Seeking info from RD 8057th AU APO 971 Basketball, baseball and football league players |

Michale Edwards wrote on 2010-04-03 13:28:07.0
Comments: My father Corporal Willie Edwards was transferred from the HQ 1st FA BN (Osbn) APO 358 to Inchon RD 8057th AU APO 971 in May 1955. He was responsible for sending out the monthly newsletter for the 936th Field Arterillary Battalion (combat assignment)during active combat in Korea.
Corp. Edwards also served under Brigadier General Mason Lucas, a graduate of West Point. He served for the Special Services I Corp in Korea 1955. My father relates that Brig. General Lucas asked him to set up an athletic program because of his degree in education and coaching experience.
Corp. Edwards said he obtained two metal buildings and made a gym for the teams. He organized an inside tennis court for Brig.General Lucas. Corp Edwards said he traded C ration coffee to the Koreans for labor to install a hardwood floor in the gym for the basketball league. He then looked over files to TDY soldiers into the Special Services I Corp. athletic program. Corp. Edwards then went to Japan and bought athletic equipment and proceeded to organize basketball, football, and baseball programs for the Special Services units in Korea.
These teams were called the Special Services I Corp Cannoneers. Corp. Edwards organized a tour of Japan during the Korean war after the armistice was signed. The I Corp Cannoneers played the Navy, Marines, and Air Force teams respectively.
In 1955 my father was rotated home. He received a letter of Appreciation from Brig. General Lucas for organizing their athletic program and my father coached and won the I Corp Basketball championship. He was then selected to coach the I Corp All Star Basketball team.
My father speaks of nothing more fondly than this remembrance of his role in the first Korean War after the armistice was signed. My father had the privilege of carrying his passion of teaching and coaching to the far East and serving his country doing what he loves best , coaching basketball and football.
I am seeking any service men who participated in these leagues or any service men who attended the games of these leagues in the first Korean War. I had no idea such a thing existed in the war once the armistice was signed.
I would love to be able to communicate any remembrances or events or special messages for the Special Services I Corp Cannoneers.
My father is ill, he is going blind, and well, he is 80 years old so every day with him is a blessing.
Please email or respond if you have any comments or questions.
It would so brighten his day to hear of these special memories. His heart is all American true blue apple pie and I am so proud to be the daughter of a man who served his country and took care of his family in every way as passionately he served in the first Korean War.
I would also like to hear from family members of deceased soldiers who may have served or remembers these Special Services.
Thank You.
Sincerely,
Michale Edwards

Keywords: Dad, was known in Saint John, N.B., Canada, where he grew up as Louis, But during the WW2, and Korean War, probably known as Jack. He told me the night before he passed away, when asked, that he built bridges during the War. I was 33 years old at the time! That's what he always said. Since my brother Tom, went to Veterean's Affairs, for my Mom who had a problem with her veteran's check, they made a big deal when asked for my father's ID number! He was 1 of maybe a dozen or so I forget, who were top secret, during Korean War! They made a big deal out of this. I'm expecting a big thing some day! Because he was VERY closed mouth. Have you any info, on my Dad?
