| GEORGE WIANT wrote on May 31, 2005 City and State: PRESCOTT AZ Unit: 987TH ARMD FA BN Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN Comments: the only injured members up until Jan 1952 were some replacements who had been poorly trained and shought they could "help" a round in with a sledge hammer. Half of the unit equipment was lost during the Chinese Spring offensive in April 1951. The charging Red Bull was with us from before we were activated in Canton, and dated back to my entrance in 1948 and before. Anyone who claims to have "invented" it is sadly mistaken. Keywords: |

I found lots of slides of orphans that the battalion helped by allowing them to scavage their dump. The orphanage was at Inchon, north of Seoul on the road to Kumhwa. The photos of all of those children is heart rendering. There are also slides of "The Bunker" G2 and G3 Eighth Army, ROK Bank 987 Colors and Honor Guard, "RSOP" in Valley opposite 987 FA, Lt. Palmer in 987 L-19 buzzing OP at range Hwachon Reservoir, Office of Commanding General Eighth Army, "Papa-San" hill, and one of the 987 Crest painted for a road sign. I will visiting my father, who lives in Murfreesboro, TN, this summer for an extended stay and I will be trying to document his take on Korea at that time. Please if anyone can remember him or has any photographs of him and his unit buddies, please contact me, I have a couple more items to get to complete his uniform (987th btn. crest, shoulder cord, and cap with correct piping) Also I am still in dire need of unit history and photos for an album I am putting together for him on his birthday May 12, 2002. I would be willing to pay for copies of photos or originals of dad, unit, guns, trucks, tanks, 105's, 155's, and what ever else you may have. I bought a 100 page photo album and have recieved only 4 photos, (THANK YOU, JOHN ENGLE) for the 2 that you sent to me. please help me get this accomplished by May 8th at the latest, that will give me time to get them mounted and ready to send to dad by the 12th. Dad don't remember, I am trying to do this without him getting wise to what I'm doing, he is already asking why all the questions, I just say I'm working on something. My purpose of doing this on this sight is simple, I am helping my dad locate members of his unit, and I am trying to figure out all info on him, I have bought a period uniform for him and have bought several medals for a display case that I am having custom built for him, but am having problems trying to locate anyone who may have some old photographs or newspaper clippings to put in a album for him, so far I have recieved 6 but am in need of several more, they don't have to be of just my dad but of other people and units he was attached to, My purpose for doing this is that all of his original things he had was destroyed when my grandparents garage burned, he has wrote to St. Louis, Mo. to try and get his discharge papers, and they told him that they were lost due the fire they had there. I am trying to recieve enough things for the photo album to get it done in enough time so my family and I can present it to him on his birthday (may 12) this year. I know it is a big thing to ask for but I would like to make it a gift to my dad that would not be forgotten like they labeled the war. His last 6 or 7 years has been pretty rough, he has been in and out of the hospitals, having to go through some pretty bad surgeries, lost two of his yoes on his right foot. He lives alone by his self with nothing but time. I would like to hear from other veterans who served with him to try and get this done for dad, he doesn't know that I am doing it for him as I want it to be a big surprise for his birthday, So any help will be greatly appreciated, HELP make my dad feel like somebody again. You can contact me at my e-mail sight or can write or send info to my home at 832 S.
