Comments: I am trying to help my father find someone that might remember him from the war. He was started out in the war in the 7th Cavalry, and ended serving with the 8th Cavalry and was injured in the war on June 11, 1951. He was held as a POW/MIA, but not held in an actual camp, and is trying to prove this. His family also received a telegram that said that he was KIA. Since all of his military records were burned, he is trying to connect with anyone that would remember him. When he was taken POW in the area of Shie-by-ni (SP?) on July 28th 1951, and was held captive with several members of the 7th Cav.

I would be very grateful for any information regarding how incoming mail was received, and how often correspondence was permitted to be sent.
I know that both Dove airletters and postcards were provided to POW's, but would welcome info, scans or photocopies to help me compile an accurate record of facilities in the different camps.

I like to check I I'm crazy or did I really reïncarnate after I died in Korea. Please send me some information about him. I was shot nearly in half. I saw also a green kitchen and a small wooden table with four chairs around it. The chair had dark blue pillows to sit on. I think that the mother in law of John lived with them.
Sorry for my bad english. I'm dutch and did my best to be as clear as I can.
Hope to find someone who can give me any information about John McKenzie.

If anyone still alive knew him or served with him I would like to hear from you.
I know you men went through hell as my father was wounded several times and had his teeth knocked out by the butt of a chinese rifle (the chinese got knifed for his efforts) he had had a lot of shrapnel in him still when he died in 1995. My dad was a WWII Veteran of the Navy in the Pacific as well. (Destroyer)
I know he carried the BAR and was involved in H2H as were all of those brave men.
Please email me if you have any greater details of which battles and what happened.
I am a disabled veteran as well and I would like to be able to tell my family what happened. My dad did not talk much about what occurred but being a veteran myself and taking one look at him gave anyone a good idea of what the hell he must have gone through.
Thank you in advance and thanks to all the men who served lived and died in that God forsaken shit hole.

On some paperwork I have it says he was captured at 300. I don't know what this means. He was held for 133 weeks. He was released 08/11/1953. I do have alot of photos from Korea, servicemen, barracks, and numerous other things.I also have some letters that he wrote his parents while he was in the service.I will read these and see if there is any information that will help someone find a missing GI.
Thank you

He has been attempting to get compensation for cold injury for several years but cannot prove it because his records were destroyed in the St Louis fire. His unit was overrun by the Chinese on Nov. 2nd 1950. It would be helpful if he could obtain a roster or morning reports or any info. to help prove that he was there. His serial No. was RA 15273238. He was wounded in action on July 31 1950 and returned to duty. He has a definite case of frostbite and should qualify for 100% disability.

Comments: After over 56 years, my Uncle, Sgt Frank Bunchuk, is coming home, as his remains have been identified, thanks to all those involved in finding and identifying remains from the Korean War, located in North Korea. This was made possible through DNA obtained from my mother (his sister) and I through the DNA Identification Program. Although from Orleans/Niagara Counties in New York State, the family has chosen burial at Arlington National Cemetery, which will take place on 09 August 2007. Thank you to everyone involved in bringing closure to our family and allowing us to BRING UNCLE FRANKIE HOME. This experience has shown us that they truly ARE NOT FORGOTTEN!
Again, THANK YOU, Jeanette Welsh

Comments: Hi, and a sincere Thank You for all who have served and protected our country.
I am looking for info on my great-uncle Henry R. Hopkins born in GA. I knew him when I was a child. He wore a brace on his leg.
On his headstone it has SP5 Army, Korean & Vietnam. I have a newpaper obit that includes the following: He was buried with full military honors and a 21 gun salute from Fort McPherson. Service men from Fort McPherson served as pallbearers. American Legion members acted as honorary pallbearers. A member of the American Legion, Hopkins received many awards for his military service. In addition, he was a recipient of the Silver Star, several Purple Hearts with Stars and the Bronze Medal.
My dad says, "Uncle Henry was at HeartBreak Ridge."

Comments: I have several photo's but do not remember anyone's names. Sarg. or Corporal Mijire, PFC Price or Rice could be the name of two.
I was there when a guy was doing guard duty, and someone wouldn't stop when ask, and he was shot in the stomach. The 1st Sarg. was a short Irish red-headed man and built his own hooch up on the hill close to the supply building with a rock fireplace in it. I also spent a few weeks on the DMZ patroling with the 9th Cav. Also was there when a young fellow fell in love with a village girl in Changpari, and jump off the bridge and drowned. I went to Fort Gordon Georgia as a weapons instructor and trained troops for Vietnam. I was a Sargent then.

Comments: John is a distant relative of mine. He was killed in Korea and was highlighted in the November 1951 issue of Redbook Magazine. He was to be buried at the Souix City Iowa cemetary, but as his casket was being lowered into his plot, the sheriff stopped the funeral because John was an Indian and at the time the cemetary was "white only". His body was returned to the funeral home and 2 weeks later, President Truman personally intervened and JOhn was buried in Arlington National Cemetary.
Am curious to hear about him and circumstances surrounding his death.
His "story" is quite sketchy.

He carried a BAR into battle and also offered the Lord's comfort to his fellow companions. I don't have very much more, except that I still miss him as much as when the two servicemen came to our home to notify our mother of his passing. God bless everyone!

