JOHN MAYER wrote on July 9, 2012 City and State: LAS VEGAS NV Unit: B 1ST BN 23RD INF Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN Comments: I was on the Z with B 1/23 inf Oct 70-Apr 71. I filed for AO claim 27th Jan 2011 and just got my rating 5th July 2012. I too thought everything was moving slow, I mean it has been some 42 yearas ago that we got exposed. I finally got feed up with my regional VA office could never get any information out of them. I finally sent a certified letter to Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki, an email to President Obama. I know for sure that the email was acted on becuase my regional office called me to say they got an inquiry from the white house about my claim. I don't know if all this helped but at least I got my 2 cents worth of complaning in about the long delay. Keywords: AO DMZ Korea |

I see VA allows this to be service connected if you were in South Korea to I think 75, why can't they extend that several more years. I am sure residual toxins last years. Keywords: |

STATIONED AT CAMP CARROLL |
CHARLES POWELL wrote on July 3, 2012 City and State: Unit: 46TH TRANS CO. Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN Comments: Good afternoon my fellow vet brothers and sisters, I recently learned of the story that came out last year about the Agent Orange being buried at Camp Carroll in 78. I got there in June of 1981 and left in June of 82. After stumbling on the story about AO while looking up health problems that I'm having, I starting reading everything I could about Camp Carroll on the web. The stories that where done by TV station KPHO in AZ. I watched them all. From the stories I saw and the picture the guys took that buried the barrels I was shocked. I stopped one of the video when it showed a Google map of the camp and where the barrels where said to be buried. What I found was my motor pool right next to the site and my units barrack and chow hall about 200 yards from the site. When I got there in 82 the land arournd our motor pool looked like it had been bulldozed in the last year or two. We where told it was rice paddies that had been covered over. We believed them. I was assigned to the 46th Trans Co. as a 63 Bravo. We hauled everything the 8th Army or 2nd ID needed or wanted. All the way from the harbors in Pusan to the DMZ and JSA. As a mechanic sometimes I went along with the convoys in case of a break down. The other time I was at Carroll working in the motor pool. Now 30 years later I have trembling in my hands and skin problems on most of my body and my feet are covered with bleeding sores that keeps me from being able to wear shoes at times. This started happening about 3 years ago and doctors I went to had no idea what was wrong. I have had turmors rmoved from my right arm that seen to appear out of nowhere. Regarless of what the Military says, there is something evil buried at Camp Carroll. I would love to hear from anyone that was stationed there or anywhere else in Korea that is having health problems. You can contact me at my email address; cambot2009@hotmail.com God bless all the vets that have served and active duty that currently protect this great country. Please vote in November. Our country and our childrens future lay in the balance. I wish you all a happy and safe 4th of July. Keywords: 46th Trans CO. Hill 303. Happy Mountain, Camp Carroll, Suk Chong Dong, Kings Club. CONTINUED POSSIBLE EFFECTS 76-77 |
MICHAEL MILLICAN wrote on June 10, 2012 City and State: DALLAS TX Unit: B CO. !-32 INF 2/ID Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN Comments: It was late 1976, when I developed a unidentified rash that can on suddenly. I didn't think much of it, I just spent some time in the Camp Howze Medical Unit. Was it Aget Orange exposure? It doesn't rely matter now because I know my life will end before the entire Agent Orange saga will be known. I had a nerve test when I first noticed simptoms that something was wrong. The civilan medical doctors could not explain where I may have gotten a strange nerve Neropothy. Basicly, My nerves don't transmit electricity like a normal person. The medical team of doctors from 2 diferent hospitals both showed the same results. They even took a nerve from my foot to try and deturmin what it was. Back then, I was told by the doctors that I had about 5 years before I could no longer walk. Well, I'm still walking and the slow nerves never showed any sign that they were better or worse, only the same. So it was speculated that this had come from something in my past and had already done it's damage. I haven't had it checked from that time. I pass out allot now 2-3 times a year. I hope one day I just don't wake up because I have seen Cancer victums and people with heart problems that lingered in a hospital for long times and that's not how I want to make my exit. It just looks like end life torture to me. My medical records from Camp Howze are gone and I don't think it would matter much if they were there, because the effects are not compensateable for the years 76-77. I only wanted to post this here before I leave the country and drop off the map somewhere in Asia. from the sister unit of the Manchu 1/9 Inf, we have many more posting vets here on the Korean War Project. The numbers of posts of Manch vs. Buccaneers is very offset. HQ of the 2nd ID was at camp Howze before I got there, but why they moved it is anyones guess. I only know that the man that was first in charge of the Camp, was the my Lai massare investigating officer named Colin Powell. And, no matter what anyone says, race was a big issue and may have prompted him to have gotten that asginment. I'm not implying anything, those are only the pre- facts of the Buccaneer Bn. UPHILL BATTLE IF NOT IN KOREA DURING PRESUMPTIVE DATES |
DAVID (ANDY) ANDERSON wrote on March 15, 2012 City and State: Unit: 51ST SIGNAL BN. Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN Comments: Public and Intergovernmental Affairs VA Publishes Final Regulation to Aid Veterans Exposed to Agent Orange in Korea January 25, 2011 Printable Version Need Viewer Software? VA Publishes Final Regulation to Aid Veterans Exposed to Agent Orange in Korea Will Provide Easier Path to Health Care and Benefits WASHINGTON Veterans exposed to herbicides while serving along the demilitarized zone (DMZ) in Korea will have an easier path to access quality health care and benefits under a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) final regulation that will expand the dates when illnesses caused by herbicide exposure can be presumed to be related to Agent Orange. VAs primary mission is to be an advocate for Veterans, said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki With this new regulation VA has cleared a path for more Veterans who served in the demilitarized zone in Korea to receive access to our quality health care and disability benefits for exposure to Agent Orange. Under the final regulation published today in the Federal Register, VA will presume herbicide exposure for any Veteran who served between April 1, 1968, and Aug. 31, 1971, in a unit determined by VA and the Department of Defense (DoD) to have operated in an area in or near the Korean DMZ in which herbicides were applied. Previously, VA recognized that Agent Orange exposure could only be conceded to Veterans who served in certain units along the Korean DMZ between April 1968 and July 1969. In practical terms, eligible Veterans who have specific illnesses VA presumes to be associated with herbicide exposure do not have to prove an association between their illness and their military service. This presumption simplifies and speeds up the application process for benefits and ensures that Veterans receive the benefits they deserve. Click on these links to learn about Veterans' diseases associated with Agent Orange exposure at http://www.publichealth.va.gov/exposures/agentorange/diseases.asp and birth defects in children of Vietnam-era Veterans at http://www.publichealth.va.gov/exposures/agentorange/birth_defects.asp. VA encourages Veterans with covered service in Korea who have medical conditions that may be related to Agent Orange to submit their applications for access to VA health care and compensation as soon as possible so the agency can begin processing their claims. Individuals can go to website http://www.vba.va.gov/bln/21/AO/claimherbicide.htm to get a more complete understanding of how to file a claim for presumptive conditions related to herbicide exposure, as well as what evidence is needed by VA to make a decision about disability compensation or survivors benefits. Additional information about Agent Orange and VAs services for Veterans exposed to the chemical is available at www.publichealth.va.gov/exposures/agentorange. The regulation is available on the Office of the Federal Register website at http://www.ofr.gov/. Keywords: VA,final regulation, presumptive dates |

