Seeking info from RD 8057th AU APO 971 Basketball, baseball and football league players |

Michale Edwards wrote on 2010-04-03 13:28:07.0
Comments: My father Corporal Willie Edwards was transferred from the HQ 1st FA BN (Osbn) APO 358 to Inchon RD 8057th AU APO 971 in May 1955. He was responsible for sending out the monthly newsletter for the 936th Field Arterillary Battalion (combat assignment)during active combat in Korea.
Corp. Edwards also served under Brigadier General Mason Lucas, a graduate of West Point. He served for the Special Services I Corp in Korea 1955. My father relates that Brig. General Lucas asked him to set up an athletic program because of his degree in education and coaching experience.
Corp. Edwards said he obtained two metal buildings and made a gym for the teams. He organized an inside tennis court for Brig.General Lucas. Corp Edwards said he traded C ration coffee to the Koreans for labor to install a hardwood floor in the gym for the basketball league. He then looked over files to TDY soldiers into the Special Services I Corp. athletic program. Corp. Edwards then went to Japan and bought athletic equipment and proceeded to organize basketball, football, and baseball programs for the Special Services units in Korea.
These teams were called the Special Services I Corp Cannoneers. Corp. Edwards organized a tour of Japan during the Korean war after the armistice was signed. The I Corp Cannoneers played the Navy, Marines, and Air Force teams respectively.
In 1955 my father was rotated home. He received a letter of Appreciation from Brig. General Lucas for organizing their athletic program and my father coached and won the I Corp Basketball championship. He was then selected to coach the I Corp All Star Basketball team.
My father speaks of nothing more fondly than this remembrance of his role in the first Korean War after the armistice was signed. My father had the privilege of carrying his passion of teaching and coaching to the far East and serving his country doing what he loves best , coaching basketball and football.
I am seeking any service men who participated in these leagues or any service men who attended the games of these leagues in the first Korean War. I had no idea such a thing existed in the war once the armistice was signed.
I would love to be able to communicate any remembrances or events or special messages for the Special Services I Corp Cannoneers.
My father is ill, he is going blind, and well, he is 80 years old so every day with him is a blessing.
Please email or respond if you have any comments or questions.
It would so brighten his day to hear of these special memories. His heart is all American true blue apple pie and I am so proud to be the daughter of a man who served his country and took care of his family in every way as passionately he served in the first Korean War.
I would also like to hear from family members of deceased soldiers who may have served or remembers these Special Services.
Thank You.
Sincerely,
Michale Edwards

He told me the night before he passed away, when asked, that he built bridges during the War. I was 33 years old at the time! That's what he always said. Since my brother Tom, went to Veterean's Affairs, for my Mom who had a problem with her veteran's check, they made a big deal when asked for my father's ID number! He was 1 of maybe a dozen or so I forget, who were top secret, during Korean War! They made a big deal out of this. I'm expecting a big thing some day! Because he was VERY closed mouth. Have you any info, on my Dad?

Comments: I feel very sorry for the troops in Iraq if their treated like the Vets from Korea. I did dem. work with C3, Nitrostarch, primer cord with no hearing protection. Went to get hearing aid and was told that the VA had stopped giving glasses and hearing aids cause it was costing the Gov. to much money............WOW WHEN WE'RE ALL GONE THEY WILL DO LIKE THEY DID FOR WW 2 VETS. To little to late.. Keep the faith.

LOOKING FOR MY GRANDFATHER |
 |
 |
SHANDA DICKSON wrote on 2004-11-23 12:21:43.0
Comments: I am researching Army photos from 1959 in Seoul Korea in a search to find my grandfather. My grandmother was a native of Korea in 1958-59 when she met a young Italian/Greek Army soldier and George from New Jersey/New York that she fell in love with and not long after that she was pregnant with my mother. When the young solider went back to the U.S., he wrote my grandmother and sent money for my mother. My grandmothers stepfather did not approve of the situation so he wrote my grandfather back and told him that my grandmother and my mother had died. So, my grandfather has no idea that his daughter is alive and living in Atlanta, Georgia.
We are not sure of his last name due to the language difference between the two, but we have a picture of him and know his first name was George from New Jersey/New York, Italian or Greek and was stationed in Seoul, Korea in 1958/59. Since you had photos from and around this time, I was wondering if you were able to give my any helpful information that would help me find my grandfather. I do know he was around 60-62, dark hair and we also know he maybe had an usually last name, maybe Italian. Thank you so much for your time!

Comments: I am looking for anyone who might have known or served with my brother Boyd E. Tucker. He was at Fort Riley, Kansas in Feb. of 1950, then on to Camp Stoneman, California in May, 1950 and from there he was shipped to Japan for Occupation Duty. I don't know where he was stationed in Japan when the Korean War started. His 24th Infantry Division was one of the first ground troops to be deployed to Korea. He was KIA at the Battle of Kum River on 7/14/50. I am just now getting the information about his death and how he died. I would like to hear from anyone who might have known him while he was at Fort Riley, Camp Stoneman, Japan and the early part of the Korean War before his death. Please email with any info, large or small. Thank you!

