He was killed in Korea and was highlighted in the November 1951 issue of Redbook Magazine. He was to be buried at the Souix City Iowa cemetary, but as his casket was being lowered into his plot, the sheriff stopped the funeral because John was an Indian and at the time the cemetary was "white only". His body was returned to the funeral home and 2 weeks later, President Truman personally intervened and JOhn was buried in Arlington National Cemetary. He was a gentle soul put on this earth to be a friend of all. He carried a BAR into battle and also offered the Lord's comfort to his fellow companions.
