Comments: My Daddy served in Korea. I am not sure where but he was in the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, Charlie Company. Approximate dates were Nov of 1950 to July of 1952. I am searching for any information at all including stories and pictures. He is deceased now nearly 10 years. His name was Herbert Scott Decker. My Daddy was approximately 190 years of age. His battle buddy was Robert L. Tetrick. I do not know the battles they fought in but I know they ate alot of split pea soup and had three pair of socks between them and my Daddy used to put the wet socks next to his body to dry in freezing weather so his buddy would have a dry pair to wear. I know that my Daddy was promoted quickly due to the fact that their original company was wiped out leaving approximately 3 of the original company until more troops were sent. If you have pictures or stories please contact me. God Bless!

Comments: Captain Cloutman is my sister's father. He was captured in N. Korea in November 1950. He died a prisoner Feb. 1951.

We believe we just found a picture from inside the prison camp taken by a Chinese officer of 10 American prisoners. We believe Capt. Cloutman is one of the men pictured. The picture was taken Nov. 1950 right after Capt. Cloutman was captured.

We are searching for any American prisoner survivers that may have been with him. We are trying to determine details of his death. In the photo, Rodney is in good health and in a new winter prison uniform. Please e-mail or call with any information.

Thank you, Tim

Benny Henderson wrote on 2009-02-22 02:19:08.0

Comments: My Name is Benny Henderson. PFC Benny Berry was my grandfather. My father's name is too Benny Berry (JR) and I was intended to be Benny Berry III. I have been researching my grandfather's service to this country in hopes to piece together his life story. I understand that he made a great sacrifice for this country (especially at a time that did not always allow him his full rights as a US Citizen because he was African American). I believe that he served his country proudly regardless and I want to honor his sacrifice. As a result of my Grandfather's sacrifice, my own father grew up without a father for much of his life and the effects of that contributed to me growing up without one as well. I am now trying to bridge that gap with my own children and bring to end an unfortunate cycle. Knowing that my grandfather died serving his country allows me to feel some comfort in the fact that we today still feel the effects of his untimely departure.

Unfortunately, his medical records at the branch in St. Louis Missouri or Kansas City Kansas where destroyed when there was a fire. John was shot in the left leg and right knee. If he can prove that he was shot he won't have to pay for his medication anymore. Went to a Swedish hospital Pusun and was then transferred to the 141st General Hospital in Japan. Please let us know if you can help. He will need a written statement stating that you remember him and that you can verify that he was shot. My name is Coleen Ehase and my email is Yelodaise@yahoo.com.

Comments: Does anyone remember my grandfather Louis L. Falco ??

Louis L. Falco, made master sargent while serving during the Korean War with the US Army 9th Regiment, 2nd Division. Sometime in 1952, I believe it was march 1952.

Would be the best to hear from anyone if they served with him or remember him in anyway. he was in the army from 1950-1952, he recieved 2 purple hearts, silver star, bronze star, and some other various medals I have.

He just passed on 12/01/07, I thought it'd be cool to research some of his past. any and all info would be very much appericated.

I was only 6 years old at the time and only know he was in the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division for the Army. I know he is buried in Grafton, WV. My mother only told me he volunteer to go to the front line and was killed going up a hill side. If anybody knows anything about him or who was with him when he got killed, I would really appreciate all information. We have a Korean War Memorial in Pittsburgh, PA down at the Northshore which I visit quite often, but do not know much about him as a serviceman. God Bless and Thank you for your time.

Capt. Warner H. Harms Identified and Returned Home

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
Anne Woods wrote on 2006-05-29 00:58:42.0

Comments: For anyone who may have known my mother's husband, First Lieutenant Warner H. Harms, I'd like to share that he's finally at rest in California. After he was declared KIA he was promoted to the grade of Captain. In 1999 his remains were found near the Ch'onch'ong River. The U.S. Army did an impressive job excavating, identifying and finally burying Warner with full military honors. The family was furnished with a detailed report complete with photos of each step of the investigation.

My mother, newly-wed to Warner at the time he went MIA, worked her entire life to support efforts to find and return him and other servicemen lost in Korea. By the time it finally happened for Warner, she was suffering the effects of dementia so I'm not sure she absorbed the amazing fact that he was finally laid to rest at home. Still, it's a comfort to know that this can happen, even after fifty years.