CHARLES RAYMOND DIX wrote on March 12, 2012 City and State: PORT ST. LUCIE FL Unit: 177TH ASA O/C PYONG TAEK Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN Comments: During spring and summer of 1968, as best I can recall, myself and others carried Indian Tanks of herbicide into the secure compound and sprayed weeds. It was hot, the stuff was allegedly safe, and we sprayed each other. I recall filling my tank from a barrel of oily water with an orange stripe around it. Begining within two years of service, I had a bunch of fatty growths show up under my skin, most about the size of the last joint of a finger. Except the one on my left shoulder where the tank's shoulder strap had worn through the skin--that one was 2 inches long, fat like a frog, with two roots like frog legs. No one else in my family ever had any such growths and no doctor ever said it was anything special. Then, when I went for the Agent Orange registry physical in 2001, the doctor said he'd often seen such fatty growths on men who had been exposed to AO. However, since I was not boots on the ground in Nam, and I did not, and still do not, have any of the listed ways to die from AO, I was told it didn't happen. I eventually ended up service connected for neck injuries and will probably receive more for PTSD. Flash forward to February 2012, when I received a PERSONALIZED Veterans Health Benefits Booklet and found the following statement under my allged unique eligibilty factor: Determined to be a Vietnam-era herbicide-exposed Veteran. Hmmm. Neither my PTSD counselor nor my Vet Service Rep has ever seen that designation. Ray Dix Keywords: |

