Comments: What a beautiful Web Site! A place for all to communicate! Thank YOU! My Dad, P.W. (Prentis Wayne) Burden was in the Korean War beginning in 30 Jan 1952. Just like many others that fought for our freedom, he is hesitant to discuss this war with his children and we don't have a whole lot of information to go on. He is from Walton, Kentucky, now residing in Florida. He was injured in late 1953 from a mortar shot while driving a Jeep, near Old Baldy Hill, in Seoul, Korea. If you know my dad or possibly the other gentlemen driving the other Jeep, Schultz or Schulz, from the Louisville/Lexington Kentucky area, please email me at: hapihari@yahoo.com. My brother and I are looking to honor my dad, at my brother's wedding next month. Any information I can speak about would be helpful.

I STAYED WITH THIS UNIT UNTIL SOMETIME IN SEPT 1951. I WADED THE HAN RIVER UNDER FIRE, SAW THE YALU RIVER FROM A VERY VANTAGE POINT, WAS ABLE TO SAY HELLO TO THE CHINESE WHEN THEY CAME INTO THE PICTURE, WENT THRU THE KUNERI ORDEAL, WAS WOUNDED IN SEPT 51 AND MADE IT OUT. DECIDED TO TRY THE NAVY NEXT AND STAYED THERE 19 YEARS, WENT NAVY CIVIL SERVICE FOR ANOTHER 16 YEARS AND NOW IN REAL ESTATE. CAN'T REMEMBER MANY OF THE GUYS I WAS WITH, HIWATHA JONES (BLOODY) WAS ONE OF MY CLOSEST FRIENDS. I WAS A WHITE REPLACEMENT FROM GEORGIA IN AN ALL BLACK UNIT, SO I DIDN'T HAVE A LOT OF FRIENDS AT FIRST, BUT AFTER ABOUT 6 MONTHS WE ALL LOOKED ALIKE ANYWAY. WOULD BE INTERESTING TO KNOW IF ANY OF THOSE GUYS ARE STILL AROUND!

Comments: Vernon Ellsworth was a medic in Co. K, 3d Bn., 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division in Korea in 1952-1953. This spring during the Memorial Day Ceremony in Coffeyville, Kansas he was finally awarded his Purple Heart Medal for a severe head wound he had suffered. It has been almost fifty years since he was hit. Evidently there were a lot of casualties in the engagement and Vernon's paperwork for his purple heart was misplaced all this time. Vernon does not have access to the internet but he would love to hear from any of his old comrades in arms. If any one would like to communicate with him I will be delighted to receive, copy and deliver any messages to him.

I am also a veteran of the Korean War and served from March 1953 through June 1954. I was in the 10th Eng. Combat Battalion, 3d Division, and was involved in several of the last gasp battles including Outpost Harry.

Comments: My uncle was CPL Henry McKinley Porter of L Company, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He is listed as POW Nov 25,1950. I would very much appreciate any and all information or reference to such, relating to my uncles' experiences up to and including the time of his reported capture Nov 25,1950 and death Jan 11,1951. I would be honored to hear from anyone who knew him or shared his experiences leading up to that time and/or knew what happened to him Nov 25, 1950. My wish as Family Historian is to gather and preserve the memory of my uncle and those with which he shared the last months/Days of his life.

Comments: Took basic training at Breckindidge,Ky.from I/3/51 till 3/6/51. Flew to Fort Lewis, Wa. and then on to Japen. After about three days shipped to Korea. Then after about 5 days was dropped behind the enemy line in N. Kores.(mission) Find out how the enemy was getting their supplies to their front line. I headed south along with another person, hoping to hook up with a outfit from the USA. After about 5 days we came into the Second Division. I was wounded on the 2nd of Sept.1951. Returned to Korea again and was wounded the second time, sent to Japan Hospital and on to the states.

PFC Sylvester Braun,

PETER J. (PJ) Braun wrote on 2001-03-17 00:01:25.0

Comments: I am interested in trying to contact anyone who knew my uncle, PFC Sylvester A. Braun, a proud member of "L" company, 9th Infantry, and would be willing to share some of their memories with those who loved him.

Based on research into Army records, we know he was captured on February 14, 1951, near the village of Chuam-ni by a regiment of the 116th Division, 39th (Communist Chinese) Army.

Initially held near Hoengsong, PFC Braun was worked north into hill country near the present DMZ, then west across the Imjin River, and finally north again to a complex of POW holding camps near Suan, North Korea. Based on conversations with survivors recorded in Army records, the group he was with arrived around March 15th at the first Suan site, know as the Bean Camp.

Captain John T. Hindman, an officer formerly assigned to the same organization as PFC Braun, submitted a statement that he saw PFC Braun die “about May 1, 1951” at the Suan Bean Camp, as a result of “starvation”.

My uncle was never listed as among those held by the Communist Chinese or Korean forces and his remains were never recovered. On the 50th anniversary of his death, members of his family are trying to keep his memory alive and would appreciate information from anyone who knew him.