Comments: Does anyone remember seeing a tall, skinny kid, still in his teens, dirty and needing a shave. He was the last of his co. after a battle. It would have been 1950 probably. He would be seen for a while and then he'd leave and go "scouting" the front lines, never really belonging anywhere until he was wounded and ended up at a mash unit and help drive an ambulance until he was sent home in 1951. I think it was in the Pusan area. He was with the 1st cav. div.- 8th cav. reg. at the time. Thank you

Does not appear on the "Johnnie Johnson List" or on the "Missing in Action - Captivity" report compiled from returning POWs. The Personnel Missing Korea List cites PVT Smith as Killed in Action - body not recovered. A Fifth Cavalry patrol on November 19, 1950, recovered one of his dog tags 15 kilometers southeast of the 3rd Battalion perimeter from a village jail, possibly carried there by U.S. prisoners taken in the battle of Unsan. John's remains have not been found to date.

This is to aid in the identification of remains recovered from that area when access is granted by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK or North Korea). I know that time is running short on those veterans who might have what they consider unimportant information that might be critical in identifying a soldier and bringing closure to his family.

Comments: After reading the History of the Battle of UNSON I can understand the difficulty in obtaining information. The actions taken that day make me greave even today but at the same time very very proud to be an AMERICAN!! I have gotten some information from my Mother re: Cpl. Roger Weaver, my Uncle. During retreating actions and under heavy bombardment my Uncle went missing. The army sent a telegram stating only that he was missing and was later declared "Dead while missing". We have never received any official information beyond that. My Mother and her sisters have each donated DNA to the I. D. Lab in hopes of the remains being found for repatriation or evidence to support his death. The story we received from "Fred Keyes" a buddy and hometown resident who was in the same action and was later captured and repatriated is as follows. While crossing the "River, the Company Commander or Platoon leader "Capt. ?" took a hit. My Uncle went back to aid and retrieve the Capt. Upon reaching him, a shell hit and neither was seen or heard from again. My questions deal with those events. If anyone remembers this, please let me know. Which River? he Nammyon? or the Samfon? Was the crossing at a bridge or was it a ford? About where?. Might anyone remember the Capt.'s name? I also understand the unit was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation, The ROK Presidential Unit Citation, and The Greek Gold Medal of Bravery. for the actions of the 2nd of NOV 1950. My Uncle did not receive these medals. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the ROK Service Medal and the UN Service Medal. Can anyone tell me if he would be entitled to these? Thank you to all the men who fought in that battle. Your Courage and fortitude in the face of such overwhelming odds is to be heralded.

Steve Walsh wrote on 2002-11-28 11:52:50.0
Comments: I am looking for any info on Sergeant James Joseph Walsh 1st Cav. Div. He was from the Bronx, Kings Co. NY. He was declared missing Nov. 2 1950. Officially declared dead Dec. 31, 1953. We believe that his position was over run and the body was never recovered in North Korea. We know he was a "light weapons assault infantryman.' His number was RA12319466.
He was my father's first cousin. My father is still alive. (My father served in the Royal Navy on an aircraft carrier during this same time period.) We know nothing else about him other than what this web site KoreanWar.org has provided.
We sent off to the Army Service Record Office in St. Louis, Mo. in July this year and to date have not heard back.
I am the family historian. This is a gray area in our past that we would like to find out more about. Any scrap would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Steve Walsh

Comments: Trying to locate family member of Charles Ca storena to give them his rosary. Spent the night of 9 Oct 51 together, and he gave me his rosary the next morning minutes before he was killed. Would like to find his family to give them this special keepsake. Also would like to find the individual that was wounded on 10 Oct 51 (right upper leg shattered) and I litterly dragged him to safety, then got assistance to get him to aid station. Do not know his name, but he was a former paratrooper, 2nd platoon, King Co. blond curly hair, stocky built, approx. 5' 10", 170-180 Lbs. Just wanted to know if he made it okay.
Would like to hear from anyone with King Co. 3rd Bn, 8th Reg, 1st Cav Div during month of October 1951.

Comments: There is a reprint available at http://turneronline.com of the 1st cavalry division korea 1950-1952 book. I was told that the original book was available for sale to soldiers when they were leaving Korea, at that time. The back of the book has a full-looking roster (Im not an expert) breaking groups down as far as what company they were in. I can't say how perfect the listing is, because there were some names I saw on this message board that I thought i might find listed in the books roster, but I couldnt find them. My dad's name was listed, and his friends were too. It also has the most detailed history of the first cavalry during that time that I have found (but again, I'm no expert). Maybe people would want to see if its in the library first?
here is a direct link to the page.
http://turneronline.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=tpc&Product_Code=%2FArmy%2FCavalry%2F1cav-Korea.html
if the link doesnt work just look around the website it was easy to find.
I dont work for this company; if its bad for me to post this link, sorry, just somebody email me and Ill try and take this message down i guess.

Comments: Hi, My dad was in K Co, 8th Regt, 3rd BN, 1st Cav Div during Korean War period, Summer 1951-1953. He landed in Korea around October, and I think he was around the Jamestown Line area, but I am not sure. A friend of my dads said that they remained in the same foxhole on the same hill for Oct-Dec, and people went out for recon every nine days. I am trying to find out which hill that was, what action their hill saw, and what action they would have been able to see around them. Their hill was attacked (in terms of people trying to climb up it) only once, towards the end of december. They could see airplanes "scraping" enemy hills. If anyone was in K company and might know more of what was going on over there, please contact me. Thanks.
