LOOKING FOR INFO ON NEIL ROSSI SR. |
| DANIEL ROSSI wrote on March 26, 2011 CITY AND STATE: UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: I have been trying to learn more about my fathers military service. His name was Sgt. Neil Rossi. He passed away in 1980 while I was too young to have asked all the questions I would have liked. I was looking through some old photos, and found a picture of him while serving in the Korean war. He was standing next to an army jeep with a spare tire cover with the following wording: Charlie Battery 955 FA Red Legged Devil In the middle of the tire cover was what appears to be a picture of a horn with a 14 above the horn. I was wondering if you could give me a little history about who and what this unit was, and perhaps if they knew my father? If not, could you point me to someone or someplace that could. INCIDENT IN KOREA WHERE I WAS INJURED. TRYING TO OBTAIN MEDICAL RECORDS. |
| ANGELO ROSA wrote on September 18, 2003 CITY AND STATE: ALACHUA FL UNIT: 955TH FIELD ARTILLERY BATTALION SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: ARMY VETERAN - KOREA Comments: I need some help in trying to recreate an incident that occured during spring or summer of 1951. I became ill with shivers and a cold spine. I was admitted to M.A.S.H. just south of our position. When I was discharged, I met a fellow from Service Battery; a very short Irishman. I can't remember his name but I do know, he was inducted into the Army with me while we were with the 14th Regiment in Brooklyn. Togethr, we started to thumb rides north. We sneaked into a 2 1/2 ton truck cab in an morter outfit the first night, trying to get some sleep. We were detected, asked if we were hungry (had no food since the hospital), were fed and allowed to sleepo in the Sergeants tent. The next day, we walked again, thumbing a ride if we could. The first truck we saw, stopped and offered a ride. It was from Graves Registration. The truck had dead bodies. We said "no thanks". The next vehicle to stop was a 3/4 ton open truck occupied by 2 African Americans. We got on board. They took off very fast; we held on. We were going through the 1st Cavelry area and as you know, their area's were always heavily mined. Both sides of the roiad was marked off with white tape designating "mine fields". Suddenly, the driver groaned sayin, "OH, OH" ii fear. The first thing that came to my mind was that there was something wrong with the steering and he could not control the truck. As you know, the roads were called wash board roads. After his "OH OH", everything went black. The next thing I know. I was trying to get up and saw the driver with his hand bent back so far that I could see inside his wrist. He also had a bloody head as we did and the other passenger. We were in the mine field on the right side of the road. Where the ambulance came from, who called for it is unknown to me. The next thing I know, I was being driven back to the same M.A.S.H. hospital that we left the previous day. From there, I was shipped to Seoul and a hospital for a few days. How I got back to my outfit after being discharged is unknown. I advised medics that I believed something happened to truck but ever since I returned home, I have had my doubts. Everything is a blank after hearing the "OH OH" of the driver. Does anyone remember this incident. My buddy, the Irishman was from Brooklyn. Do not remember outfit the 2 African Americans belonged to or the name of the M.A.S.H. hospital. ANYONE WITH INFO, PLEASE CALL, E Mail or write me. P.S. Anyone from Service Battery, 955th F.A. BN. Lets hear from you. Had a good friend in San Pedro California that I spoke to on the phone many times but then had a heart attack ands other medical issues and have since lost contact.
