Comments: Man Who Could See While He Slept

Here is little light hearted moment during the summer
of 1968 that is very memorable. One day it was really
hot and I walked into our hooch and when I got to the
sixth bunk I looked and had to take another look and
I could not believe what I saw. On the upper bunk was
a soldier named SP4 North and he was sound asleep
with a sheet covering his body but his feet were
exposed and on the bottom of each foot he had an
opened eye tattooed on each foot.

Immediately, I rounded up everyone who was in the
hooch at the time and led them to Norths bunk to
take a look. Boy, did everyone get a kick out of
that. Some of the men had to put their hands to their
faces to hold back their laughter . When North woke
up, I could not resist and I asked him why he had two
tattoos of opened eyes on the bottom of his feet.
With a straight face he simpley said he had those
tattoos on the bottom of his feet so he could see
while he slept. I should of known his answer without
even asking.

I guess it is those moments of levity and the
diversity within our ranks that enabled us to endure
those long nights on the DMZ. As you know, there are
all kinds of people in the army, but you could always
depend on SP4 North in the field. He was a good
soldier and if my life were in danger I knew I could
depend on him and every member in our platoon to come
and assist me.

Comments: How Will VA Handle New Agent Orange Presumptions?

Many claims for service connection based on the three
new illnesses were put on hold by the VA until the new
regulations were released. Unfortunately, I anticipate
there may be a slowdown in all VA compensation cases
being decided because the Department of Veterans
Affairs will have to adjudicate all the claims that
were put on hold and still adjudicate other VA
compensation claims causing at least some backlog. I
also anticipate many new claims being filed by veterans
who have these three new presumptive conditions who
previously may not have applied or they had been denied
in the past because these conditions were not on the
presumptive list for Agent Orange. Overall, this is
good news for the veterans who suffer from these
conditions as they can now get the VA compensation they
deserve. If you want to find out more about Agent
Orange and VA benefits you can visit the Veterans
Administration website.

Comments: I arrived in Korea in June 63 after a 18 day cruize
aboard the Hugh J Gaffey transport ship. I was
assinged to the then 2d Battle Group, 5th Cav. which
was reorganized to the 2 Bn. 5th Cav...While we were
in the middle of the reorgnization a small patrol of
North Koreans ( about 14 as I remember) came across
the DMZ and shot up a village killing a south Korean
policeman. A patrol was sent out and a machine
gunner killed most of the NK's with his M60 MG, the
other NK's committed sucide by holding hand grenades
to their bodies. I also remember being in the field
on alert for Christmas when one of the detonnators
exploded on Freedom Bridge. We also spent a week or
more on ALERT in the field when JFK was assinated. I
remember the weather as being the extreme for all of
the seasons Spring== Mud and Monsoons, summer== Hot
as hell and humid, fall==Cold and Wet, Winter==cold,
snow and miserable. Would like to hear from anyone
who served there and share some experiences because
despite the danger, weather etc. I made some good
friends and would like to hear from them

Comments: In 1959-60 I was in the 1st Mob stationed at Johnson
A/B. I went TDY to Yokota(twice), Sagamihara Army
post, and Ashiya A/B (for 100 days) all in Japan. I
was sent TDY twice to Suwon Korea in support of
operation Bone Deep and the 51st fighter group which
flew up from Okinawa. Just prior to the Mob being
sent to Clark A/B PI I was sent PCS to Korea because
of my prior experience in Korea.
After arriving in Korea I was sent TDY from Osan to
Kangnung and was in charge of the TACAN site and the
3 supporting Air Police. All of us in the Tacan team
were attached to the AC and W team that was already
there. There were a total of 14 officers and men
stationed in the entire USAF Kangnung detachment.

During my time at Kangnung there was an incursion
from which I came away with a Checkoslovakian copy of
a Russian 7.63 Tokarev. Prior to the incursion every
morning a driver would go to town to pickup the day
labor people and the guys that had stayed in town
overnight. After the incursion we added a "Shotgun
rider" to the crew that went to town every morning.

Every building in our area was a quonset hut. The
ops building had a sign out fropnt that said "If you
take off towards the ocean turn right, if you take
off toward the mountains turn left. If you go the
other way you will fly over North Korea and they will
shoot you down."
We had a 4000 x 200 ft PSP runway. They flew
pay mail, and food into us once a month via C46 or
C47. If they came at night we outlined the runway
with butt cans filled with sand and kerosene. We
then lit them on fire so the pilots could see the
runway.

Nowadays from the satellite pictures Kangnung looks
like a seashore fancy resort with a 4-6 lane highway
going North to the border/DMZ. The runway while much
larger than our little PSP runway still is oriented
at a 90 degrtee angle to the ocean.
If anybody was
there at the same time please respond to my email.

Comments: It was 31 July 1968 during our souther rotation when
the 1st platoon of Company A 2/23rd Infantry was
assigned to man the positions along the southern
banks of the Imjin River west of Freedom bridge. On
that particular night I and another soldier were
manning position #1 located on the slope of a hill
over looking the Imjin River to our direct front. To
our right front was a stretch of lowlands with very
high grass, some as high as 6 feet.

Around 2100 hours as it was getting dark a four man
patrol from the 3rd platoon with Cpl. Jong a Katusa
at point comes by my position and they stop. The
patrol leader tells me that they will be operating in
the high grass land throughout the night and for us
not to fire into the area. I said alright but since I
knew the patrol leader I felt at liberty to express
my concerns. I asked him how are you going to see
anything in there with the grass so high. It just did
not seem right to me so I pointed out to a small rise
50 meters outside the grass land and suggested they
set their position there. That way I said they would
be able to see anyone coming out of the high grass
from the front and from my position we could cover
the left side of the grass land.

At that point the newest member of the patrol, a
private interjected and took off his helmet and
showed me the little illumination sticker on the back
of his helmet and tells me that they will be able to
see by just following the illumination sticker on the
helmet of the man in front of him. With that said the
patrol leader told me that he did not have the
discretion to set up outside the grassland since it
was a roaming patrol. I said Ok and stood there
watching them as they proceeded forward down the path
towards the grassland.

Two hours later I heard shots fired in the grassland
and this is what happened. The new man who showed me
the illumination sticker was walking rear guard and
lost sight of the man in front of him and somehow
ended up parallel with the point man without knowning
it. He heard movement to his left and opened fire and
one of the rounds hit Cpl. Jong in the chest causing
his death. Shortly after the shots were fired I heard
a radio request for medical assistance. When the
medical track arrived, from my position I saw members
of the patrol carrying Cpl. Jong out on a poncho into
the APC but it was too late.

Cpl.Hwang, Jong Kaek paid the ultimate sacrifice just
like many of our brothers in arms did during the DMZ
War. So when we look back to the memories of our
youth, let us not forget the friendships we developed
with those Katusas attached to our units who endured
the same hardship by our side. Comments welcomed,
Sgt. Mario Pacella 2/23rd Infantry
