It was a very exciting experience the reason was explained in a Hollywood Movie titled "The Biloxi Blues" with Mathew Brodrick as the main actor. When the movie ended he said: "I realry did not like the army, but it was the most exciting time of my life. Possibly because we were so young. After that you get married, work and have a family. It becomes a rutine." I never did liked the army, but I had a great time. We were young and turned every thing into fun. I continue to have thoughts about Dale Lund and Keller. I was pulling CQ runner for Big D, SSG Davis, that night. The explosion actually shook the HQ building. I thought we all were going bye-bye. "THIS IS NOT A DRILL" was blaring over the loud speaker system and boy were people flying all over the place. Remember the drill? Anyway, there were some pretty funny stories that came out of the explosion. Since I was in tower platoon, you could imagine. Anyways, several weeks later I was pulling patrol when we found a Molotov cocktail on the window sill of one of the buildings. Cigarette went out otherwise we may have had a Part II. Great memories, better friends. Anyone know exactly where Chong Dong Ni was? Can't find it on the map. Take care. BEDO Keywords: Camp Ames |

| WILLIAM POPE wrote on January 20, 2007 City and State: SAN ANTONIO TX Unit: Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN Comments: I was there when the Hawk building went up. In fact, I was questioned about it, but hey, what would the Chaplain's Assistant know? Was also part of the 'Polish Air Force' gang who sold the before/during/after photos of the building and explosion for $5.00 a set. The explosion had to have been on 31 March 1973 as I remember that it was a payday and we only got paid once a month. NOTE: the before/after photo's were taken with (reluctant) permission from off base. The 'before' photo was actually a photo of the 833rd Co HQ building outside the storage area gate with the Hawk building in the background by accident. The 'during' photo was taken from the barracks area because it was pay day and one of the guys had just bought a new camera that day and was going over the instruction manual and shot off most of a roll of film. The 'after' photo was taken intentionally from off post, again with reluctant permission from the authorities. I recall that CID was very PO'ed when they demanded a set of the photo's for which we demanded $5.00. It then became 'Give us a set or we confiscate the negatives and possibly the camera.' Anyone seen or heard from Larry Veneski from 833rd? He was the leader of the Polish Air Force R/C model flying club. William H. | DOYLE PILAND wrote on July 12, 2006 City and State: LAS CRUCES NM Unit: 30TH ORDNANCE COMPANY (NIKE PLATOON) Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN Comments: The entry from 3 February 2006 from NORM SENKEL asks the question "Anyone know what really happened to the Hawk maintenance building that disappeared one night?" Yes, I do. One Friday afternoon at quitting time, one of the young soldiers from the 833rd who worked there told the rest of the crew that he had a few more things to do and was going to stay late. He indicated that he would lock up. After the others had left, he took some plastic explosives that he had acquired from somewhere, attached them to one of three spare Hawk warheads in the building. There were also two assembled Hawk missiles in the building. He attached a detonating device to the explosives, hooked the detonator up to the telephone, locked the building and left. At the time, all phones went through a manual switchboard. So, around 9:00 PM, he picked up a phone somewhere on base and asked for the number with the phone hooked up to the explosives. The operator connected to the number, pushed the "Ring Forward" switch and the building dissapeared. This happened sometime in early 1973 if I recall correctly. There is much more to the story.
