999th Armored Field Artillery Battalion (155MM)

Note: the 92nd AFA, the 96th FAB and the 999th FAB all served in the Northeast sector of Korea under X Corps direction.

They supported the 65th Infantry Rgt among others. Primary weapons: 155 MM self-propelled and armored tracked artillery mounted upon tank hulls. The 999 substituted for the 3rd Division's 9th FAB while it supported the ROK's.See: Blair, Forgotten War, pg 408.

Comments: Looking for John Howard Pratt and Klingensmith. We were never billeted (tented) and the main 999 location, which was approx. 1 mile from the DMZ, but were stationed at A-160 which was located 14 miles below the DMZ. We were not know at the main camp.

Keywords: Based at A-160 along with 2 each L-19's from 7 other artillery units. Our two planes were 471 and 472. Served there Dec.1953 until 999 was re-located to Japan Spring of 1954. I was Sgt, John Howard Pratt from Texas was also an A & E as was Klingensmith (Smitty) Our two pilots were Lt. Thomas K. Fogler (deceased,1970) and Lt. Jack C. Branning, (deceased,in the late 70's.

Comments: My father served in the 999th as a forward observer for the big guns in Europe during WW2. According to the Army, records for the unit during that time were destroyed in a fire. Is there anyone out there a veteran of that unit? I would love to hear from you. My dad is now 87 and we were talking about his time in the service. It's a fascinating history.
