SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: ARMY VETERAN Comments: Looking for anyone that remembers getting ambushed while we were trying to relieve the squad at o.p.?? in summer of 67.I'm just not able to remember who was there.I do remember being scared. We were in a 3/4 ton and approching the guard post when we got hit.I think ssg Johnson was our squad leader that day.We didn't relieve those guys that day.I remember that I was riding in the truck with rest of our squad with my rifle over the top the truck cab.I felt what I will call paint chips hitting my face and then hearing the automatic fire from the north koreans. We all jumped out of the truck and took cover. The truck driver got the 3/4 ton out by driving with his hands verses his feet while under fire.I also believe that pfc Schnadt was helping or actually driving the 3/4ton. How did they clear the land to build that fence and install personal mines on the north side of the fence in no time flat? Do you think they used a.g.Orange? I also have degeneretive disks and a new heart valve. Keywords: ambushed while attempting to relieve o.p.??? 67-68 |

A 2/23RD INFANTRY 2ND DIVISION SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: ARMY VETERAN Comments: Man Who Could See While He Slept Here is little light hearted moment during the summer of 1968 that is very memorable. One day it was really hot and I walked into our hooch and when I got to the sixth bunk I looked and had to take another look and I could not believe what I saw. On the upper bunk was a soldier named SP4 North and he was sound asleep with a sheet covering his body but his feet were exposed and on the bottom of each foot he had an opened eye tattooed on each foot. Immediately, I rounded up everyone who was in the hooch at the time and led them to Norths bunk to take a look. Boy, did everyone get a kick out of that. Some of the men had to put their hands to their faces to hold back their laughter . When North woke up, I could not resist and I asked him why he had two tattoos of opened eyes on the bottom of his feet. With a straight face he simpley said he had those tattoos on the bottom of his feet so he could see while he slept. I should of known his answer without even asking. I guess it is those moments of levity and the diversity within our ranks that enabled us to endure those long nights on the DMZ. As you know, there are all kinds of people in the army, but you could always depend on SP4 North in the field. He was a good soldier and if my life were in danger I knew I could depend on him and every member in our platoon to come and assist me. Sgt. AGENT ORANGE |
| LARRY ANDERSON wrote on December 6, 2011 CITY AND STATE: SUN CITY AR UNIT: UNCSB-JSA '68-'69 SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: ARMY VETERAN Comments: How Will VA Handle New Agent Orange Presumptions? Many claims for service connection based on the three new illnesses were put on hold by the VA until the new regulations were released. Unfortunately, I anticipate there may be a slowdown in all VA compensation cases being decided because the Department of Veterans Affairs will have to adjudicate all the claims that were put on hold and still adjudicate other VA compensation claims causing at least some backlog. I also anticipate many new claims being filed by veterans who have these three new presumptive conditions who previously may not have applied or they had been denied in the past because these conditions were not on the presumptive list for Agent Orange. Overall, this is good news for the veterans who suffer from these conditions as they can now get the VA compensation they deserve. LOOKING FOR ALTO SHERMAN 66-67 |
| GILBERT TOVAR wrote on November 15, 2011 CITY AND STATE: SAN ANTONIO TX UNIT: COMPANY C, 13TH SUPPORT AND SERVICE BATTALION (SP- SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: ARMY VETERAN Comments: Looking for Alto Sherman or anyone that served in Korea during 66-67. He broke his right arm, was injured same time as me. Trying to find out the medical unit we were treated at. I am being denied VA benefits because they do not have a log of my injury. I have the paperwork from my injury, but the stamp on the record has the numbers chopped off: looks like it could be 125th or 135th Med, DET, APO 358. If anyone could please help me locate that Medical Group, whether you were there also, or worked there, any help you could lend is greatly appreciated. SUWON OR KANGNUNG AUG 60 THRU JAN61 |
| KEN HUNT wrote on October 21, 2011 CITY AND STATE: WA UNIT: SUWON 1ST MOB, KANGNUNG TACAN SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: AIR FORCE VETERAN Comments: In 1959-60 I was in the 1st Mob stationed at Johnson A/B. I went TDY to Yokota(twice), Sagamihara Army post, and Ashiya A/B (for 100 days) all in Japan. I was sent TDY twice to Suwon Korea in support of operation Bone Deep and the 51st fighter group which flew up from Okinawa. Just prior to the Mob being sent to Clark A/B PI I was sent PCS to Korea because of my prior experience in Korea. After arriving in Korea I was sent TDY from Osan to Kangnung and was in charge of the TACAN site and the 3 supporting Air Police. All of us in the Tacan team were attached to the AC&W team that was already there. There were a total of 14 officers and men stationed in the entire USAF Kangnung detachment. During my time at Kangnung there was an incursion from which I came away with a Checkoslovakian copy of a Russian 7.63 Tokarev. Prior to the incursion every morning a driver would go to town to pickup the day labor people and the guys that had stayed in town overnight. After the incursion we added a "Shotgun rider" to the crew that went to town every morning. Every building in our area was a quonset hut. The ops building had a sign out fropnt that said "If you take off towards the ocean turn right, if you take off toward the mountains turn left. If you go the other way you will fly over North Korea and they will shoot you down." We had a 4000 x 200 ft PSP runway. They flew pay mail, and food into us once a month via C46 or C47. If they came at night we outlined the runway with butt cans filled with sand and kerosene. We then lit them on fire so the pilots could see the runway. Nowadays from the satellite pictures Kangnung looks like a seashore fancy resort with a 4-6 lane highway going North to the border/DMZ. The runway while much larger than our little PSP runway still is oriented at a 90 degrtee angle to the ocean. If anybody was there at the same time please respond to my email.
