Comments: I was just a seventeen year-old,guy from Phoenix, Arizona whose Naval Reserve unit was "called up" during the Korean era. I entered Boot Camp at the Naval Training Station (San Diego)in June of 1952. Our Chief Petty Officer was Chief Castillo and our Company was #440. Doug Patterson was in our Company as was a guy named Philpenny. Chief Castillo appointed me as Recruit CPO. Although we did win the Excellency Trophy, I did not think I was a very good leader. I went on to be trained as an Aviation Machinist Mate; Aerial Gunnery at Ream Field (Mexican border); Naval Air Training Station in Norman, OK.; O&R on Coronado Is and finally to Litchfield Naval Air Facility outside of Phoenix, Ariz.
Trying to run down old friends from those days; and a 1952 (August or Sept.) Boot Camp Graduation photo of our 440 Company on the grinder before the reviewing stand, being presented with the Excellency Trophy. The photo was also in a book published by Abe the Newsboy in 1952.
My very best wishes to any of my forner buddies.

Looking for Recruit Training Remembrance Book.... |

Comments: I wonder if anyone has a copy of the "yearbook"-type of publication we ordered and were supposed to receive at the end of recruit training? I never got mine. Supposedly, a commercial photographer followed us on occasion, keeping a record of our training. (marching on the "grinder", obstacle course, fire-fighting, nomclature, going to and from classes and the messhall, etc....)We all paid for it in advance, and I never got mine. I still remember Jim Lumberman from NC, Ralph Sweet from Kentucky, Jim Dunnigan from Gettysburg, Ensign Mills, etc...Thanks Phil Werntz, Manassas, Va. This was the summer of 1954

Comments: Co. 666 was one of the best. We got to carry the Meatball Flag several weeks. Remember the week of mess cooking, I got lucky,I got the spud locker. What a job. Someone has to do it! Some time later, I went aboard the U.S.S. St. Paul CA 73 to visit a couple sailors that I grew up with, and there was Chief Chromer on duty as the Assistant OD. What a surprise! I got to swap some scuttlebutt with him. I will always wonder what happened to some of the recruits, Workman, Mo. Harmon, Mo. Newland,(spelling???), San Diego, Schneider, St. Louis, Cogan, from Gary, Ind., and so many more. Wish we could have a reunion.
It's ok to wish, Jordan A. L.

Comments: I have plenty of shipmates' pics which my dad left to me before he died.
I hope somebody can help me put names to these faces. My dad was Menelio Samson.
I've been looking all over the net for anything regarding USNTC San Diego Company 49 and USS Hopewell in that timeline but to no avail...
Help!

Comments: 25 recruits from Pittsburgh, Pa. area sent to San Diego, Calif. for bootcamp. (Camp Elliott) I spent almost 4 years on shore duty. Never stationed on board a ship. Visited almost every ship in San Diego Harbor on weekends to see what it was like,...even sub s. Kodiak was really exciting,...especially since I lived for hunting and fishing. Would appreciate a contact from the Pittsburgh area. Probably only a handful of us left.

I was in 120 first, got pneumonia and spent time at Balboa Hosp., then reasssigned to Company #161. My oh my, that was 51 years ago! I don't remember Company Commander names: 120 was a chief Bosun mate I think, and 161 was a Storekeeper first class. Russ

Comments: I have acquired two photographs of Company 365 R.T.Salter QMT. CO. CMDR. 13 April 1951. U.S. Naval Training Center-Great Lakes, Ill. One is signed by the guys and one has their names labled by rows. I acquired them simply because I am an antique dealer and they ended up in my "Stuff"....They should be with a man or family member from the company. If someone who has a connection with one or more of these men, please contact me by e-mail or leave a message on my cell..... and I will send them to your home free of charge. My dad fought in Korea and I will consider it a tribute to his service to our country. OR, you folks can help me track down someone who is connected with Company 365. Thanks, Kay Panamarenko