I have searched, and am still searching, for the Senator Glenn letter and the response from the Dept of the Army. I have been in touch with the archivist for Senator Glenn's papers and he could find nothing. We were located on Charlie Block, RIGHT beside Camp Custer. All of the 2nd ID artillery units are on the list. WE WERE RIGHT BESIDE ALL OF THEM AND IN THEIR AREA. WHY??????? Isn't our unit listed????????? Very few 7th ID units got recognized, but yet almost ALL of the 2nd ID got listed. THIS IS BS! We were there too! We were just as near the DMZ as they were! ALL and every bit of help in this matter is appreciated. The VA is screwing us 7th ID guys, not to mention the fact that they are just plain screwing us all. Come on guys, let's fight these son-of-a-b---hes and MAKE them correct this wrong! We need to fight to have the dates corrected too. Herbicides did not start on 1 April, 1968! Read the bill HR 2297 passed by the House and the Senate, which resulted in President Bush in signing into law the Veterans Benefit Act of 2003. They acknowledged 1 September, 1967 as an earlier date. HOW CAN THE VA PICK AND CHOOSE THE DATES THEY LIKE AND SELECTIVELY OMIT OTHERS?????!!! Let's get together guys and fight these pieces of s--t Keywords: 1/79th FA, 7th ID, Paju-ri, Munsan-ni, Charlie Block, 1/9th Inf, 2nd ID, Camp Paine, Camp Hartell, Camp Custer |

DAVID ANDERSON wrote on January 9, 2012 City and State: ELK WA Unit: COMPANY C 51ST SIGNAL BN. Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN Comments: December 29, 2011 By Walter T. Ham IV, Eighth Army Public Affairs YONGSAN GARRISON, South Korea (Dec. 29, 2011) -- The Republic of Korea-United States Joint Investigation Team announced that it discovered no evidence of Agent Orange during its probe into claims that the toxic defoliant was buried on Camp Carroll. Led by Pokyong National University Chief Professor Doctor Gon Ok and U.S. Forces Korea Engineer Col. Joseph F. Birchmeier, the team concluded its eight- month investigation Dec. 29 at a press conference in the Chilgok County Office. The investigation began in May 2011 following a report on KPHO TV in Phoenix where U.S. veterans claimed they buried Agent Orange on Camp Carroll in 1978. Birchmeier said the bilateral investigation found no evidence that Agent Orange was buried on Camp Carroll and discovered no risk to public health on the U.S. Army post. I want you to know that we have found no definitive evidence that Agent Orange was buried or stored Camp Carroll, said Birchmeier, the lead U.S. investigator. http://www.army.mil/article/71403/Team_concludes_Agent _Orange_investigation_in_Korea/ Keywords: Agent Orange,Korea,Camp Carroll |

My reason was simple -I'm tired of the BS from the VA saying we have to prove boots on the ground for the DMZ and we were not exposed to these chemicals. We are all not getting any younger and we are all experiencing a lot of the same medical problems as the guys that were in Viet Nam. I also told the folks in his office that the Army guys that were stationed at the Z were being treated the same way. We will have to wait and see what happens. Thank you for your service in Korea. LAWRENCE DELARME wrote on November 5, 2011 City and State: LAPORTE IN Unit: B CO 3RD BN 23 INFANTRY 2ND DIVISION Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN Comments: I served in the DMZ in 1968 but was unaware of the use of Agent Orange untill 2007 when a friend of mine called who knew I was there at that time and told me to look up Agent Orange use in Korea in 1968-69. I came across a news confrence with a Defense Dept General in 2000 who said " it is not a conspiracy and we are not hiding anything it just fell through the cracks". 32 years of cracks ???? He also said that the Defense Dept was sending a letter to all the men stationed at the DMZ in certain units confirming the use of Agent Orange. It is now 2011 and I have still not received any letter. The answer is the almighty dollar. No DMZ veteran received any benefits prior to 2001 which translates into hundreds of millions or possibly billions of dollars. I put in a claim in 2007 and was given 20% for Diabetes in 2008. I have multiple diseases secondary to Diabetes but I am being denied because of long term medical records. Many veterans are in the same boat as me. Not knowing you were exposed you did not have anual visits to the doctors office and thus medical records are scarce. I have read many blogs relating to benefits and information on Agent Orange but everyone is missing the big picture. We served our country honorably when our country needed us and they knowingly put our health in harms way and kept it a secret for 32 years. I wonder how many DMZ vets died of cancer without ever knowing they were exposed ? I wonder how many DMZ vets still do not know they were exposed ? The Dmz Vets need to organize and confront the Government about this secret coverup. Keywords: Imjin scout / OP Gladys / patrols / ambush |
