Comments: I'm looking for a medic attached to the morter battery about 1 mile from Freedom Gate Bridge on the DMZ in 1957 or 58. He treated me for, what was thought to be a puncher in my lower abdomen, from a limb or something. It was discovered in the Dallas Veterans Hosp. That it was a bullet wound. Also, I'd like to hear from some of the guys that I was with back then.

K-13 was in Wonju and K-55 was located inside the air base in Osan. I would like to locate anyone that may have been there at the time that I was there, our CO at base camp was Capt. Jewett, we also had a 1st Lt. Johnston, the First Sgt. was Sgt McGraw. some of the buddies thatI remenber were: BRADLEY, Anderson, Edwards,Tripplet (from Lemont Furnace pa) Paul Iden,( from Aiken Ga)Pvt. Wilson, Masterson , Willie Newman,to name a few.
I left Korea on an emergency leave and never returned ,and never got to say good bye to all those guys.
I have heard from a couple of guys that were at Beason VHF and one that was at our base camp after I was there, but I would like to hear from anyone that was at these sites before or after I was there so we could chat about old times. we had a small VHF station at K-55 up on a hill looking down on the Base's mess hall that we enjoyed night and day. If there is anyone out there that was connected with company "D" long lines battalion please email me : AFDFYRBSTR@AOL.COM I would love to hear from you.

Comments: We arrived in Korea in April, 1954, and within 4 weeks were back at sea aboard the USS Bayfield for a Marlex Exercise. Embarking at Inchon, we proceed south in the Yellow Sea for several days, and then stopped and held. The rumor was that we were going to French Indo-China, where the siege of Dienbienphu was underway. However, we proceeded up the Sea of Japan and maded training landings on the beach at Koto-Ri near Yang Yang. Back in Korea, my section was usually attached to Item Company in the field. My Weapons Company Commander was Capt. Mays, who was also the Battalion Supporting Arms Controller. Item Company Commander was Capt. Parks. Our base camp was near the Imjin River near Libby Bridge. On July 27, 1954, the anniversary of the Truce, we were alerted to the possibility of a Chinese "jump off". Never happened. Oh and yes, the foe facing us across the DMZ were the Chinese, not the North Koreans. Finally a year later, in May, 1955, the entire 1st Mar Div deployed back to the States, to be stationed at Camp Pendleton, where I remained until returning to civilian life in September, 1956. My year in Korea was tense, and exciting. We saw no combat, but we were on the front line, in what was in those days, the most dangerous place in the world.
Keywords: I arrived in Korea with the 42nd Replacement Draft with Willie Bowling, (Willy One), Willie Daligon, (Willie Two), and Bob Beck, I was called "Manhattan". The four of us became ammo "humpers" in the 3rd Section, HMG. Sgt. Absdnider of Texas was Platoon Sgt. Other platoon members were, Curtis, Fontaine, "Doc" Cantrell, Foley, Firth. Later on came Gillespie and Gnapp and a new Platoon Sergeant Bearschwirld. First Seargeant was "Top", Tommy Thompson. Our section contained two squads organized around the .30 caliber M1917A1 Browning Heavy Machine Gun, (water cooled). Squad leaders and ammo "humpers" carried .30 cal. M-1 Rifles. Gunners and Asst Gunners carried .45 cal Colt automatic pistols. Other platoons in Weapons Company were armed with .81mm mortars, and 3.5 rocket launchers, and M-1 flamethrowers.

Lee Helle here, I have my 1965 Camp Beard year book and when the book was made the Bn Chaplains last name was White and his assistants name was SP4 Ratliff and yes your man is Ratliff. Looking at the picture I would guess he was 3-5 years younger than I was at the time which means he will be 60-66 years of age today. Somewhere buried in the army archives will be copies of morning reports which would at least have his full name. I recognized Ratliff in the picture not by name but by his ears.
