Looking for Recruit Training Remembrance Book.... |

Comments: I wonder if anyone has a copy of the "yearbook"-type of publication we ordered and were supposed to receive at the end of recruit training? I never got mine. Supposedly, a commercial photographer followed us on occasion, keeping a record of our training. (marching on the "grinder", obstacle course, fire-fighting, nomclature, going to and from classes and the messhall, etc....)We all paid for it in advance, and I never got mine. I still remember Jim Lumberman from NC, Ralph Sweet from Kentucky, Jim Dunnigan from Gettysburg, Ensign Mills, etc...Thanks Phil Werntz, Manassas, Va. This was the summer of 1954

Comments: Co. 666 was one of the best. We got to carry the Meatball Flag several weeks. Remember the week of mess cooking, I got lucky,I got the spud locker. What a job. Someone has to do it! Some time later, I went aboard the U.S.S. St. Paul CA 73 to visit a couple sailors that I grew up with, and there was Chief Chromer on duty as the Assistant OD. What a surprise! I got to swap some scuttlebutt with him. I will always wonder what happened to some of the recruits, Workman, Mo. Harmon, Mo. Newland,(spelling???), San Diego, Schneider, St. Louis, Cogan, from Gary, Ind., and so many more. Wish we could have a reunion.
It's ok to wish, Jordan A. L.

Comments: 25 recruits from Pittsburgh, Pa. area sent to San Diego, Calif. for bootcamp. (Camp Elliott) I spent almost 4 years on shore duty. Never stationed on board a ship. Visited almost every ship in San Diego Harbor on weekends to see what it was like,...even sub s. Kodiak was really exciting,...especially since I lived for hunting and fishing. Would appreciate a contact from the Pittsburgh area. Probably only a handful of us left.
Keywords: Yeoman School, Motion Picture Operator School, San Diego. Na val Supply Center, Oakland, CA, Naval Station, Kodiak, AL. Dec., 1952-Nov. 1956.

Comments: Went to Greatlakes back in 1951. Was in CO.629 and later graduated with CO. 649. Served three years at Commissary Store at Norfolk, Va and then one year on the USS Canisteo, AO99. Would like to hear from any one from those times or places. Also would like info as to where I may be able to get a Graduation Book called "THE KEEL'" from Great Lakes with my graduation class names in it
