Comments: I was astounded to hear from Carlos Grider... this is the first person I've heard from in more than 50 years. (Thanks Koreanwar.org.)I was driving in Washington DC rush hour when he called, and my ever-fuzzier memory was not in top form. Bordeaux wa my second hitch and I tend to get the memories mixed... after thinking about it, I recall:
Lived in the big 12-man hut across from the snack bar. Ernest Kelly was my buddy (beat me at chess day-after-day)George McIver was the class-clown, Johnny San(D)ford the musician, Tim Bjella the stoic, Verl Hatch the tailor.
Favorite spot in Bordeaux was the the bar Nice, run by Josef and his red-headed wife Yvette. Christine was my friend among the girls.
I did get an email last year from Lewis R. Emery, who was engineer supply officer for the 486th EAB. I did remember Grider and Will Peek - used Peek's darkroom a lot.

Comments: I was there from December 53 to May 55
I worked in the Operations Office
One of my buddies was Bobby L Holloway from Cookeville, Tn. I think he was in Company C. He was working for a while building fillods at Cazaux Air Base. I just carried his coffin to its grave three years ago.
The French commander at Cazaux Air Base was Col Gavoille, famous for his exploits during WWII and squadron leader for the famous writer, war pilot Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. There was also a Pete Menda (a buddy of Bobby Holloway's).
Col Lawrence was famous among us for having survived the death camps in the Philipines. He and his young wife had a baby born (a boy, I think) while in Bordeaux.
Some of my hut mates: Robert Scandora, Willis M Peek (Bn photographer), Al Chelius, Tony Donatelli, Chester Kubas.
In downtown Bordeaux, a lot of us guys hung out at Jean's Bar or John's Bar. A couple of the girls who hung out there were Carmen and Suzy. Suzy was Polish; and I heard after I'd left that she married an American airman from the base.
There was also a really neat lieutenant from Georgia Tech. I think his dad owned an automobile agency. I fine officer.
My highest rank was corporal.
There were a couple of good guys who worked in supply and their names escape me.
I can't remember the Operations-Officer's name, Major something or other but he was o.k., too.
I've been back to Bordeaux three times. The bus that used to run by the gate still runs by the same gate. I haven't gone onto the base. It would be great to find our original Operations office building of WWII vintage and which as near the back gate. Then we moved into one of the filloid that the battalion built near the parking apron. The hotels I used to stay at on Saturday nights are closed and the buildings appear vacant. Except the Hotel Trompette building is still there but no longer a hotel. The Chez Dubern restaurant is still there. The Splendide Hotel is no longer extant. I think the Hotel Bordeaux across from the Grand Theatre is being restored after many years having been closed up. When I return to Bordeaux, I stay at the Hotel du Theatre which is small, really cheap, nice and 1 block from the Grand Theatre.
Western Europe has become prohibitively expensive. So I just made my 1st trip to India NOT on a tour.
Keywords: Lt Col Ray G Lawrence Bn Commander (a good guy) Capt Pappy Chiles Company Commander Lt Diton my nemesis (but he might have been ok otherwise) Lt x ? from Georgia Tech -- a really cool Lt. I wish I could locate him. He might be around 75 years old.

Comments: I'm looking for anyone who served with my Dad, Robert (Bob) Weber with the 813th EAB in Anchorage, Alaska with SCARWAF. I want to put a book together and surprise my dad at Christmas; with notes and letters from anyone who served with him or went in town and got drunk and had some good old times with him. He's still kicking; and at a young 73, it's hard to keep him down, he's on the go all the time. Any info I'd greatly appreciate it! Sincerely, Bobby Weber's daughter, Debi Weber-Dec

Comments: I joined the 817th at Fairford as a raw 2nd Lt. Thank God for Tomczak, Brown and Hambach who took care of me. Later, I took care of them(when required) and others, who were late getting back from Bristol. Later part of our Company went to Manston (Margate). What a town. A great place to be if you were single. One of my counterparts (un-named of course)made the London Papers. I walked into the mess hall on Monday morning and eveyone was surprised. They thought the un-named officer in the papers was me, since I was single and it couldn't have been any one who was married. Oh well, "those were the days". Later, we went to Chelveston and I departed in December of '53. Thanks for all your help, and remeber the Citations we got from Brigade. Company A was the best and again , thank you and it was a great ride. Harry Williams
P.S. I defended 5 of you in Special Court Marshals and we never lost. I'm sorry, I don't remember your names, but obviously we won because you were'nt guilty!!!