If any of you knew Warner I would love to hear stories of your time with him.

Harvey Ambrose wrote on 2006-04-14 10:57:30.0

Comments: Hello,

I'm a collector and US Army veteran (Vietnam) and am seeking information about a helmet. It's a standard WWII M1 Helmet, except that it has a Korean War modification to adapt it to paratrooper use. The name inside is PFC Richard Clark, whose name shows up as being a member of 1st Platoon, Company G, 9th Inf. It has a unit insignia painted on the sides in white paint, with which I'm unfamiliar.

I'm asking for the following information: 1. Were any elements of the 9th Airborne? 2. Did any 9th unit insignias look like a martini glass with a crescent-moon base? 3. Does anyone know contact information for PFC Clark (I have his serial number and it begins with "RA-13-######)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Harvey

Only a few guys from his company were taken with him. He was held in prison camp #5 though he did get moved to a few others. He was released with the last batch of soldiers 3 months after the war ended. He is still alive though his health is not great and he would just like to know if there is anyone out there that he knew back when. Comments: I arrived at Pusan in late July 1950, on what I understood was the first boatload of troops to reach there from Stateside, Fort Lewis, Washington, aboard a tub named the SULTAN. March 1951, I was among one of the first groups of whites to integrate the 3rd Battalion of the 9th, which until then had had all black enlisted men and just a few black officers. I served in the Mortar Platoon of "M" Company until June. Our company commander was Cpt. BLACKSTOCK, an older, gray-headed WW II retread, and our platoon leader was 1st Lt. John M. BEEBE, both whites. Among the brothers in the platoon that I especially remember was Cpl. Joe SPEED, who I think was from Cleveland, Ohio. A good boxer back at Fort Lewis, Joe was one of the best men I ever met. He had an infectious smile, a pleasant laidback manner, and fine sense of humor, all of which made the hard days of climbing near vertical mountains with 45 to 50 pounds of 81 mm mortar, pass faster. Other brothers were an older man, a Pfc STEWART, who had the flattest feet I ever saw; Sfc LOVELADY, NCOIC of FDC; and Pvt. Melvin HAMILTON. The whites were Cpl. Robert WEED, Pfc Leon E. GURLEY, and Pfc Richard "Dickie" TENANT. I would love to hear from any of these guys, or any one who knew (or knows) them.

Anyone know of a blue book??

Comments: My father Russell (Mickey) Park served in Korea. He has recently been sharing some of his experiences with his children and grandchildren. He has mentioned on several occassions that he had received a "blue book" which gave information on his unit etc. He had left the book with his mother and it was never returned to him when she passed - no one knows what happened to it.

I would very much like to locate a copy of this "blue book" for him.

Has anyone ever heard of such a book and if so know how I would get one for him?

. I know it would mean a great deal to him to have this. I have done extensive internet searches but have come up empty handed. Thank you for your time and assistance

Gerald Gaston - Farmersville, Texas

I'm looking for a very good friend who served with me during 1946-48 in
the 9th Infantry, 2nd Division, at Ft. Lewis, Washington. I was
discharged in June, 1948 while Sgt. Gaston remained in the service and
served in Korea where he was wounded while drawing maps of North
Korea.

I do not know if he was still attached to the 2nd Infantry Division
at that time or if he had been transferred to another division. He was
probably transferred (or possibly discharged and recalled) as he was a
First Cook in C Company of the 9th when I last saw him. I believe he
was in North Korea before war was officially declared.

Gerald Gaston came from the small town of Farmersville, Texas and,
after being discharged from the army, returned to the Dallas, Texas
area.

I have no further record of him. Can you help?

the confusion at that time was bad. after being sent to the hospital

everyone that i knew was no longer with the unit to include an

there is a book called "second to none". this book reports fairly

I was sent to Alaska after completing basic and he was sent to Korea.

Looking for my father' name. He was MIA then status changed to POW.
Died while POW 2/15/51 while in the hands of the Chinese.

Name Iva Brown Tadlock, home state was Oklahoma. Was stationed at
Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas, when he was sent to Korea.
Surgical Technician with MASH unit.

Note: he died at the Mining Camp

More: You also mentioned to me at the time that he was "wounded" and
captured at the battle of Kunuri. Are there any other data base files
that have information as to his capture? I have written for POW records
at Fort Meade, MD. They were prompt with an answer which my husband,
who is an attorney, was the only person who could even remotely
understand what they were saying. My husband said the POW records did
exist but they weren't going to let me have them. They did say I
could appeal their decision. They have forwarded my request for records
to the NPRC in St. Louis.

