IMJIN RIVER BRIDGES |
| ROBERT MORTON wrote on March 20, 2010 CITY AND STATE: CASCADE ID UNIT: 2ND ENGINEERING CONSTRUCTION GROUP SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: ARMY VETERAN Comments: Was stationed in Korea from April 1951 to November 1952. Was in the 2nd Engineering Construction Group stationed in Yongdongpo Korea. The 84th Battalinon was one of our construction battalions. I was a surveyor, one of a group of about 6, who spent most of our time camped out on the south rim of the Imjin River doing preliminary surveying for the design and construction of bridges across the Imjin. The 84th was stationed in the area also doing the construction work. My last project was doing the preliminary survey for the X-Ray bridge site. I still have a copy of the original contour map we made. This job was done in November 1952, just before my tour was over. Keywords: |

| ALFONSO (AL) DE LEO JR. wrote on October 28, 2001 CITY AND STATE: HAVERTOWN PA UNIT: 84 TH ECB, HDQTS CO - CO B SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: ARMY VETERAN - KOREA Comments: Events I remember: The 3 day payroll dist trips to pay TDY Pers and 900 Koreans spread from Munsan, Yonchon, Yong Dong Po, Seoul and back. Especially when a $10,000 payroll bag almost floated away when our jeep was swamped in 5 ft of water. The difficult 5 day trip to Pusan to find and bring bacck heavy duty jacks necessary for the launching and setting of the connecting steel span of Freedom Gate Bridge. The Bn Exec getting pissed when I painted Baby Doll on my jeep. The 23 rd birthday party my B Co guys gave me and the cracked rib that resulted. The burning of TNT and C-4 to keep warm. The case of VO I always had under my bunk and drinking warm beer at Brit's NCO Mess. I remember most of all "my" guys, jeep drivers- Hansen, Len Silpie(?) and O'Dell (Digger), the guys I had at Engr Tng and Specialist School at Ft L Wood, who were my unpaid demo experts. Sgt Scruggs, Pop, Specs Mattern, to mention a few, and our Koreans- Sake Joe, Baby Face and the others. Lt Geo Bucher (New Zealander), WO Cooley and myself trading GI steak for English Gin. I would like to hear from anyone else who also remembers me and the good and bad times we had that year. I have pictures of a lot of the guys and remember some names too so, anyone interested please contact me. Ex Lt Al De Leo. Keywords: First assigned to Hdqts Co as Asst Opns Officer, Opns Officer, Bn Labor Officer (900 Korean pers) and Class A pay agent (Hdqts pers) on TDY with A,B and C Cos. Was reassigned to Co B as PLT Ldr at Whitefront and "Old Teal" during flood protection work. Was Section Ldr for the start of "New Teal" Bridge construction after floods. |

I served in the outfit in Korea from the summer of 1951 through the summer of 1952. A couple of nicknames I remember are "Moose" from Cicero, IL; "Benny Binsack", "Pete" Peterson. We were all involved in the building of the Teal Bridge and the Freedom Gate Bridge as well as a lot of other stuff. Hello to all who read this and best wishes.
