William McSharry

Comments: On August 23rd 2009 William McSharry passed away. He served in Korea with D Company, 8th combat Engineers First Cavalry Division. In early September 1950, He was awarded a purple Heart for wounds suffered during the Battle of the "Walled City of Kasan". His unit took heavy casualties when it was converted to a rifle Company to defend the strategic hill upon which the ancient walls stood. His good friend Melvin Brown was awarded the Congessional Medal of Honor during the same battle. William McSharry received three Bronze Service Stars while in Korea during 1950 and a portion of 1951.

Comments: Looking for the guy (member of the 8th Engineer Battallion) who drove through a Chinese Patrol in his crane. Did not get his name at the time.

This happened on a Sunday afternoon, we had just picked up a fuel tank at a local orphanage, and lagged behind the rest of the crew.

Comments: Looking for any one who might have information on my grandfather, Raymond Marchek. I have several photos with insignia similar to that of the 8th Army. Harold D. Day K.I.A. 30 Mar. 1951 Chunchon

Comments: I am looking for those kin to Harold D. Day, Sgt. Day, who was killed at Chunchon on 30 March 1951. My uncle knew a Sgt. Day who was killed. Said Sgt. Day was from Virginia and his daddy was a preacher.

My Uncle said "I saw Sgt. Day get blown up right in front of me. He stepped on a mine, gooks had planted a mortar, nose side up, on the road and had put a board on top top so it wouldn't be seen." Sgt. Day stepped on it and was killed. My uncle, Carl Bowers, said he really liked Sgt.Day, he was a real nice guy.

Have seen a memorial posting by Terence Day for Harold D. Day, 1st Cavalry, 8th Engineers, C Company. Have found a Harold D. Day from Tazewell, Virginia, who was killed on 30 Mar. 1951.

Terence Day listed his own residence as being Raleigh, NC. Would like to know if these two DAYS are the same. Would like to hear from Terence Day and let him know of this information about his uncle, Harold Day, if they are one in the same.

Comments: Hoping to find more information or friends who may have served with my uncle, Carl Edward Bowers. Enlisted at the age of fifteen in Knoxville, Tenn. He joined the 82nd Airborne first. Started off hunting "Huks" or guerillas in the Phillipines. Swam in McArthur's pool. He went to Japan and joined up with the First Cavalry Division, 8th Engineers, C Company. He said that he lived on Mt. Fuji and retrieved the bodies of servicemen killed in plane crashes.

Was wounded by a mortar round, was stabbed in the arm while in his foxhole, and was shot in the knee. Was at the Chosen Resevoir. Recalls a small airplane flying over (the resevoir) and someone on a loud speaker in the plane telling them it was every man for himself. Saw a Korean blow himself up in an attempt to disable a tank, which he did. Blew the tread off. Said when they were marching rice paddies would "come alive" with the Chinese, who would be hiding underwater, breathing through reeds. The Chinese would blow horns to "unnerve" them. Would blow a horn over here and then over there, then nothing....silence. The Chinese would attack in waves. The Chinese in front wave would be armed, but not the second wave. They would pick up the weapons of those who would be mowed down.

Uncle Carl said he landed at Tai Bu Dong(sp) behind the Chinese and on to Kay Sohn(sp) Got hit hard at Tai Gu(sp) He was at the massacre at Guna-Re(sp.

Related that their were refugees as far as you could see coming out of North Korea. They kept getting hit because the Chinese would mix in and dress like the Korean civilians. Said they stopped and old woman with a cow, which was loaded with bags. They searched the bags and found machine guns hidden under the bags.

He said that he helped storm a hill. Someone with a "burp gun" was firing on them. A sniper he said. He kept hearing "pops", hit the deck and found that the pops were where bullets had been hitting his trench coat. Said the coat was full of holes and they knew when that gun "burped" you'd have 50-60 rounds coming at you. Uncle Carl said they "got the sucker" who was firing at them.

When asked about a scar on his arm, Uncle Carl said one of the enemy jumped into a foxhole with him and cut his arm. I asked him what became of the enemy and he said "I choked the bastard." He said "They buried the gook later."

Uncle Carl related how he was clearing mines once, someone yelled "medic", saw a guy go down. Pulled the guy into a ditch and looked around and realized that they were all alone. Couldn't get the guy out by himself because everyone had left. A U.S. tank came along and straddled the ditch. He thought the tank was going to put them out of their misery. The tank rolled over them and he was able to put the wounded man and himself into a hatch on the underside of the tank.

Landed at Puson, was unloading rations, went over the cargo nets, into the landing crafts. He heard someone yelling, didn't pay attention to it. Finally someone yelled "Carl Bowers." It was Joe Carver from Knoxville. A moment later he saw Carver get hit. Said that Carver received a "million dollar wound" and was sent home.

