Comments:

Keywords: I am looking for information regarding to my dad, Robert A. Penter. He gave me some notes years ago and now his memory has gone and I am trying to gather what ever I can for his wife so she can look into VA benifits for his nursing care. Apparently there was a fire in the 70's that destroyed many of the records from that time period. This is the limited information I got from him. His name is Robert A. Penter discharged as 1st Lieutenant in 1953 5th Airforce-HQ Ground Safety Officer I think the base was K-5 (His notes say 12 miles south of Seoul) 1952-53 He was a coach for the base football team. Apparently he coached a game against Ted Williams' base sometime during that period. Also told stories of hunting fowl during off time. Any information would help. Thanks Mike Penter

Comments: My step-motherand her daughterrs destroyed all my father's things, including his military pictures. He served from 1939 until he was injured in 1951. If anyone has a group photo and would make a copy, I would be grateful. My father actually picked my husband, who served in the Air Force 23 years. Three of my four sons have served, two in both the Marines and the Army, one retired from the Army and one is an active-duty Colonel. My daughter was a Captain in the AFROTC but married her sophomore year. My fouth son is a chronic asthmatic and was denied by all five branches (that includes the Coast Guard). My father was at Ft. Sam when he and my mother met. He served at Santa Monica, Ft. Bragg, Hot Springs, and Ft Benning state-side and fought in Africa, Italy, and Korea. I was nine-years-old when he left for Korea, so that's all I remember. I don't know what my mother did with my letters. She re-married when I was four-years-old.

Comments: I was with the 839th EAB "B" Co. in 1955. I have some fond memories of the mess hall on the side of No Sweat Hill and Spam Creek. I was the last members of the 839th in Korea before we handed all of the equipment over to the Korean nationals. I was later transfered to the 802nd at Itazuki AB in Japan to finish my tour. Any body around from those days, drop me a line at Methaman98@hot mail.com...Catcha later...Ron

Comments: I transferred into the 839th up on the hill by the main gate of K-55 in Late December, 1954 from the 1903rd, K-6 at Pyong Taek. 1903rd was being deactivated (see my entry for 1903rd) and I didn't have required time in country to leave. First assigned to "A" company doing details around the company. Detailed to the base Air Police for 30 days, we were the equivalent of the vice squad, raiding whore houses & sending the troops we caught back to the base. No, we didn't arrest anyone. Since I was a quartermaster-trained killer, I was detailed again to AF base supply honchoing a group of Korean Laborers putting crashed airplanes in big crates for shipment to Japan. Seemed to be a lot of work for us. Transferred to Ft. Leonard Wood in July, 1955. Wonder if anyone remembers me? Bob Taylor or Tailor from San Diego? I went on to do 20 in the Air Force in broadcasting and public affairs. Totally retired now. Last job was as media relations officer for the Corps of Engineers in Los Angeles. Sort of fitting to begin and end my association with the government in the Corps. Norm Medland, MSgt, USAF, Retired

Comments: April 1952 to Feb 1953 I was assigned to Company C, 839th Engineer Aviation Battalion at K 14, Kimpo AFB. Then in June 52 we moved back to Osan AFB. I was there when most of the Air Base was rice patties. The runway was 9,000 feet long with 1,ooo foot over runs on each end. When I returned to the states the runway was layed most od the taxi ways and parking apron had been installed. One maintenance hanger was completed.

Comments: Arrived 2 weeks before the war ended. Worked on the runway, roads, and buildings. Dominant aircraft was the F-86. Lived in a 12 man tent on the hill. Supervised a group of Korean laborers on a daily basis. Went to Japan on R&R Had 8 weeks of basic and 8 weeks of engineer training at Fort Leonard Wood. Had a MOS of 1050, general carpenter. Received a 3 Month "Early out" release to attend college and have worked at college Physics Departments for the most part. I've heard that Osan ( k-55 ) is now an airport and would be interested to see what it looks like if I wouldn't have to go by troop ship.

SCARWAF

I work out of Osan AB and would like any former member of
the 839th Engineer Aviation Bn. to know that their handiwork still
survives.

I have a picture of the loading platform at base supply which has a
very large block of cement on which the base supply building rests
inscribed with "CO A 839th Engineer Aviation Battalion 1952".

From: Kay Rathjen Email address

My uncle, Dewey Pfister, served in Korea during 1952 - 1953 and is very
interested in locating Mash L. Tatum, Jr. Originally Dewey knew that
Mash was from North Carolina. My uncle does not have a computer, any
information that you can supply will be passed on to him. The second
person that Dewey would like to locate is Robert Weaver, originally
from Buffalo, N.Y.

The unit that these three men served in together was the 839th Engineer
Aviation Battalion. Please, if there is any way to locate these men,
let me know. I know that this would be very rewarding to my uncle.
