LOOKING FOR MEMBERS OF BATTERY 'D' 82ND AAA AW BN, 2ND ID

Charlene Hayes wrote on 2001-06-22 15:09:07.0

Comments: Looking for information about my Great Uncle Sergeant Elwood E Overgard. The following is the letter we finally received from DPMO in Apr 2000. In early Feb '51, X Corps of the 8th US Army was conducting offensive operations in Central South Korea [Operation Roundup]. The 2nd ID's role in this operation was to support ROK forces with div artillery and with infantry battalions from the 38th regiment. From Feb 5-11, this force pushed northward along HWY 29; the force neared Hongcheon on Feb 11, when it was attacked by 3 Chinese divisions. These divisions were part of a major, combined Chinese and North Korea operation, the "Chinese Communist Forces Fourth Phase Offensive" [feb 11-17]. The Chinese attach caused the lead, 8th ROK Div. to buckle, and enemy forces succeeded in cutting HWY 29 in several places. On Feb 12, to avoid complete encirclement, US and ROK units began a series of fighting withdrawals south through several Chinese roadblocks along the highway. These withdrawing units first reached Hoengsong, then Wonju, where they successfully regrouped. It was during this moving battle that Sgt. Overgard was captured. Sgt. Overgard began to make his way North, then West, then North as a POW. The "Missing in Action, Captivity" report, contains a great deal of useful information from lists. However, many of the added narrative accounts provided by returning POW's were never fully cross-reference. In fact, two POW's who either escaped or were simply left behind by their captors in March and April 1951 reported that Sgt Overgard alive in enemy hands. Also, at least one radio broadcast from Peking mentions Sgt Overgard. In 1953 a witness to his final hours was discovered. He said Sgt Overgard was gravely ill, but reached the Suan Bean Camp in early April 1951 where he died among friends and was buried on a hillside overlooking the site. His companions then continued their march north, a few days later. We here at DPMO have every reason to believe that this report is credible-but surprised that it was not incorporated into the "Missing in Action, Captivity" document cited above. If there is anyone out there that knew my uncle, his wife was pregnant when he left and he has a son who never met him that would like to know as much as possible. Thank you for any help I receive. Charlene Hayes

Comments: I would appreciate any information concerning father, Master Sergeant Artie Manning.

He was captured in late December/early November and marched to Camp 5 where he expired in February 1951.

I was 1 1/2 years old when he left, consequently, coversations with others who knew him have kept him alive for me.

Thank you for your time and committment to our freedom.

My most sincere regards,

Artie Manning, Jr. (H) 931-647-3966 (W) 931-645-2565 Ext. 251 email artscoot48@yahoo.com

Info from Defense POW/MIA Personnel Office said he became missing during the Battle of Kuni-ri (Ch'ongch'on River) which began Nov.25, 1950. He was lost on the upper or Kujang side of the battlefield. His last letter home was Oct. 2, 1950. His name is recorded at the "Punchbowl" in Honolulu, HI. Bill is my wife's brother and we are trying to locate someone who may be able to provide more details about him during that time. We would be most thankful for any information.

Comments: I was injured at Kunu-ri, evacuated to a hospital in Japan, returned to my unit 29 January, 1951, wounded again and was captured at Changbong-ni 11 February, 1951. I escaped and was picked up by the 7th Cavalry, 11 March, 1951. After 2 weeks recuperation in the hospital in Japan I was placed on 45 days convalescent leave at General MacArthurs Headquarters and the Far East Air Force Headquarters to assist in the preparation of the first program on Survival, Escape and evasion. While in a convalescent leave status I traveled to every Air Base in Japan, Okinawa, Guam and Korea as a member of a 3-man team presenting briefings on Survival, Escape and Evasion.