Uncle Carl was at Heartbreak Ridge and saw about thirty G.I.'s with their hands and feet tied with barbed wire, their heads were bashed in. Said he "borrowed" an artillery piece once. Stated they didn't really know how to use it, but aimed at a curve on a mountain road and proceeded to knock out the front and rear Russian-made tanks and then took care of the rest in the middle. Took a Russian-made pistol as a souvenir, but had to give it up in Japan. Was told to blow a train bridge after the last train out of North Korea came through. Said they waited and waited and was then told to get their asses out of there. They blew the bridge with the pieces nearly landing on them.

He was shot through the knee, saying the bullet had entered above the knee and came out below the knee. Said that his Purple Heart was thrown on the litter as he was being carried away, but couldn't find out where it had gone. Stated that he was sent to Osaka, Japan to recover and then sent back to Korea. Also mentioned that he had received the Silver Star. I told Uncle Carl that our great great grandfather, Alexander Black of the 16th Georgia Infantry, (Confederate) had been shot in the knee at The Battle of The Wilderness. He replied saying "They must not like our knees."

Uncle Carl Bowers is living in Florida now and I hope this will help in gaining him some recognition for his service in Korea. He cannot get his medals for some reason and surely deserves them.

Comments: C Company of the 70th was retreating after dark through the 5th Cav area. An engineer tank was with them but broke down and was abandoned on Hwy #1. An engineer with a broken leg was left with the tank. I brought him out. I would like to know his name. He was probably evacuated to the States.

8th Engineers, Cp. Drake, Japan

Comments: I was stationed at Camp Tokorozawa, just down the road from Co Drake. Shortly after I arrived in Japan from a 1948 tour in Korea I visited a home town bubby with the 8th Engrs. his nane was Carl Gilbert from Whtman, MA., in mid June he was sent back to the ZI and given a forced discharge.

He went into the service at age 16, he was a gung ho guy, if any one remembers him please let me know. We had several guys in the 43rd that came from the 8th Engrs. in late 1948. Thanking you in advance. Clyde.

Comments: I am trying to find information regarding Merritt Pratt Sr. of Wisconsin. I am putting together a memoir for my father and would like any information you could provide. He was killed in action Nov. 2nd 1950, North Korea.

Comments: I took basic(or It took me) Jan. to may 1951. Fort Knox Ky. Sailed for Japan in May 1951, with Tankers MOS. Attended Medical School July 1951 at Osaka Japan. Then to Korea In Aug 1951 and the 8th Eng. As Medic with the First Platoon,Co."B". went to Japan In Dec.51 and back to Korea In Aug 52 to Nov.%2 Home Dec 52. Want to locate Buddies from old Unit

Comments: I'm a member of VFW Post 2913, here in Patchogue, New York. I'm the chairman of the 50th Anniversary of the Korean War, and would apprceate any information on the War or activities other posts are doing.

Comments: I am the 1SG of the present day A Co, 8th Engineer Battalion. I feel it is important that my soldiers know what thier history is and would like a biography on any one that has served in this Unit over the years...pictures (now or then) would be nice to. Seeking Info on Sgt. Ralph Fryman

Comments: My father served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1961. I have a record for almost each year of service except his 9 1/2 months in Korea between July 1950 and June 1951.

He would never talk to me about Korea. Just recently, my uncle told me he served with the 8th Engineer Combat Battalion. He didn't know which company. He said my father was at the beginning of the North Korean offensive, the defense of the Pusan Perimeter, the counter offensive northward to the Yalu River near China. He said my father was at Chosin Reservoir where most of his unit was wiped out. This would probably be in the November/December 1950 period shortly after the Chinese communist intervention.

I don't know how much of the above is accurate. If anyone served with my father, I would very much like to hear from you.

1st Lt. Harold G. Parris

Comments: My uncle, 1st Lt. Harold G. Parris, was killed on 11/6/50 by a firing squad after being captured.

It was reported that he was tortured, but gave no information. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and Camp Parris was named in his memory.

We have never been able to obtain information about Camp Parris - located in Korea. We are interested in any information about Camp Parris or anyone who may have known Harold - 8th ART BN (105mm) 25th Infantry Division.

My, Paul O. Parris (Navy) and another brother John C. Parris (Army) served in the Korean War at the same time as Uncle Harold.

Comments: Worked on Imjin River and Bloody Baldy, was roaming heavy equiptment mechanic.

When Ist Cav was pulled out, I was one of the few whom had to remain in Korea and was assigned to the 45th Infantry Division. The only one out of our outfit that remained with me was Claude Lanham, from Elizebethtowne Ill.

Have many great storys to share, With anybody or everbody.
