AFKN HQ.,1954-1955 |
| CHARLES WARNOCK JR. wrote on February 15, 2008 City and State: PORTLAND OR Unit: 8214TH ARMY UNIT Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN Comments: Hq. AFKN during that period was located at the (Sounds like KyungBuk) girls high school away from downtown Taegu. We were in the Front Quanset Hut, of 4 huts ion a row. The others contained Radio KILROY, the production studios, and personel sleeping quarters. Next to these was a transient personel tent. Behind were three more quanset huts containing the Officers quarters, Supply, and the movie theatre. Next to these was a tent used by the Korean laundry crew. I have pictures of the small base taken from the air. They are on line, however there is an error saying the picture was taken in Pusan. It was Taegu. I would enjoy hearing from anyone stationed at any of the radio stations during that period of time. The stations with the network I can recall were named after persons or things that were wonderers or moved around alot. they include; Kilroy in Taegu, Homesteader in Pusan, Vagabond on Seoul, Comet on the west coast, Meteor at Pohong Dong,Cavalier near Seoul, Gypsy up north, Nomad up north, Mercury, do not remember the location. Colonel Morris Milner was the unit commander at that time. First Sgts. were Sgt Takahashi, Sgt Yourg, and MasterSgt. Sanford. Sgt Sanford passed away last year. He retired as a Vice President of a New York Bank. He lived in Florida and I kept in touch with him via the telephone. I would really like to hear from anybody assigned to AFKN In 1954 and 1955. Best Regards to All. Keywords: Assigned to Hq. AFKN in Jan. 1954, in Taegu. Was assigned for one month to the 7th Transportation Port Command in Pusan, April-May 1955. |

| GARY JAY WILLIAMS wrote on February 2, 2008 City and State: Unit: AFKN NEWS, SEOUL Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN Comments: I served as a television and radio newscaster at AFKN from March 1961 to July 1962. Lt. Colonel Bartoni was our unit commander. We were there when Park Chung Hee overthrew the corrupt government of Sigmun Rhee. We also did live television productions--a Tonight Show and we did a full live production of the play Journey's End, led by Peter Sander. (The play, a WWI tragedy was revived on B'way last year--2007). Ed Graham (from Baltimore) was a very popular DJ. Others on the newsroom staff: Wes Elliot, our ranking NCO; Jim Briggs (Indiana), Les Hopkins (Pittsburg), Chris Glenn (later CBS news radio). Others I remember: Bob Towers (LA?); Jerry Mosey (Iowa City), Signal Corps photographer. Keywords: Armed Forces Korean Network, 1961-62, Seoul. Long after the war, but unsettling years.
