SEARCHING FOR INFO ABOUT DAD, RICHARD D. MCDOWELL, DRILL SERGEANT

Comments: Hello! I am searching for information--and any colorful stories, good OR bad--about my father, who was an Army Drill Sergeant and served during the Korean War. He is currently very ill and on oxygen making it very hard for him to speak, so all I know is based on what I can remember from the stories he told me while I was much younger. His full name is Richard David McDowell and he was raised in Shelby County, Tennessee, born around 1937. I know he was stationed in Germany for a while, but I can't tell you exactly WHEN during his stint in the Army. He had black hair, brown eyes, and was an avid smoker. He is not a tall man (around 5'6) but what he lacked in height I'm SURE he made up for it with his temper (said with love), so I imagine there may have been a lot of shouting and veins popping out of his neck from time to time. He also has a wicked sense of humor, is of higher than average intelligence, and enjoys playing chess--so much so he became a chess champion multiple times throughout his life. He married young (and divorced young), his first marriage resulting in my half-sister, named October. (I have no idea if he was in the Service during his first marriage. He met my mother in his late twenties and they will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in just three days!) I would LOVE to know more about my father and his Army days, both good and bad stories...believe me, even if you hated his guts, whatever you've got to tell me won't upset me in the least. I don't know how much time my father has left, and I'd like to know all there is to know. Please don't hesitate to ask me any questions. Thanks very much for your time!

Comments: I'm looking for anyone who may have known or served with my grandfather. His name was Herbert Lee Fell. He served in Alaska sometime between '49 and '53. I don't know much about his service aside from he was drafted in Michigan and a lot of the guys he served with him were from Michigan as well. From what I know when he graduated basic training they sent him to Ft. Carson (Camp Carson at the time) and then marched to Alaska. By the time he left Alaska he reached the rank of corporal. He worked as artillery, but because how he viewed respect for authority, or lack there of, he spent a lot of time peeling potatoes and picking up trash. I'm not sure where he was stationed, I know he was somewhere around Fairbanks so he was probably at Ft. Greely. I have pictures of him in the service, but can't attach them to this, so if anyone is unsure or thinks they know I could send them to you. Any and all help is appreciated.

Comments: I would like to locate/touch base with anyone who served in the Army during 1950-1952 with my dad. His name was Joseph Glen Hill. He was from Patrick County, VA. He did his basic training in Fort Benning, GA, and was stationed in Germany. He was part of the 518th Eng C company. I have a few of the souvenirs he brought home from Germany, including an Agfa Jsolette V camera and a ceramic beer stein. I would love to know where in Germany he purchased them, as well as any stories his Army buddies would like to share. Dad passed away in 1969 just a few weeks before I turned three. I'm trying to find out as much information about his life before he and my mom were married, which includes his time in the Army.

Keywords: Warren Scott and Cecil Hall were two of Dad's friends.

Comments: First stationed in Leipheim Met my future in the library married in Augsburg Nov. 1952. Would have to admit the draft was the best 2 years of my life. As my spouse of 63 years was a diamond in the rough. And we view the Movie, Because your Mine, with Mario Lanza. Which was filmed in Atterbury Indiana in 1951. Where i can pick myself out marching.

Comments: Greetings: It sure is nice to read all the e-mails from veterans and family members
who were stationed at Ashiya AFB during the Korean War. Our family was stationed
there between 1954 and 1957. I was 12yrs.old at the time and my father was a pilot,
flying C-119's. I'm doing research to find out what squadron he was in. I assume it
was either the 483Troop Carrier group or the 817.He was a lieutenant at the time
and nicknamed his plane after my brother and sister, Dennis-N-Denise,with cartoon
characters depicting their names. My fathers name was Lt. Mitchell Stefanski. We
lost him in an air collision while he was stationed at Manila AFB in 1965. I'm
trying to replicate his plane to honor his memory. I thought it would be great to
pass down to his grandchildren and great grandchildren after I'm gone. If there is
anyone out there who would know if there were any special markings for either of
the two squadrons I would like to know. I'm trying to replicate the model as close
to the original as possible. Unfortunately, the only picture I have of dad's plane
shows my brother and sisters insignia. God bless any and all who have served or are
now serving our country in the armed services.

Comments: Am searching for brothers born in Europe, 1945-1946 or 1950-1951..Mother's name may be Margaret, grandfather was a physician.
George E. Hulett, US Army from Arkansas served 1943-1946 and graduated OCS 1948-1953,
engaged in military actions at Slapton Sands, Normandy, Belgium and Germany until the end of the war. Returned in 1949 Germany to a Supply Depot as 2nd. Lte..my mother, sister and I joined him there and we lived there 2-3 years.
Dad had a relationship that resulted in the birth of possible twin boys, whose mother wrote to my grandfather Denver Hulett at Melbourne, Arkansas after his 1946 discharge. My father contacted the family in 1983-1984 and was advised to not contact the boys, their mother had married and the stepfather had adopted the boys. How can I obtain information about these brothers? I promised my dad I would locate them and i have been searching since 1991. Dad died in 1988.
Please contact me with any information. Dad looked like the actor Kirk Douglas!
