Comments: Dear listener/reader/person the other end! I came across your website by accident as I was researching my past (that bit which is still legal) for my grandchildren's sake and I ended up down your memory lane! Since my diving days in the British Royal Navy it is rare that I step into the unknown - more so at my age - but do so now - rather gingerly and curiously....I was off/on the above misspelt island Paengnyong-Do - for about 6 months at end of 1952 early '53 . My 'mother ship' H.M.S. Opossum was lazily swanning around acting as bombardment ship, anti-aircraft defence - general maid-of-all work and spent many cold months patrolling and checking out anything 'suspicious' - unexpected/unwanted particularly submarines, mines or downed pilots. Hence the investigation for a rescued Catalina PBY pilot Lt. Muzio and crew. Does any of this reminiscing ring bells of interest? If so do come back with questions - I just love a mystery. Kind regard to all you ex-US servicemen. Peter Shore ex-Clearance Diver, Royal Navy 1948-1958.

Comments: Thanks to the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice, I discovered this website through AOL today. I've had the opportunity, both in the early 80's and again over the last few years, to make several business trips to South Korea, in one year (2001) spending some 10 trips and 70 days in Korea. It is an amazing country, hardly recognizable from the dirt roads and rice paddies of '52 and '53. When I pass the airfield in Suwon, I can't help remembering constructing the runway at K-13 and the hot summer days and the freezing cold winters, and the F-86's and F-80's taking off and returning from their sorties up north. If there is anyone out there who remembers me, please contact me.

Comments: I joined the 931st Engineer Group (Air Force Support) at Fort Sam Houston, Texas in 1961. Later the designation Air Force Support was dropped and the unit had a training mission under Fourth Army. I was Company Commander, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, in 1962 when the unit was deactivated. From a TO&E of over 100 men, the unit shank to two men, my supply sergeant and me. After the last of the unit equipment was turned in, and the unit banners and awards (mostly from the Korean War) were boxed and shipped to an Army warehouse, my supply sergeant received orders. I was the last member of the unit. After clearing the final paperwork to deactivate the unit, I transferred to Headquarters, Fourth Army.

Comments: My name is Thomas Hong who was a Korean orphan, cleaning cook's Quonset hut as a houseboy in the 608th ACWS 502nd TC, at the Paengyong-Do and also kitchen helper in the mess hall from 1953 to 1956.
I was 12 years old in 1953 and all member of the cooks and mess hall staffs were very kind and treated me very well. They call me "Mickey" and I was a little cute boy in the compound.
I came from North Korea in 1951 through the islands, Suk-Do, Cho-Do and Paengyong-Do. During the war, I have lost my parent, brothers and sisters. I was a dirty and hugry little orphan wondering around for foods. I found a job as a shoeshine boy first for cooks' unit of squadron.
These cooks saved my life and made me what I am now. Especially on cook, who is an Italian decedent, called Joe G... treated me very well as his little brother. I cannot remember his last name but he said to me he was a boxer and have a little sister in Buffalo area or North-Eastern States. He was about 22 to 25 years old.
I left the island in 1956 for Seoul and studied myself through the university and graduated as an engineer. I have worked at U.S. Embassy in Seoul and also served 8th U.S. Army Headquarters as a KATUSA (Korean Army to U.S. ARMY) for 3 years.
Currently I am living in Toronto, Canada as a Canadian citizen since 1975. Every time the Christmas is coming near, the memories of boyhood of Paengyong-Do is always in my mind and wishing to find and meet the old friends. I guss they are old now since I am 61 years old now.
I hope one day I will some of them and share the memories and have chance to thank them sincerely.
If any body still remember me as "Mickey" the houseboy for cooks unit, I would like to hearing from you. You could contact me by e-mail or phone at 416-693-5538.
Look forward to hearing from you very soon.

Comments: I was originnally assigned as company clerk, but later became the mail clerk. Captain Senders was CO and later promoted. I well remember having guard duty every third night. Food wasn't too bad though. I remember Kenny Swanson was the baker (in civilian life too) and he could really do a fine job with yeast rolls. Peace talks were in process during my later tour, and I saw some of the first American prisoners come into K-16. Very few were able to walk.

Comments: Arrived in Yokohama,Japan In March 1952 aboard the Gen JC Breckinridge, Boarded a train to Iwokuni Air Base, then was airlifted aboard a C-46 to K-13 Suwon,Korea, my new home with the 931st. Assigned as a heavy equipment mechanic in the motor pool, which at that time was under the direction of Motor Sgt.Carney. Within a short time the 931st was assigned new orders and moved to Yong Dung Po which was closer to K-14 & K-16. After the move, Sgt.Carney was rotated and John Tuley was promoted to Motor Sgt. Due to his time for rotation coming up within a short time, I then was made Motor Sgt. which position I held until my rotation in March 1953.

My father, Eugene H. Seidling, served in Korea from Jul 50 to Dec 51.
He was assigned to the 1st Cav/70th Hvy Tank Bn and also to the 931st
Eng Bn/Aviation Group/Hq & Services Co (one of the 1st racially
integrated units - he was the 1st Sgt).
I believe the 931st Eng Bn fell under the SCARWAF units. Anyone who
served in either of these outfits, please reply.
Thanks.
