Capt. Warner H. Harms Identified and Returned Home

Comments: For anyone who may have known my mother's husband, First Lieutenant Warner H. Harms, I'd like to share that he's finally at rest in California. After he was declared KIA he was promoted to the grade of Captain. In 1999 his remains were found near the Ch'onch'ong River. The U.S. Army did an impressive job excavating, identifying and finally burying Warner with full military honors. The family was furnished with a detailed report complete with photos of each step of the investigation.

My mother, newly-wed to Warner at the time he went MIA, worked her entire life to support efforts to find and return him and other servicemen lost in Korea. By the time it finally happened for Warner, she was suffering the effects of dementia so I'm not sure she absorbed the amazing fact that he was finally laid to rest at home. Still, it's a comfort to know that this can happen, even after fifty years.

If any of you knew Warner I would love to hear stories of your time with him.

Harvey Ambrose wrote on 2006-04-14 10:57:30.0

Comments: Hello,

I'm a collector and US Army veteran (Vietnam) and am seeking information about a helmet. It's a standard WWII M1 Helmet, except that it has a Korean War modification to adapt it to paratrooper use. The name inside is PFC Richard Clark, whose name shows up as being a member of 1st Platoon, Company G, 9th Inf. It has a unit insignia painted on the sides in white paint, with which I'm unfamiliar.

I'm asking for the following information: 1. Were any elements of the 9th Airborne? 2. Did any 9th unit insignias look like a martini glass with a crescent-moon base? 3. Does anyone know contact information for PFC Clark (I have his serial number and it begins with "RA-13-######)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Harvey

Comments: I was looking to see if anyone served with or knew my grandfather Bert O'Donnell while serving in Korea. He went to Korea around Feb. 1952 and was in the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Division, 3rd Batallion, 2nd Platoon, K Company. He was captured around March of 1953. Only a few guys from his company were taken with him. He was held in prison camp #5 though he did get moved to a few others. He was released with the last batch of soldiers 3 months after the war ended. He is still alive though his health is not great and he would just like to know if there is anyone out there that he knew back when. He was originally from Connecticut though he now lives in California. He is especially hoping to find an old buddy named Ed Deveccio (sketchy on the spelling of the last name). If anyone knew him we would live to here from you. My e-mail is included and I will give him the messages. Thank you

As long as you have the dd214, thats the discharge papers. There is a high school diploma available through your local board of education in conjunction with the DOD. I know its not much, but it meant alot to my dad. My dad won his sargents stripes running a mortar squad for the 9th infantry. He wasn't even a citzen at the time. He was an Irish citzen when he was drafted.

Comments: I arrived at Pusan in late July 1950, on what I understood was the first boatload of troops to reach there from Stateside, Fort Lewis, Washington, aboard a tub named the SULTAN. March 1951, I was among one of the first groups of whites to integrate the 3rd Battalion of the 9th, which until then had had all black enlisted men and just a few black officers. I served in the Mortar Platoon of "M" Company until June. Our company commander was Cpt. BLACKSTOCK, an older, gray-headed WW II retread, and our platoon leader was 1st Lt. John M. BEEBE, both whites. Among the brothers in the platoon that I especially remember was Cpl. Joe SPEED, who I think was from Cleveland, Ohio. A good boxer back at Fort Lewis, Joe was one of the best men I ever met. He had an infectious smile, a pleasant laidback manner, and fine sense of humor, all of which made the hard days of climbing near vertical mountains with 45 to 50 pounds of 81 mm mortar, pass faster. Other brothers were an older man, a Pfc STEWART, who had the flattest feet I ever saw; Sfc LOVELADY, NCOIC of FDC; and Pvt. Melvin HAMILTON. The whites were Cpl. Robert WEED, Pfc Leon E. GURLEY, and Pfc Richard "Dickie" TENANT. I would love to hear from any of these guys, or any one who knew (or knows) them.

Comments: My father Russell (Mickey) Park served in Korea. He has recently been sharing some of his experiences with his children and grandchildren. He has mentioned on several occassions that he had received a "blue book" which gave information on his unit etc. He had left the book with his mother and it was never returned to him when she passed - no one knows what happened to it.

I would very much like to locate a copy of this "blue book" for him.

Has anyone ever heard of such a book and if so know how I would get one for him?

. I know it would mean a great deal to him to have this. I have done extensive internet searches but have come up empty handed. Thank you for your time and assistance

Comments: My father caught the very tail end of the Korea War. I know very, very little about any details his service in Korea. Anyone who knows anything, I would deeply indebted for any illumination. He went in a Private, came away as a Sargent, and won two Bronze Stars. Thanks, Anita

Comments: I'm registering for my Dad, I was trying to find out more about the Korean war because Dad has just started talking to me about it, and I'm 40 yrs. old, He didn't like to talk about it when I was growing up but he tells me a little now, but I will show him this website I'm sure he would be glad to know that he hasn't been forgot. I'm not exactly sure of the dates but I think in 1948 he was in the 2end infantry div. 9th infantry regiment C Company, he was in 2 or 3 others as well but I will get him on here and he can look through to see if he can be of help to anyone. His 76th birthday is tomorrow and I was going to make him a plaque in recognition of his time served, I'm so thankful my Dad returned he is a wonderful person and father. Rhonda Reeves C Company

da has just started talking to me about it and I'm 40 yrs. old