EARLY PANMUNJOM |

David E. (Dave) Miles wrote on 2004-09-17 21:26:42.0
Comments: I was at Panmunjom summer of 1952 and have many pics and a few stories. As it was rather primative when I was there the Engineers tried to "pretty up" the area around the meeting tents. Set up twin guard shacks for the MPs to stand in out of the weather during the meetings. Made a walkway with stones to the latrine out back and planted small bushes around to improve the UN area. When the chinese/NKs saw this they built guard shacks for their guards but made them about a foot taller than ours. And they brought in full grown trees to plant to outdo ours. They brought them in a truck. The day they finished planting these trees in the afternoon and the delegates had already gone back to Munsan for the night, we were out on the road by the bridge of no return playing catch. We looked up and here comes the chinese truck barreling down the road toward us and he crossed the bridge of no return and surrendered to the Marines down the road. Shortly after he went by, two jeeps of Chinese came tering down the road but stopped short of the Marines. At the next days meeting the Chinese accused us of kidnapping the driver and the truck. For days afterwards the Chinese guards would walk around in our area peeking in our tents for the "kidnapped" soldier.

Comments: Hi?
My name is D.I.Choi in Inje County -Local government Office. I am the one in charge of International cooperation. First of all , I personally thank your fighting for the freedom of Inje County, South Korea, My project is to find the soliders who are deeply related in LivingStone Bridge in Inje so I will let the people in Inje know the exact story about Livingstone Bridge. The story that i know goes as follow.
Livingstone Bridge- (The Livingstone bridge in Inje is located at 20 km to northwest from Hyon -ri. and 50 km to north from Tappung-ri)
Inje County, Gangwon Province, Republic of Korea is looking for Mr. Livingstone's family and his combat soldiers who fought for the freedom and died at an away from home. Inje County is planning to celebrate the 48 the anniversary of Livingstone and commemorate the heros in Korean War so that the monument will be erected and the people living here try to hand their name down to future generations.
It has been almost 48 years since the Bridge was constructed. This is the Bridge linking Deoksan-ri to Hapkang-ri in Inje County,Gangwon-Province, Republic of Korea.
In Korean War, 1951, during U.S-Korea joint military operation, A battalion commander, Livingstone(not known his full name) retreated strategically. But river's flood resulted from a sudden shower made it impossible to cross the river so that the artillery battalion had a lot of damages by falling into North Korean and chinese ambush. Many soldiers were died and a lot of military equipments and supplies were lost on May 22 -May 28, 1951. The Lieutenant Colonel, Livingstone(Not sure) was severely wounded.
Later He was died at a field hospital. Before he died he lamented bitterly " If there had been a Bridge, our forces not only would not have damaged but also could have winned that battle". He left the Will that was an earnest request saying "If I die , have my wife build a Bridge with private funds at Inje County, the battle field". --------------------------------------------
In order to find the forces that were related in Inje County during the Korean War, I have studed U.S army for a week. and I could find the 2 division which was the main force to secure Inje County from North Korea and red China. I could know many forces which belong to the 2 division such as the 23 rd infantry , 38th Fa,9 th infantry, 39th,the 187 RCT, 64th Tk Bn, 72d thbn 674 Fa Bn 127th Engineers.

Comments: When te truce was signed we were assigned to the 1st Provisional DMZ Poice Company. We patrolled the DMZ. We were the first to do this. Our camp (Camp Semper Fidelis) was located just north of the ImJin Gang between Libby & Freedom bridges. When the 1st Marine Division came home in 55 they were relieved by the 24th Infantry USA. A group of us want to re-visit Korea next year. A lot depends on us finding our old camp. Any help we can get in finding the grid co-ordinates of the camp will be greatly appreciated. Div.) from 1951-53. He served in the trenches at the 38th Parallel for a year 1952-1953. He has spoken of going out on patrols at night to find where the N. Korean/Chinese army was. He was hit my mortar shell shrapnel on 2/26/53. He was treated in a MASH unit and then sent to a Hospical in Japan (Far East Command). He was returned to duty at the front during the last 2-3 months prior to the 27July1953 treaty ending the war. He returned home shortly after the war "officially" ended. If you knew my father during his military service, I would very much appreciate hearing from you.

He was a first rate mechanic, I know this because I trained him! He also became a good buddy of mine. Still have 2 photos of you, Lee. 1 while wearing fatigues, and 1 in your new suit. If anyone knows the whereabouts of Lee Ul Sop, could you tell him that Sgt. Gene Glanz is trying to contact him? I would also appreciate contact from Veterans groups in KOREA today, who are willing to help me contact Lee. Thanks.