He is buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Tx.
That was our home when he left for Korea. It was all handling so very
indifferent when my mother got her first telegram saying my father was
missing. A year or two later another telegram arrived saying he died
while a POW. About 2 years after that another telegram arrived saying
his remains were enroute to the US and to make arrangements for his
burial. Most everyone who has posted a message on the KWP says their
father was MIA or POW that died while in camp.

Robert was adopted as a baby by Howard and Lucile Angevine. They were
good friends of my grandparents. After some of the POW's were returned
Howard contacted a returned POW who was held at the same camp as
Robert.

The returned POW refused to tell Howard any information about Robert
and according to my mother, Howard never spoke of Robert again.

Howard and Lucile have since passed away, as have my grandparents.

Text of article in the JACKSON CITIZEN PATRIOT dated January 28, 1954.

SGT. ANGEVINE DIED IN PW CAMP, SAYS U.S.

Sgt. Robert H. Angevine, 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard C. Angevine,
235 W. Palmer, reported missing in action in Korea since Dec. 1, 1950
died in a prison camp later that month his parents have been notified
by the Defense department.

Sgt. Angevine, a radioman in the infantry, entered military service
Jan. 13, 1949. On Jan. 10, 1951 his parents recieved a telegram stating
that their son was missing in action.

Sgt. Angevine was graduated from Jackson High School in 1948 and
previously had attended the Bloomfield, T.A. Wilson and West
Intermidiate schools. He was employed by the Acme Paint Co. for a
brief period before entering military service.

Surviving in addition to the parents is his grandmother, Mrs. Erma
Joris of Jackson.

I would like to donate these items for display somewhere as Howard has
no living relatives. Can you supply a fitting memorial? Also Howard's
remains were never recovered.

There is one other question I have. If soldier died in a POW camp what
was the North Korean policy on disposition of remains?

Thank you for your time and any answers you can give me would be welcome.

parents. I was three.

With no jobs around for a man with no education and living in the
country, he jumped at the chance to go into the Army and improve himself
for our future. He was trained to be a Medic and his diploma was sent
home with pride smeared all over it.

He wrote home and told of his plans to continue his education in the
health field. He had found something that interest him and he discovered
that he was someone important to his society. He was growing up fast
and he was excited about his furture.

Then the War came... he was sent to Korea, but still his letters came

He wanted his car ready when he came home. He said the two of us would

My Daddy died so very hungry and so very cold and so very sick. He
died in a Death Camp that was so terrible that few can even imagine the
terrors there. He died not knowing that I would love him forever and
miss him with all my heart for the rest of my life.. I was too young to
tell him.

He died with out knowing the beautiful grandchildren he had coming.
My son who I'm told is so much like him...The Great Grandchildren are
here now and he didn't even imagine them.

But I tell them about him every chance I get. They're too young to
know and they sometimes refuse to listen, but one day..all that I've

will be found and they will know about this man that I still grieve for
this man I still call Daddy.

which he was hit in the legs from explosives.

As I wrote you earlier, it was a field award and was told to make it

In Able co. BAR-man,then squad leader (think it was 2nd squad).

Have had an air taxi in Alaska the last 30 years. I remember
my asst. sqd.ldr. was named Kiepert, pretty sure plt. Sgt. was
Shaw, had a good friend named Thibedoux, and a lot of others
who's names have faded but not their faces.

I would like to hear from anyone who remembers. There was a
man named Wise..not in my platoon..who was killed near me.

He had a popless grenade hanging from his pocket that went off
inside his coat....might be the one mentioned in your "looking
for' column.I don't remember the date but we were reinforcing
the Korean Whitehorse Div in reserve if anybody can add to that.

So Wise was in the 1st Batt, and maybe even in Able Co. that I saw
killed, but I don't know if there was another wise in 2nd Batt. but
I doubt it.

On 6 Oct 1952 the 1st platoon(that was us) went into blocking position
behind a ROK outfit while they were fighting at Whitehorse Hill, and
that on the 10th the 2nd platoon made an attack up the ridge of the
T-Bone, and it looks like we moved up, though still behind the ROKs.

