He commanded E Company, 2nd Bn, 9th Inf. Reg. He was a participant in the fighting in the Wonju area in January 1951. There's an injustice I would like to see rectified as he was denied recognition for his actions that he should have received but didn't. Because of his race. 13 JULY 1900 - TSIENTSTIN AND COL LISCUM |
| ROLFE L. HILLMAN III wrote on July 14, 2011 CITY AND STATE: ARLINGTON VA UNIT: N/A - HEAVY MORTAR COMPANY SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: Please excuse the delay: on 13 July 1900, COL Emerson H. Liscum, the 9th U.S. Infantry Regiment commander, was killed in action in Tsientsin, CHINA. COL Liscum and the 9th Infantry were attacking the old walled city of Tsientsin,CHINA as part of the Allied Relief Expedition sent to rescue the foreign legations and foreign nationals in Tsientsin and Peking who were under siege by the Chinese Boxers.. the "Boxer Rebellion." The 9th Infantry, a US Marine battalion, a Japanese division, and UK Royal Marines and a light infantry regiment attacked the walled city. During the assualt, COL Liscum was hit by a Chinese Mauser rifle round. As he lay dying in a muddy ditch, COL Liscum gave his final order "Keep at Em Boys,, Keep up the Fire!" Unfortunately, the Regiment and the other Allied forces were pinned down and weren't able to enter the walled city until the next day. The Regiment lost 92 casualties during the battle including COL Liscum. The 9th Infantry had been fighting Filipino insurgents on Luzon Island, PI when they were sent to China (their transport ship stopped at Nagasaki,Japan on the way;;) some irony. The Allied Forces fought their way to Peking and successfully captured Peking on 15 August with the 9th being the first US forces to enter the city. Liscum's "Keep up the Fire" is now the official regimental motto and the Chinese Imperial Dragon part of the regimental crest because of COL Liscum and the Regiment's fight in China. While the Regiment was in Peking as part of the occupation forces, it used a gift of silver from the Chinese government to make the 90-gallon "Liscum Bowl" regimental punch bowl and cups. The Regiment returned to the Philippines in 1901 to continue the fight against the Filipinos. On Sunday 28 September 1901, Company C was ambushed by Filiipino insurgents in Balangiga village on Samar Island. The company suffered 70 casualties including the company commanader, executive officer, surgeon, NCOs, and enlisted although they killed hundreds of the insurgents. The company later took the church bell that signaled the attack: The "Balangiga Bell" and its now in Korea. The 9th's 4th battalion found itself fighting guerillas again when it was sent to VietNam assigned to the 25th US Infantry Division (Tropic Lightning). So the 9th Infantry has a long proud history of fighting religious fanatics and guerrilla forces.. being continued today in Iraq with its Stryker Brigade. Keep up the Fire! GOD BLESS/SAVE THE TROOPS/FAMILIES Keywords: COL Liscum and "Keep up the Fire" |

9TH INFANTRY IN THE PHILIPPINES |
| ROLFE HILLMAN III wrote on April 19, 2011 CITY AND STATE: ARLINGTON VA UNIT: [HEAVY MORTAR COMPANY] SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: In March 1899, the 9th Regiment left Madison Barracks in Sacketts Harbor, NY to sail to the Philippine Islands (PI). The Regiment was ordered to the PI to help defeat the Filipino army which was fighting to block the US from taking control of the islands that we won after defeating the Spanish during the Spanish-American War. The Regiment was still recovering from the battle and disease casualties it suffered in Cuba while going up San Juan Hill. The Regiment arrived in Manila in April 1899 and was thrown into the battles against the Filipino army and then guerilla bands. The Regiment was engaged in actions on Luzon Island from 1899 until June 1900 when it sailed to China to fight in the Boxer Rebellion. The Regiment returned to the PI in May 1901 where it continued to fight Filipino guerillas. It suffered the Massacre of Balangiga on 28 September when "C" Company was ambushed on Sunday morning in Balangiga Village on Samar Island/PI. The company suffered more 70 casualties. The Regiment's "G" Company counter-attacked the guerillas the next day and burned down the village and retrieved the mangled corpses of their comrades. The troops took the "Balangiga Bell" which was a church bell used to signal the attack. The Bell is now in Korea with the 2nd ID. So the current 9th Infantry has a long history of fighting guerillas beginning with the Indian Campaigns, the Filipinos, the Viet Cong, and now AlQueda terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan. Keep up the Fire! GOD BLESS-SAVE THE TROOPS-FAMILIES Keywords: Pusan Perimeter, Chinese 1950 Christmas Offensive, Boxer Rebellion, San Juan Hill |

28 SEPTEMBER 1901 - BALANGIGA MASSACRE - |
| ROLFE L. HILLMAN III wrote on September 28, 2010 CITY AND STATE: ARLINGTON VA UNIT: FATHER: HEAVY MORTAR COMPANY SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: On Sunday 28 September 1901, the 9th Infantry Regiment's "C" Company, was ambushed by Filipino insurgents in the village of Balangiga/Samar- PI. Out of a company strength of 78, 74 were casualties including the company commander, executive officer, and surgeon. The Regiment's "G" company counter-attacked the next day and burned the village. The church bell used to signal the attack is now at Camp Casey, Korea as part of Regimental property/war memorials. "C" Company was sent to Balangiga to fight Filipino insurgents as part of the Army's counter-insurgency operations. The company had been in Peking, China as part of the occupation forces following the Boxer Rebellion when the 9th Inf Regt was part of the Allied Relief Expedition which rescued the foreign nationals trapped in Tsientsin and Peking ("55 Days at Peking"). It was at Tsientsin that the regimental commander, COL Emerson H. Liscum- a Civil War, Indian War, and Spanish-American War wounded veteran, was killed in action. It was Liscum who inspired the Regimental motto - "Keep up the Fire" as he lay dying in a ditch and issued his final order. And the Liscum Bowl the regimental sterling silver punch bowl is named after him. The regimental crest's imperial dragon and the nickname, "MANCHUs," also come from the fighting in China when the Regiment attacked Peking and later served there on occupation duty. Hope all have a good MANCHU day. Keep up the Fire! V/R-R RLH3 9th U.S. Infantry Regiment Association/MANCHUs Keywords: Massacre at Balangiga, Samar/Philippines Islands of "C" Company |

TANK COMPANY, 9TH IR, 2ID |
| DAN HEADLEE wrote on June 4, 2010 CITY AND STATE: FT WAYNE IN UNIT: HHB, 6/37 FA SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: ARMY VETERAN Comments: My Uncle, Donald E. Keller, served in Tank Co of the 9th in '51 and '52. He still can't talk about it. The towns listed above were in his letters to my Grandmother with the dates he was in the area, but I have misplaced them. He didn't write anything about combat because he didn't want to alarm his mother. Until finding this website I have found virtually nothing about the 9th's organic tanks or the action they saw. Can anyone fill in a few blanks? Thanks, Dan Keywords: Chorwon, Kumhwa, Yanggu, Inje, Kapyong, Chunchon, Hongchon, Wonju |