Comments: Hi,
I was in the 311th Fighter-Bomber Squadron from April 1956 to April 1957. I was in the Airborne Fire Control section.
We rotated to Tainan, Formosa, every four months for a two month TDY on the Chinese Air Base in Tainan.
I remember Mark (Lubbock,TX) who was a fantastic artist with just a pencil and paper -- and his buddy, Bob, who was from the Oklahoma oil fields.
I also had a good friend, Bob White, who was a fantastic guitar player. I later learned that he went on to play with the Funk Brothers of Mo Town; and died of cancer a few years back. That was a great loss to me because I had dreamed of getting together with him again. He taught me to appreciate jazz music.
Names I remember: Joe Valdez, Jim Davis, Francis (from Boston), Ken (lucky to have any stripes).
One incident I recall was a big fellow, can't recall his name, with wild hair that stood straight up. One night he was on OD duty at the squad room, got drunk, and ran around with his 45 pistol raising cain.
Another incident was Lt. Bob Ford, one of the best officers I had the pleasure to know, who was killed when his plane crashed.
I would love to hear from anyone who was there.
God bless, have a wonderful day,
Bill Gray Riverside, CA billdory@pacbell.net

Comments: Hello,
I am looking for anyone that served in "A" Troop, 1st RCN Squadron, 9th Cav. in 1958/59 and 1959/60.
While I was in the unit, we moved the compound (bag and baggage) from the area of Squadron HQ to North of Libby Bridge - some time after the move, the DMZ Police Co. was disbanded and we then took over duties inside the 'Z', we continued our duties south of the 'Z' as well.
Were you there? If so, please drop me a note!
I would like to invite all who view this to visit my "A" Troop web site and take a look around and see what duty in Korea was like back in 1959/60.
The web site is Cavalry Country; www.cavalrycountry.org
Everyone (vets, and non-vets alike), is always welcome at Cavalry Country!!
Stop on by, sign in and say 'Hello' Chuck Seabrook, where are you!?!?
Stay well my brothers!!!

Comments: DoD to recognize Korea vets with medal by Tesia Williams
WASHINGTON (Army News Service, Jan. 2, 2003) - A new defense medal will eventually be issued to military members who served in the Republic of Korea, or adjacent waters, after July 28, 1954.
The new Korea Defense Service Medal was authorized by the Fiscal Year 2003 Defense Authorization Act.
The U.S. Korea Defense Service Medal should not be confused with the foreign service Republic of Korea War Service Medal that was authorized for U.S. military personnel who served in Korea between June 25, 1950 and July 27, 1953, officials said.
The new medal will be for those who served in Korea after the war, up to an undetermined ending date, said officials from the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
Given the volume of anticipated recipients, officials said the time it will take to award the KDSM is difficult to estimate. They said it will take time to identify, notify and award the medal to eligible former service members.
Some of the actions that must be completed are: designing the medal, obtaining necessary funding, developing policy for issuance and wear and processing to include verification of service and then award of the medal.
The first three actions should be completed in approximately four to six months, officials said. However, based on previous experiences when creating service medals the entire process can take up to a year, officials added.

There was five others that got it in the back of a dump trk they were killed by a Grenade and thats all I know. IT had to have been in May or June of 1967. Comments: I have six children who would like to know about their grandfather (I am personally interested as I never met him). He died on December 5, 1974. He had just retired from the Army in San Antonio (Fort Sam Houston). He served in WWII and apparently entered Omaha Beach on June 7 (Day 2) and was hter for the liberation of Bergen Belsen. After WWII, he was drafted for the Korean war and served two tours(?)and left in 1954. I am not sure where he served the first/ second tours but know from a cassette tape in 1969 that when he left in 1954 he was stationed in Kunsan. He stayed in the service after Korea as he already had 10 or more years in the service. He last served in Korea circa 1969 at ASCOM City where he worked in the quartermaster corps. Anybody who knew him or has any information about him would you please contact us.
Keywords: Quartermaster Corps, Kunsan.

Comments: My father was in General MacArthur's Honor Guard. He also served in Vietnam as a desk Sgt.(?) He suffered a horrific trianing accident at Fort Bragg and it left him disabled enough not to go back to the field. However he remained in the Army until his retirement in the early 70's. I have been to one reunion with him for the Rakkasan's(?spelling) and I saw a side of him I had never seen before. He seemed to be in his element. I am seeking anyone that served with him. He is getting up in years and I am sure he would love to hear from any of his old buddies. P.S. I am the son of a veteran and am very proud to be an American. I am very thankful for my freedom and the opportunities that I have as an American. So, for myself and my family, I say thank you veterans and all who serve our great nation. God Bless you and keep you. Jay Conyers