Anyway, Wise was killed on the 11th, and there was a man named Wise
who was killed near me, moving up the hill ,when a popless grenade
went off inside his jacket. We weren't in combat, just moving our
position up, so this was pretty sudden and unexpected and we considered
it a freak accident. I think now this was the answer; but wouldnt
want to say for sure in case there was another Wise in the 2nd platoon
who may have been a casualty but it would be quite a coincidence.

If I can get in touch with Carla someday, and she has a letter from
him from then, maybe we can pin it down a little closer. The man I'm
talking about had to be in our platoon, and maybe even Able Co.

Just for your interest, we later were on the T-Bone,2500 yards in
front of the MLR, on either Eerie or Arsenal(whichever was out the
farthest!) for 3 weeks. We didn't have it bad although of course we
were scared out there but weren't hit by troops ,just lot's of artillery
fire and sniping; but were relieved by the 7th Div, and they got hit
really hard and over-run with casualties and prisoners taken, so we felt
we squeaked through that one!

Mostly we did night patrols out around 3 Sisters and the really
dangerous part would have been to get lost and try to come home through
the Thai regiment that was attatched to us .

THE FIRST BATTLE OF THE NAKTONG BULGE Page 303

That night, 11-12 August, North Koreans built up their roadblock east of
Yongsan to greater strength and extended it to a point three miles east
of the town. A staff officer awakened Colonel Hill before daylight to
inform him that the enemy had ambushed several ambulances and trucks two
miles east of Yongsan. Although hard-pressed at Cloverleaf, Hill
immediately ordered F Company, 9th Infantry, out of the line there and
dispatched it together with a platoon of mortars to attack the roadblock.

The 15th Field Artillery Battalion helped by turning some of its guns to
fire on it.

He joined up with the 2nd Inf Div at Port in Washington State. He had
just completed a tour of duty in Okinawa and was on a troop Ship
returning to the U.S. (Ft Lewis, WA) when the Korean Conflict broke out.

He immediately upon arriving at Port, was assigned to Co A, 9th Regt,
2nd Inf Div as filler and went with 2nd to Korea. Was wounded twice,
once in arm and once in leg from July 1950 to March 1951.

If anyone remembers him and wishes to contact him, they can get in
touch with him through me. He has had a hard time lately dealing with
what he experienced while he was there. Feels most of his Company did
not survive the war. I think it would do him good if an old friend from
there were to contact him.

Writing in hopes that you may have known my uncle William "Billy" B.
Martin of Talladega Co., Alabama during the Korean War, or may know of
an individual that likely knew him.

His I.D. # was 14316831 according to the Korean War Project Internet
site. He died as a result of enemy mortar fire according to surviving
family members. I know very little about him other than he enjoyed
playing the guitar. I occasionally wonder who his friends were during
the war, and where in Korea did he die?

Sincerely,
Steve Martin of Higdon, AL

I need his input as to who some of the other members of the platoon

I've got the Company Rosters for L & K Company. This guy was in L Co.
He had a round go thru his helmet above thehair line just weeks before.

LTC Garret, Bn Co made him turn in the helmet. (morale problem?)

As you know L Co lost 80 KIA and 120 wounded on March 17, l953 at Little

I have been seitting here at the computer and started writing my memoirs
from that time. I joined the 2nd Div about 23 or 24 Sep 51.

I was assigned for over a week to carry 4.2 mortar ammo up to the front
lines for the HEARTBREAK RIDGE offensive. I had come to CHUNCHON at the
railhead on the 23rd I believe. The Division attached about 25 of us
young infantrymen to be ammo carriers and we were assigned about 5 or 6
South Korean "choggie" boys to help.

We carried 3 rounds of 4.2 at 25lbs each on the trip up the mountain.
I finally joined G Company, 9th Inf Reg about the 2nd or 3rd of Oct 51.

We were on top the hill at HEARTBREAK RIDGE. The 9th had relieved the
23rd about the end of Sep and moved into their positions. The whole
Division was moved to reserve for replacements and resupply. When I
joined the company, it had a strength of 27 men we were told.

The group that came with me brought the strength up to just over 50 men.

In October while in reserve, we were brought up to full strength of
about 200 men. That is another story. If you are interested, I have
about 100 photos I took during Sep, Oct and Dec of 1951 plus several I
took of the company the next spring as I was being rotated back to the
states.
