Comments: My father, Maj. Arthur George Holland, was stationed in both Tokyo and Korea. He served in the US Army winning the Silver Star and is buried in Arlington. I was born in March 1951 at the US Army Hospital in Tokyo.
Would like information about the hospital; records, pictures etc.
Thanks!

Comments: I am helping my brother David G. Moore on his lost records when he was in the hospital in Tokoyo. He says he has no recollection on why he was there. He thinks it was a head injury. He was a private first class RA15-381-718. If you need more info I will get it from him. He has his other records except when he was in the hospital. It was in 1950 he thinks. In fact he has no records from 1950 to 1952. He was based at Sadia Base Albuerque New Mexico but signed up in Fort Knox Ky
He would appreciate any information on this time of his service

Comments: My mother worked in the army hospital in Tokyo from 1948 - 1951 (I think), while she served in the Women's Army Corps. While she was there, she performed with other women from the WAC and WAAF (I believe) as part of a dance troupe for a review called the "Follies" at the Ernie Pyle Theater. Her photo (in costume) was featured in the hospital newpaper (unknown date). Apparently, there was also a life-sized photo, or poster of my mother at the Ernie Pyle Theater to promote the performance. It went missing after the show! Hey--she had great legs... :) I am looking for anyone who may have a copy of this photo, or information about the performance. If anyone wants to admit stealing the life sized poster of my mom, I would love to have it. I'm sure the statute of limitation has run!
Thanks! Dana E. Owens

Comments: I was stationed at the 8167th Army Hospital in 1953 and 1954. It is located in Ryogoku in Tokyo Japan and located on the Sumida-ku River. It is not far from the Sumo training and competition Place. You can find the Sumo Place on any Tokyo map and then find a bridge accross the Sumida river. Close to the Ryogoku JT Sobu station. Look for the Ryogoku Staion in Tokyo on Google maps and you can see the whole area as it is today. Follow this to the river and you will see the new hospital
There is now a hospital on the same site having torn down part of the old 8167th. They have actually used parts of the basement of the old 8167th in the new hospital.
The 8167th was originally built for the Japanese people following the great earthquake (1923) by the American Red Cross. We took it over again during the Korean war. The 8167th was attached to Korea and those who server there were given the Korean ribbon.
The 8167th functioned as a psychiatric hospital to take psychiatric casualities from the front lines to evaluate them and determine if they were capable of being sent back to regular duty or air-evaced back to the states. As far as I know this was the only function of the hospital although they did have a medical section for medical treatments of those who were sent there. I do not think it was a general med section for others.
The 8167th received those "near" turn-coates that came out of Korea during big and little switch. They were evaluated there, debriefed, studied and then returned to the US. This was, in itself, a very interesting experience.
The last time I visited the site the main entryway was still up and I wondered if it was going to be retained as part of the new hospital buildings. That was about 20 years ago.
There was a photography club of the ospital employees that was keeping photographs of the history of the hospital. Some of these pictures were displayed in the basement halls. I spent some time with the president of the club telling him what I knew of the history.
Behind the hospital is a park (Eko-in Temple) that was dedicated to the people killed in the great earthquake and I believe were interned there. Every year they have a celebration dedicated to those killed at that time.
At least this is the story I learned while there and visiting in later years. Hope this helps those who are looking for information.

Comments: 49th general hospital was on 9-1 akashi-chou, chuo-ku Tokyo (zip 104-044) The buildings were rebuilt in 1973 after it had returned to japan after the korea war. The main building was built in 1933 by Rudolph Toysler (spelling may not accurate ?) who imaged the Massachusetts Genral Hospital The model of the new building is St. Marks(spelling ?) of Saltlake city of Uta
The annex was located about a half mile's away from the main buildings. It is National Cancer Center. The both hospitals are very important hospital even now.
I worked there in 1949.

Comments: My Father was stationed at Tachikawa Air Force Base in 1948. I contacted Polio and was sent to the 361st Station Hospital from November 48 to about May of 49. I am trying to find out the street location of the 361st Station Hospital in Tokyo. I found information from the internet that the 361st Station Hospital later became known as 8167th Army Hospital. On a 1948 map of Tokyo from the internet these are the hospital names that I found, Tokyo Army Hospital, Tokyo Army Hospital Annex, Tokyo Army Hospital Annex No.2. Does anyone know if any of these are the 361st / 8167th Army Hospital. The map from the internet was difficult to read some of the street address but Tokyo Army Hospital looks like it's was located at St. Lukes Ave. and 20th st. ???????? This is the url address of the 1948 Tokyo map I was looking at: http://yohidevils.net/kanto/maps/tokyo00.htm
