Donations needed for new Currahee KIA Memorial

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
Hoyt Bruce MOORE wrote on 2009-07-03 15:28:34.0

Comments: Over 1,400 Currahees have made the supreme sacrifice for our country. You may have known some of them. But what you may not know is that there is no single memorial to all the soldiers of our Regiment who have been killed in action. This situation is about to change. Work has already started on a memorial, but your help is needed. At present, there is a need to raise $38,000. This is the unfunded dollar amount required to complete this memorial. This tribute to our fallen is being paid for by people like you. The Army has provided the land; however, soldiers, and veterans, along with Currahee friends and family, will have to come together if we are to complete this project. Now is the time to step up and take action. Check out the 506th Association web page www.506infantry.org/projectstable.html to see what the memorial will look like and how you can make this dream a reality.

Comments: Get the latest information on Currahee Rendezvous 2009 on the 506th Association web page www.506infantry.org/projectstable.html . No this is not another reunion, nor is it just a gathering of veterans. This is something very special and will be remembered for its unique approach to the homecoming of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 506th Infantry Regiment. Our regiment is currently deployed to Afghanistan and COL Pete Johnson, Regimental Commander, has decided to have a three day celebration when the troops return to Fort Campbell. Plans are now being made and YOU are invited. That is correct, all 506th Veterans are invited to attend CURRAHEE RENDEZVOUS 2009. Although the Currahees will return to CONUS in late winter or early spring, in order to allow for block leave and event planning, the Rendezvous is scheduled for May 28- 30, 2009.

Document Title: Operational Report - Lessons Learned, Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, Korea "Experiences of Unit Engaged in Counterinsurgency Operations" (Adobe PDF format)

Area of Operations: Republic of Korea and the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) Source: USArmy CGSC Library, Ft Leavenworth, Kansas

Purpose of Distribution: To provide primary source documentation that may be cited in a historical context for research and archival purposes. Also, this document may prove useful to veterans, by the inclusion of units and operational attachments listed, offering proof of service in the Combat Zone north of the Imjin River. Many servicemen, like myself who served in the combat area of operations along the Demilitarized Zone during this time period, were exposed to Agent Orange and are suffering from illness related to their exposure, including the possible genetic affects that exposure to Agent Orange may have had on our children. For information please see: (http://www1.va.gov/Agentorange/page.cfm?pg=2) and also see (http://www.vba.va.gov/bln/21/benefits/herbicide/). Additionally, some DMZ Veterans require unit location documentation for PTSD - Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in order to apply for treatment and appropriate benefits as applicable. This information may also be useful to Surviving Spouses and/or Children, in the event the servicemember is deceased. - Major Vandon E. Jenerette (RA) - Lieutenant Katherine M. Jenerette (USAR)

I can find Camp Casey by using grid coordinates but none seem to exist for Camp Hovey. I served there as Company Clerk from October, 1966 until December 1968 (I extended my tour - twice). Got transferred down to Camp Howard after Pueblo incident. Just looking for good old pictures of Hovey and Toko-ri. I miss the old place.

CHRISTMAS POEM KOREA 1951

Charles Ivy wrote on 2006-12-27 20:17:17.0

Comments: Firefight on the Hill

This poem may be a whole lot late But I bet you Vets can still relate That long ago firefight on the hill The memory of which is very real

We were on that cold Korean hill Being there certainly wasnt a thrill The night was cold and dreary The wind blew, it was never weary

Suddenly you could hear bugles blow! We knew Chinese were about to show Call Division, get the some light! The lights came on, lit the hill so bright

The search lights cast an eerie glow You could see movement far below Quick, we need more lights to bear Heavy mortars lit the hill. with a flare

Just then up the hill the Chinese came We shouted, get ready, take good aim Our rifles cracked all around The mortar fired another round

The Chinese fired, and did their worst We met them with machine gun burst They had enough and sounded retreat What a relief, we had them beat

Then the bugles sounded as before They were going hit us with still more They swarmed the hill, our situation dire We met their charge with artillery fire

Our shells hit their ranks, with a blast Weve got them now, they cant last Run tumbling down the hill, they went We had beat them, our lines not bent

Now comes the task we dread Find the wounded and count the dead Give thanks to God now we Pray We have made it to another day

Comments: I am looking for some one that is in Korea now, that may get up to the Rodriquez Range area some, (MPRC north east of Casey). I was at Camp St. Barbara in 1970 when it was the home of I Corp Artillery. Camp St. Barbara was located just a couple of miles west of the Rodriquez, also on route 37. Camp St. Barbara was on route 37, at the bridge over the Hantan river. It was just north of the bridge on the old section of 37 that runs parallel to the new 4 lane highway.

Here is a sat view of the area, showing where Camp St. Barbara was located in relation to the range.

http://img173.imageshack.us/img173/4059/mprccpstbdf5.jpg

Copy and paste into the top box of your browser.

I have a web page about Camp St. Barbara, and would love to add a few pictures of what it looks like now. The area where Camp St. Barbara was located is in use now, and I would love to get a few pictures of the entrance area, showing any signs there, and a few pictures of the village on the other side of the bridge from the road.

