Comments: I knew Bob Afflerbach when we were both students at St. Mary's University, San Antonio,TX. We were both members of the ROTC there. I find no mention of Bob in these pages, but he was apparently killed 12 June 1953 (at Kumsong ?). He was declared MIA and presumed dead 13 June 1954. He was a member of Battery A, 987th Armored FA Bn. He was born in Runnels, TX. I think he should be remembered.

I served with the 17th FA Bn (8" Towed)(Persuaders) from Jul '52 to 3 Jul '53. We had an 8" SP How attached to us. I wasn't aware there was a battalion of 8" SP Howitzers in Korea. Would like more information about this unit.

Comments: the only injured members up until Jan 1952 were some replacements who had been poorly trained and shought they could "help" a round in with a sledge hammer.
Half of the unit equipment was lost during the Chinese Spring offensive in April 1951.
The charging Red Bull was with us from before we were activated in Canton, and dated back to my entrance in 1948 and before. Anyone who claims to have "invented" it is sadly mistaken.

Comments: My father, Col. Walter E. Gunster, was in Korea in 1953 and 1954. I am trying to help him recall places and names of his time in Korea. I found lots of slides of orphans that the battalion helped by allowing them to scavage their dump. The orphanage was at Inchon, north of Seoul on the road to Kumhwa. The photos of all of those children is heart rendering. There are also slides of "The Bunker" G2 and G3 Eighth Army, ROK Bank 987 Colors and Honor Guard, "RSOP" in Valley opposite 987 FA, Lt. Palmer in 987 L-19 buzzing OP at range Hwachon Reservoir, Office of Commanding
General Eighth Army, "Papa-San" hill, and one of the 987 Crest painted for a road sign.

I will visiting my father, who lives in Murfreesboro, TN, this summer for an extended stay and I will be trying to document his take on Korea at that time.

If anyone remembers my father or has any information that might be helpful to "jog" his failing memory I would most appreciate it!

Thank you in advance,

Katharine Gunster Laing

Comments: This is Bob's son Mike again still trying to find info on my dad, (Bob Riggins). I have called and talked to dad again to see if he remembered anything else since I last talked to him, he told me of some other units he could remember, I will list everything I know now and see if it will help ring some bells out there. Here goes: Dad's name: Robert (Bob) Cecil Riggins Service #:RA17-318-716 Last Rank; SFC Medals: 2 BRONZE STARS,PURPLE HEART,NATIONAL DEFENSE,KOREAN SERVICE,UN KOREAN SERVICE,POW,PUC,KPC W/ LETTER FROM SOUTH KOREAN PRESIDENT, CIB BADGE, BASIC JUMP WINGS. He also said he can remember serving with several other units such as: 2nd, 3rd, 7th, 40th, 45th Divisions 11th and 187th airborne RCT, 25th Recon (FORWARD OBSERVER) 2nd Battalion, H CO. Stateside: FT. HOOD, Texas, 4th Army 4th Armored division. Dad said he knows he fought for alot of different hills, (up and down) said he can remember being wounded in June or July of 1951, spent alot of time in the Kumsong area, carried the BAR and used it all the time. Please if anyone can remember him or has any photographs of him and his unit buddies, please contact me, I have a couple more items to get to complete his uniform (987th btn. crest, shoulder cord, and cap with correct piping) Also I am still in dire need of unit history and photos for an album I am putting together for him on his birthday May 12, 2002. I would be willing to pay for copies of photos or originals of dad, unit, guns, trucks, tanks, 105's, 155's, and what ever else you may have. I bought a 100 page photo album and have recieved only 4 photos, (THANK YOU, JOHN ENGLE) for the 2 that you sent to me. please help me get this accomplished by May 8th at the latest, that will give me time to get them mounted and ready to send to dad by the 12th. I would also like info on any patches that was worn on the khakis besides his stripes, would it be 8th Army on left shoulder and 9th corps on right shoulder? Dad don't remember, I am trying to do this without him getting wise to what I'm doing, he is already asking why all the questions, I just say I'm working on something. So once again if anyone can help contact me at my e-mail sight or you can mail me at my home address. PLEASE HELP GET A VETERAN'S SON GET THIS ACCOMPLISHED, I HAVE ALREADY SPENT A BUNDLE OF MONEY ON THE THINGS I HAVE PURCHASED. AND I AM WILLING TO DO IT AGAIN ON SOME PHOTO'S, UNIT HISTORY AND NEWSPAPER ARTICLES OR WHATEVER YOU MAY HAVE PERTAINING TO MY DAD. THANK YOU PLEASE HELP. Bob's oldest son Mike Riggins and family.

Comments: Hello, my name is Mike Riggins, Bob is my dad for whom I am very proud of, and so is his grandkids. My purpose of doing this on this sight is simple, I am helping my dad locate members of his unit, and I am trying to figure out all info on him, I have bought a period uniform for him and have bought several medals for a display case that I am having custom built for him, but am having problems trying to locate anyone who may have some old photographs or newspaper clippings to put in a album for him, so far I have recieved 6 but am in need of several more, they don't have to be of just my dad but of other people and units he was attached to, My purpose for doing this is that all of his original things he had was destroyed when my grandparents garage burned, he has wrote to St. Louis, Mo. to try and get his discharge papers, and they told him that they were lost due the fire they had there. I am trying to recieve enough things for the photo album to get it done in enough time so my family and I can present it to him on his birthday (may 12) this year. I know it is a big thing to ask for but I would like to make it a gift to my dad that would not be forgotten like they labeled the war. His last 6 or 7 years has been pretty rough, he has been in and out of the hospitals, having to go through some pretty bad surgeries, lost two of his yoes on his right foot. He lives alone by his self with nothing but time. I would like to hear from other veterans who served with him to try and get this done for dad, he doesn't know that I am doing it for him as I want it to be a big surprise for his birthday, So any help will be greatly appreciated, HELP make my dad feel like somebody again. You can contact me at my e-mail sight or can write or send info to my home at 832 S. Illinois St. Litchfield, Il. 62056 I would also like this opportunity to say THANK YOU to the veterns for my freedom that I sit and enjoy every day, I will forever be greatful, THANK YOU Bob's oldest son Mike

Service or Relationship: INTERESTED PERSON

Comments: I served with the 987th in C Btry as apart of FO
team from Dec 1950 (in Colorado training) to
July 1951 when I was rotated home.

I was an army reservist called up to fill an
empty slot in Btry C FO team.

Would like to correspond with others who
served in this time or with those after to learn
how the unit fared in the next phase of the war
.

I was wounded in the so called Second Battle
of Bull Run (vets will know) in April of 51 while
detached to a Marine Unit as part of FO team
but rejoined the 987th later in June.
