Comments: Greetings:
I am a graduate student at the Univ. of Texas @ Austin writing a paper on M/SGT Travis Watkins. He was from Gladewater Texas. He was KIA on approximately Sept. 3, 1950 near Yongsan. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. I have some military records and some press clippings, but little to no first-hand accounts of the life and service of M/Sgt. Watkins. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
PS - This paper long ago quit being an academic venture for me. I am determined that the story of M/Sgt. Watkins and those who served with him be preserved for future generations.

Comments: Looking for any information on SFC William L "Buster" Hackney missing in action on September 1, 1950. I have been researching for any information on him for his family who are in the dark on his disappearance since they have not been told completely of what happened by his government. Here is what we knowat this time.
AUGUST 31, 1950 - Wrote a letter to hie mother stating that he getting ready to cross the river (Naktong) that night and for her not to worry about him.
SEPTEMBER 1, 1950 - North Korean troops crossed the Naktong River at numerous points at the bulge and north and south of it and struck the 2nd Division, which recently had gone into the line. At the western edge of the bulge the 9th North Korean troops drove away Company B of the 9th Regiment with heavy casualities and with the shattering of Company B left a wide hole through which thousands of North Koreans surged towards Yongsan. By the morning of September 1st North Koreans had penetrated all the way through to the North-South Changnyong road and had cut the 2nd Division in two. The enemy had punched a hole six miles wide and eight miles deep in the middle of the 2nd Division line and the frontline battalions of the 9th and 23rd Regiments were reeling from the blows
Appreciate any info that you may have, please e-mail me. Thank you.

Comments: Took basic training with Richard Wasco at Fort Knox KY, and during this time we became very good friends. We were then transfered to D Co. 9th Inf. At Fort Lewis, Washington to beef up the 9th after a few months we were sent to Korea as a 9th Inf. Reg. Combat Team wish took up positions on the Naktong River. We were there a short time when the NKA made a heavy push and crossed the Naktong. Richard and I were on outposts protecting Co. D and was told by the CO to vacate and head South and we did so immediately. The next morning I was placed on a hill with 4 others with a 50 cal. to cover a rd. jct. and keep it open. At about 3 p.m. same day the CO ordered us back again. We then took up positions South of a small town (can't remember the name)to stop the NK Advance. At this time I had a chance to talk to a friend who said that he and Richard were retreating through a rice patty when Richard supposedly took a serious bullet hit and died. Would like to know if anyone knows anything about Richard's death at this time. Richard and I always said that if either of us didn't make it that we would contact the family. I had Richard's address as his mother had written me several times in Knox but lost it in the confussion of war. Do not know if Richard had any other relatives. Any information would be appreciated.

Floyd Martin Hill 165 |

Comments: Sgt. Floyd W. Martin Jr., my uncle, served and was awarded the "Bronze Star Medal for valor in action against the North Korean Communists during a savage four day long battle for Hill 165 on the Korean central front...During the battle, Sergeant Martin, a member of the Pioneer and Ammunition Platton of a headquarters company of a regimental combat team 'without regard for his own personal safety and well being, and on his on initiative, volunteered to make numerous trips to rifle companies of the battalion with ammunition and food personally supervised the loading of ammunition and supplies while under intense artillery, mortar and small arms fire'....Seargeant Martin refused to rest or eat during the battle, until he was finally ordered to do so after three days." Maj. Gen. L. B. Keiser, commanding gen of the Indianhead Division personally presented the Bonze Star to him on Aug. 28.
"Dub" as he was called by family was tall, lanky with black hair and brown eyes and was of Native American heritage (though he probably never discussed this). He was later killed in Nov. 26, 1950 and apparently must have been transferred to Hq. Co., 1st Bn 9th Infantry. He was MIA from Nov. 26, 1950 until the editor of his hometown newspaper received a letter of response from Mr. Albert C. Chestnut of 20 Jan 1954. He stated that Floyd was "killed by a handgrenade thrown by a Chinese Communist Soldier..It occurred on the night of Thanksgiving or the following night in November 1950"....
I am searching for the names of these two battles so that I may research them and any information from anyone who may have known him.
Thanks much from my mom and myself!

Comments: I am looking for a medic, American Artillery Officer, that was also a pow. He was a black man. I was near Kunuri when I was wounded. We were first taken to a school house, where this man helped me. If anyone has any info. Please e-mail or write.
JAMES YOUNG, JOSEPH TRAVERS, MARTIN MCDONOUGH RAMON MARINEZ, GEORGE MCDONNELL, JAMES HODGES, JOE MCNEIL, EDWARD COLLINS, & JOHNNIE TRAHEAL, who was in the 24th, not sure of spelling of his last name. These men where in POW Camps 1,3,5, but I can't remember much else due to my Ptsd, my mind won't go there. I need something to trigger my memory. I was released from Camp 5 sometime in Feb 1952, with a bunch of other guys, we all in bad shape, I was not talking at all, so in the Mash Unit they put down that I was shot in the leg by a Korean Houseboy, had a self inflicted gun shot wound, was WIA, the latter is true. My files are gone in the 1973 fire so all the VA has are my medical records, which are wrong. I had a paper stating I was a POW but due to my then undiagnosed PTSD in 1953 I threw it out to get rid of the memories. I remembered the names of these guys after I had been asked to give a speech on POW rememberance day, it came flooding back, but not everything. I found one guy Wyman Kaiser in Jan 1999, called him and his son told me that his father had died a few days before I called. He was a POW in Korea, but never, never talked about it. How many guys out there are still suffering from undiagnosed PTSD. They won't even recognise my claim even tho I have been in treatment for 6 years, and gave them letters from 2 of my doctors. They say I have to have received a CIB PH, and my DD214 states I received both along with the SS and BS, but they have a different one on file and won't accept my original onionskin one as the original. I don't know of anyone who has two different DD214's I really got shafted and no matter how I try I can not get anyone of any importance to tell me how I can sort it out. The DAV was supposed to be handling my case when my last claim was denied, but that has come to nothing. The service officer was supposed to appeal for me, but now he has moved to the district office so that is the last I will hear of that. I know they are just waiting for me to die. Its very hard when you know you gave your all and you truly believe in your country, here I am on crutches and sometimes confined to a wheelchair, because of my leg and back problems. If I could locate any of these guys maybe they could verify I was in POW camp, and on many of the marches. I was so very young and to think volunteered to go into the army, when I was 17. I hope someone will remember me, I am just a little skinny guy, my Dad was Filipino, but I was born in San Francisco. Please let me know if anyone out there out there can help me, I'd sure appreciate it. I don't know where to go next. Please look at the comments column to find out how I was captured and other information. thanks. Larry M. Casilac v
