Comments: Korean War Project Key No: 13433 He's my uncle, my mothers brother. I'm seeking information from those vets who may have known him, and what happened to him. The family has no information from the Army about the circumstances in which he was captured or what pow camp he was in. He died 31Dec1951.

I've read several of the posts on this site, and I've found several posts from others about lost loved ones involved in fighting near Kunu-ri on 1Dec1950.

I'm wondering what happened there, anyone have any info?

Comments: Looking for anyone who served with my uncle in Korea, he lost his life in Sept. of 1950 when his unit was ambushed. He stayed with the radio and got reinforcements brought in.

He was from Minnesota. My family has passed on, they never brought up my uncle after he was killed and I wasn't born until 1951.

If anyone has info on him please let me know..

Comments: Little Joe was my uncle; sadly, we never met. He was killed before I was born. My father, John, and his siblings, Frank and Mary, kept his memory alive.

Anyone with information about Joe Errigo, your service time together, or his last days in combat, please e-mail or write. Every story is important.

Joe was awarded the Purple Heart(Posthumously), the Bronze Star, and The Oak Leaf Cluster for organizing and leading his troops across the Chong-chon River near Kujang-dong, then attempting to break through enemy road blocks. He was also a POW for awile. I would like to hear your stories.

The Army sent official notification of his status (KIA) in 1953, although it was presumed he was killed in 1950 and his grave marker says 1951.

Please let me document your stories and memories.

I'm a member of Wyoming Valley Korean War Veterans Assoc. in Pennsylvania, and would like to pass this info. on to our members. I too was in Kunu-ri but with the 66th Ord. LOOKING FOR MEMBERS OF BATTERY 'D' 82ND AAA AW BN, 2ND ID

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
Charlene Hayes wrote on 2001-06-22 15:09:07.0

Comments: Looking for information about my Great Uncle Sergeant Elwood E Overgard. The following is the letter we finally received from DPMO in Apr 2000. In early Feb '51, X Corps of the 8th US Army was conducting offensive operations in Central South Korea [Operation Roundup]. The 2nd ID's role in this operation was to support ROK forces with div artillery and with infantry battalions from the 38th regiment. From Feb 5-11, this force pushed northward along HWY 29; the force neared Hongcheon on Feb 11, when it was attacked by 3 Chinese divisions. These divisions were part of a major, combined Chinese and North Korea operation, the "Chinese Communist Forces Fourth Phase Offensive" [feb 11-17]. The Chinese attach caused the lead, 8th ROK Div. to buckle, and enemy forces succeeded in cutting HWY 29 in several places. On Feb 12, to avoid complete encirclement, US and ROK units began a series of fighting withdrawals south through several Chinese roadblocks along the highway. These withdrawing units first reached Hoengsong, then Wonju, where they successfully regrouped. It was during this moving battle that Sgt. Overgard was captured. Sgt. Overgard began to make his way North, then West, then North as a POW. The "Missing in Action, Captivity" report, contains a great deal of useful information from lists. However, many of the added narrative accounts provided by returning POW's were never fully cross-reference. In fact, two POW's who either escaped or were simply left behind by their captors in March and April 1951 reported that Sgt Overgard alive in enemy hands. Also, at least one radio broadcast from Peking mentions Sgt Overgard. In 1953 a witness to his final hours was discovered. He said Sgt Overgard was gravely ill, but reached the Suan Bean Camp in early April 1951 where he died among friends and was buried on a hillside overlooking the site. His companions then continued their march north, a few days later. We here at DPMO have every reason to believe that this report is credible-but surprised that it was not incorporated into the "Missing in Action, Captivity" document cited above. If there is anyone out there that knew my uncle, his wife was pregnant when he left and he has a son who never met him that would like to know as much as possible. Thank you for any help I receive. Charlene Hayes

Dear Mr. Barker:

Richard W. Krepps

My twin brother was taken prisoner on Dec. 1, 1950 while at
Kunu-ri, N. Korea. He was with Battery D 82nd
AAA SP Bn. 2nd Inf Div. We were in the same battery, same platoon,
just different squads.

I was returning from Japanese Hospital and when I rejoined the unit in
mid Dec. 1950 I learned my brother was missing.

I have DOD reports that say he died on June 21, 1951 after suffering
mental illness and was buried at Camp #5.

I also have other reports that say different dates of death and for
different reasons.

I would like to communicate with anyone that remembers
Richard W. Krepps during his captivity. I hope someone will fill in
that lost time for we spent every day of our first 19 1/2 years
together.

Served with 82nd AAA AW Bn (SP) from 49 to 51-early Aug 50
Assigned to Naktong Perimeter VIC Hyunpong. Flattened that
town's houses w/M-39. Evacuated last infantry squad from bridge
area there. Believe A Co 38th?.

North after breakout on 16 Sept. Lost M-39 while on point of
motorized patrol north of Won-ni when Chinese first hit. Could
have been farthest northerly penetration in that sector. Around
26-27 Nov. After rejoining unit remember climbing to crest of ridge
near small stream that flowed red with blood of casualties from
2nd Engineers. Removed last of ammunition for our tracks in burning
town of Kunu-ri AFTER the storage had been wired to be blown.

Came out with 23rd rear guard which didn't run "Gauntlet" R&R
cancelled on 30 Dec and assigned to a new M-16 Half-track and
reported to 38th Regt CP on New Years Eve. Went on reinforced
company patrol VIC Hoengsong 4 or 5 Jan made contact just before
dark but Infantry OIC wouldn't let us cream enemy caught with
pants down. By morning they'd bugged out. Requested Air Strike
...almost mistook us for Chinks. Retrograded back to Wonju.

WIA 7 Jan 51- Wonju near power station VIC Hoengsong Road
& railroad underpass while supporting Easy Company 38th Inf.

Returned from hospital at Sendai in April. Remember seeing
Air Force "Boxcars" downed by friendly artillery in June. Supported
on ridges by BIG searchlights which illuminated enemy for us.

Worked with 11th Marines and saw Chesty Pullers bridge washed
away. Got a chance to fly over enemy lines in a spotter Cub. Wasn't
happy when I learned the pilot had hardened his seat, but not the
back one.

Returned stateside early Oct 51.

Would really like to meet any members of Sgt Hunnecutts(?Sp) outfit
(E-38th) that followed us out when we broke thru the roadblock at the
railroad underpass on 7 Jan to reach Bn CP at the end of the bridge at
Wonju.

I'm looking for any info on the death of Maj S J Stevens. Last known
to be prisoner of war Bean Camp. No acknowledgement by N Korean's or
Chinese as a POW. Known to have been alive in Feb 51. I been waiting
for near fifty years for closure. Would greatly appreciate any info.

My mother has a letter of 1st Lt. Wilbur Webster cofirming his presence
at the camp. Lt Webster later escaped. It was also later confirmed
by another prisoner (which my aunt has copy) that he was sick, probably
with dysentery. He evidentally made a roll call one night, but was not
present the next morning. Due to lack of medical facilities we believe
he died.

Thank you ahead of time.

(note from KWP) Vince Krepps has given John a long msg regarding the
Capt(Major) and his role in unit actions up to Kunu ri
