Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN Comments: I served as commander of the 2nd Platoon of the 86th Eng'r. Slt. Co. from May of 1952 until the unit was converted to Artillery in the winter of 1952-1953. The Platoon Sgt. was a Corporal (Shannon) The next highest rank was a PFC. Promations were hard to come by. We moved around a bit covering, in turn, the area around Kumwha and Chorwon. After the switch to Artillery, I become Commo officer of the 74th Eng'r. Comb. Bn. Finished my tour in Korea in June of 1953. Would like to hear from anyone who served in the 86th during that period. Keywords: Korea, Searchlight, Chorwon, Kumwha

EVANS wrote on February 17, 2003 City and State: ALEXANDRIA VA Unit: 86TH FIELD ARTILLERY BATTERY (SEARCHLIGHT) Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN - KOREA Comments: I was the last Commanding Officer of the 86th Field Artillery Battery (Searchlight), part of IX Corps Artillery. The unit was deactivated in the fall of 1954 and was located in the vicinity of Kumwha in the Chorwon valley. I was a First Lieutenant when the Battery was deactivated. Our location was below the Iron Triangle between Chorwan and Kumhwa near a shelled out town of Tae-de-gul. Interested in the whereabouts and status of veterans and would like to contact any veterans to exchange views and recollections. The 36th Engineer Group was located alongside Route 22 east of MSR-3 near Tae-de-gul. There was also a small stream nearby also not far from 44th MASH and a water reservoir. Our working quarters were bunkers in a small hill. Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN - KOREA Comments: While doing some research (OK, my memory isn't what it used to be) on the Korean War for an online scrapbook I'm putting together for my kids and grandkids, I ran across the mention of the searchlights used during the Korean War. I remember those lights; you used to shine them on a Chinese hill in our sector at the end of what we called "Happy Valley". It was truly amazing as you lit up that hill better than daylight while forcing the Chinese to squint back into your searchlights. The pictures are scans of some personal slides I took while in Korea in 1952 and 1953.
