved the stakeouts, walking the safety lanes and roving patrols. The humping of 5 gal cans of diesel up Texas was hell on an icy day, but worth the effort when you got there. The little spring that ran cold water on the way up Texas was a refreshing rest stop, then up you went to the O.P.. There were O.P.s 201- 211-209-219-222-223, Froze on them, cant remember the rest, freedom vilage and the mayors daughter, I think we all tried to get a peek at her. memories are dimm now but I remember the buddies that I went on patrol with.--Best of the best!!! At 19 I became a man in Korea. Came home and got married, 48 years now, started a family, and have 4 children and 4 grand children. I hope to be a great grand father soon. Hay: Ogle, I remember the name but the face is long gone from my memory. You may remember me, I ran the movie projector.
