Comments: Looking for pictures of the barracks at South Camp Drake. The US Army turned these barracks into a junior high school some time after the Korean War armistice was signed. I attended it from 1965 until 1968 when my father PCS'ed back to the States.
Please help!!

Comments: I am looking for anyone who may have known my grandfather, Royce A. Drake. US Army 5th Cavalry. He sometimes went by Bill. I would also be interested in knowing more about the history of Camp Drake. It was named in honor of my grandfather shortly after he was killed in the war, October 21, 1944.
My grandfather also jumped with a horse named King Hi, with the Army Equestrian Team. Any information on that would also be appreciated.
Thanks.

Comments: We were stationed at the Finance Bldg in Tokyo in the fall of 1953 until our transfer to Camp Zama. Our unit worked in the Far East Hdqs bldg.(Little Pentagon). Camp Zama was a very nice Army base only about 30 miles from Tokyo and even closer to Yokahama. This was a plush assignment for Army duty. The interesting thing about our jobs back then was if someone asked you what you did and you said you were an IBM operator, the typical response was What's IBM ?

I have lost contact with; or they have passed on, of most members during this period. Does any one know what happened to John Baker, who accepted a commision in 1951, and was last heard from in the 17th FA in Korea?

Comments ...
My unit was the 97th Machine Records Unit, HDQ FECOM.
We supported the 5th Machine Records Unit,Mobile, with men and
equipment. I went through Camp Drake January, 1951.
Mr Truman extended my tour of duty for 6 months. Best of luck
on completing this project.
My MOS was 3400 (IBM machine Operrator) the forrunner of the
current desktop computer that I'm trying to type on now.
If I can be of any help on this project, Let me know.
Background on equipment

The old Machine Records Units (MRU) used punched card machines.
The mobile units used in Korea had the machines mounted in expandable
trailers. The trailers were full sized 18-wheeler type and were manually
expanded and folded up for travel. Later , a mortorized expansion
was developed.
Even when computers replaced the punched card machines, the size still
required vans. During the late 60's IBM 360's were used in very large,
but non-expandable vans. These units could close up and be on the road
within two hours. Data transmission was by microwave (this was
in the 60's--very advanced for that time).
Now each army unit has PCs, with much greater capabilites than the old
mainframes.