Email me direct at wd4ngb@charter.net

Thanks, Bruce

Comments: I was stationed at Cp Casey in 1960-61 in the 17th Trans Bn, which was located in Happy Valley. Happy Valley is located near where the roads from gate 1 and gate 2 meet. There was a gas station there, and just behind it, on the other side of the little bridge was the entrance to Happy Valley. Pomeroy Pistol Range was also there.

I have a web page with all of my old assignments on it with pictures, and would love to know what unit is there now, and maybe get a few pictures of the entrance and some of the buildings there now. We had all quonset huts back then. I remember each squad tearing out the plywood floor in there hut, and mixing cement and pouring a cement floor. Big improvement. :)

Anyone that may be able to take a few pictures and e mail them, my e mail is wd4ngb@charter.net

506th Historical Artifacts Needed

Hoyt Bruce Moore wrote on 2005-09-25 00:00:00.0

Comments: The 4th Brigade Combat Team and the 506th Council at Fort Campbell, KY are looking for 506th historical artifacts that they can display in the 506th regimental areas at Fort Campbell. If you have any 506th-related artifacts/momentos from the 1st BN, 506th Infantry in South Korea that you would be willing to DONATE, contact 1SG(R) John E. Foley (C Co, 1st BN, 506th, 1990-1991) at 270-798-3215 or chagress@outdrs.net . John is the Museum Technician at the Don F. Pratt Memorial Museum at Fort Campbell, and notes, “the government has a policy against loans . . . stories and pictures are even more valuable in many cases than the artifacts. Often times many of the most mundane items such as belts, pants, socks, etc. that date from that time are very valuable to the museum for making accurate displays to portray how the soldiers lived and survived.”

doughboy Bellmore wrote on 2005-07-16 00:00:00.0

Comments: SCHERERVILLE, Ind. - Pfc. Lowell Wayne Bellar was just 19 when he died more than 50 years ago during a battle in North Korea. On Friday, nearly 200 people gathered to finally give him a proper burial on what would have been his 74th birthday. "Guys always (swear) to each other, 'We're not going to leave anyone on the field.' Well, we know it happens," said Frank Darrington, a Vietnam veteran and commander of the Munster post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Bellar was killed on Dec. 1, 1950, when U.S. troops were surprised by a Chinese army assault near North Korea's Chosin Reservoir. The troops were forced to withdraw under fire, leaving behind many who had been hurriedly buried in shallow graves. In 2001, officials notified Bellar's family that a joint Korean-American team had found remains believed to be his. Joan McFall, who was 12 when her brother was killed, provided DNA to the Army on the chance it would help identify him. She was shocked when it matched. "It was just unbelievable. I could not believe they found him," she said. "We should be happy in one respect - that he's finally home - and sad in another sense," said Bellar's older brother, George, of Munster. "This is the beginning of some closure. At least I hope so." A horse-drawn caisson carried Bellar's flag-draped casket a half-mile to his final resting place, where bagpipers played "Amazing Grace." A 21-gun salute followed, and three doves symbolizing peace were released in Bellar's honor. Eliseo Castaneda, a Marine veteran of the Korean War from East Chicago, said he served in the Chosin Reservoir. "I get a lot of satisfaction in knowing that one in our band of brothers has come home," he said. "It brings back a lot of memories. We don't want to forget about the people who died for our country."

I was only 15 or 16 at the time, and did not understand or pay attention to what he had done during that the war. I remember some film that was taken from the boat, of returned fire to shore, smoke coming from the banks, and a running commentary of what was happening. The memory is not clear. im currently stationed just outside of tongduchon s.korea not far from the dmz the atmosphere here is far unlike the portrait painted by the veterans of the war. Which includes my grandfather..im only a pv2 with less than 2 years in service however it fascinates me that my fellow soldiers and i know so little about what has actually happened here..The only information i can get is from websites..which does not include any conflicts near to where i am stationed the only talk that resinates through the ranks are the talks of what we are about to encounter if we do at all..if any vet is familiar with the area that im at please e-mail me and let me know and i will pass it on to as many soldiers as i can..i am gratefull to all the men and women who has served our country here in korea..and i hope that if the dreadfull task comes again to hand that i will be able to do what all of you did for our country.. my 1 year tour has 11 months left if anyone needs any questions answered as to what its like here now feel free to contact me

Comments: Mr. Barker,

Was out as an invitee today with the garrison commander of Camp's Long and Eagle here in Korea. We were directed to a possible burial site close to the city of Hoengsong, actually about 2 miles east of there. It is a grave site with multiple burials in the area. There may be a possiblilty that we may have found a grave belonging to an American Soldier buried there. We have contacted the 8th Army Mortuary Affairs office and they will be coming to the site.

If youi have any question's as to the information provided above, I will be glad to respond. My friend, Jerry Williams has been deeply involved for many years.

Rspectfully,

Michael E. Bulkley USA AMCOM Camp Eagle, Korea

Comments: Being stationed in Korea now, even though it's been 50 years since the Korean war, when I roll out to the field I can still feel the presence of those lost. I was interested in finding out more about the Korean war and maybe perhaps visiting some places while I completed my year here. Thank you for your site. Very informative, and moving.
