LOOKING FOR ALTO SHERMAN 66-67

GILBERT TOVAR wrote on November 15, 2011

City and State: SAN ANTONIO TX

Unit: COMPANY C, 13TH SUPPORT AND SERVICE BATTALION (SP-

Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN

Comments: Looking for Alto Sherman or anyone that served in Korea
during 66-67. He broke his right arm, was injured same
time as me. Trying to find out the medical unit we were
treated at. I am being denied VA benefits because they
do not have a log of my injury. I have the paperwork
from my injury, but the stamp on the record has the
numbers chopped off: looks like it could be 125th or
135th Med, DET, APO 358. If anyone could please help me
locate that Medical Group, whether you were there also,
or worked there, any help you could lend is greatly
appreciated.

KEN HUNT wrote on October 21, 2011

City and State: WA

Unit: SUWON 1ST MOB, KANGNUNG TACAN

Service or Relationship: AIR FORCE VETERAN

Comments: In 1959-60 I was in the 1st Mob stationed at Johnson
A/B. I went TDY to Yokota(twice), Sagamihara Army
post, and Ashiya A/B (for 100 days) all in Japan. I
was sent TDY twice to Suwon Korea in support of
operation Bone Deep and the 51st fighter group which
flew up from Okinawa. Just prior to the Mob being
sent to Clark A/B PI I was sent PCS to Korea because
of my prior experience in Korea.
After arriving in Korea I was sent TDY from Osan to
Kangnung and was in charge of the TACAN site and the
3 supporting Air Police. All of us in the Tacan team
were attached to the AC and W team that was already
there. There were a total of 14 officers and men
stationed in the entire USAF Kangnung detachment.

During my time at Kangnung there was an incursion
from which I came away with a Checkoslovakian copy of
a Russian 7.63 Tokarev. Prior to the incursion every
morning a driver would go to town to pickup the day
labor people and the guys that had stayed in town
overnight. After the incursion we added a "Shotgun
rider" to the crew that went to town every morning.

Every building in our area was a quonset hut. The
ops building had a sign out fropnt that said "If you
take off towards the ocean turn right, if you take
off toward the mountains turn left. If you go the
other way you will fly over North Korea and they will
shoot you down."
We had a 4000 x 200 ft PSP runway. They flew
pay mail, and food into us once a month via C46 or
C47. If they came at night we outlined the runway
with butt cans filled with sand and kerosene. We
then lit them on fire so the pilots could see the
runway.

Nowadays from the satellite pictures Kangnung looks
like a seashore fancy resort with a 4-6 lane highway
going North to the border/DMZ. The runway while much
larger than our little PSP runway still is oriented
at a 90 degrtee angle to the ocean.
If anybody was
there at the same time please respond to my email.

MARIO PACELLA SR. wrote on October 12, 2011

City and State: BLASDELL NY

Unit: CO. A 2/23RD INFANTRY 2ND DIVISION

Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN

Comments: It was 31 July 1968 during our souther rotation when
the 1st platoon of Company A 2/23rd Infantry was
assigned to man the positions along the southern
banks of the Imjin River west of Freedom bridge. On
that particular night I and another soldier were
manning position #1 located on the slope of a hill
over looking the Imjin River to our direct front. To
our right front was a stretch of lowlands with very
high grass, some as high as 6 feet.

Around 2100 hours as it was getting dark a four man
patrol from the 3rd platoon with Cpl. Jong a Katusa
at point comes by my position and they stop. The
patrol leader tells me that they will be operating in
the high grass land throughout the night and for us
not to fire into the area. I said alright but since I
knew the patrol leader I felt at liberty to express
my concerns. I asked him how are you going to see
anything in there with the grass so high. It just did
not seem right to me so I pointed out to a small rise
50 meters outside the grass land and suggested they
set their position there. That way I said they would
be able to see anyone coming out of the high grass
from the front and from my position we could cover
the left side of the grass land.

At that point the newest member of the patrol, a
private interjected and took off his helmet and
showed me the little illumination sticker on the back
of his helmet and tells me that they will be able to
see by just following the illumination sticker on the
helmet of the man in front of him. With that said the
patrol leader told me that he did not have the
discretion to set up outside the grassland since it
was a roaming patrol. I said Ok and stood there
watching them as they proceeded forward down the path
towards the grassland.

Two hours later I heard shots fired in the grassland
and this is what happened. The new man who showed me
the illumination sticker was walking rear guard and
lost sight of the man in front of him and somehow
ended up parallel with the point man without knowning
it. He heard movement to his left and opened fire and
one of the rounds hit Cpl. Jong in the chest causing
his death. Shortly after the shots were fired I heard
a radio request for medical assistance. When the
medical track arrived, from my position I saw members
of the patrol carrying Cpl. Jong out on a poncho into
the APC but it was too late.

Cpl.Hwang, Jong Kaek paid the ultimate sacrifice just
like many of our brothers in arms did during the DMZ
War. So when we look back to the memories of our
youth, let us not forget the friendships we developed
with those Katusas attached to our units who endured
the same hardship by our side. Comments welcomed,
Sgt. Mario Pacella 2/23rd Infantry

May 20, 2011 " TERRY HOWELL

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the
national inflation rate is still trending upward. Of
course anyone who has been grocery shopping lately
could tell you that, but, the BLS reports that the Con
sumer Price Index for April is up 0.8 percent over the
March CPI, which bodes well for COLA in 2012.

This is important for military retirees, and those
drawing VA benefits, because the CPI is the indicator
used to determine the annual cost-of-living-adjustment
(COLA) and adjustments to VA Disability and Compensa
tion,Vets Pension, and other VA rates for the following
year.

According to the Military Officers Association of Amer
ica (MOAA) the April 2011 CPI is up 2.9% from the 2008
CPI. The 2008 CPI will be used to calculate the 2012
COLA since there has been no COLA since 2009. This
means that if the trend continues the COLA for 2012
could be quite substantial. This will also mean an
increase in VA Compensation and Pension programs as
well as social security rates.

VA disability over the time line that it was sprayed.

I have buddy letters drom others who served at same
time and also have some Black and white pictures of

which VA has rejected because they are not color pics
and cant read the banding on batrrels, also I found a
section in title 38 (Title 38 Part II Subchapter III)
which talks about Veterans who had children born with
Spina Bifida Benefits approved, which clearly states
in September of 1967 ending in Aug 31, 1971 not the

Comments: I served my last 3 mos in Army with QRF Recon 1/9 Inf, on and in the DMZ, June 68-Sept68. Lt Kunst was plt leader. I remember Sgt McCollough, Sgt McGuire, Sgt Kim, and Maj McChord. I also remember a booby trap acid grenade that one guy got badly burnt. I remember well the "mad minute". I also remember going to retrieve weapons from a vehicle that hit a mine and 2 KIA.

Comments: Bob Kennedy is suffering from a brain tumor. He lives in Conway and served in Korea 68-69 with the 60th Trans Co.

His memory is affected by his brain tumor and he has limited capability to do research.

I need to get commo from anywone who can assist in pinning down his unit home base and anything of value to assist in his hearing which is coming up.

Not much to go on.

Ted
