Comments: I worked at the asphalt plant in front of the quarry between K-14 and K16 on the Han River. I lived in Yongdungp'o and had a house boy named "Lee Bung Yol". I can't remember the tent number. I remember a truck driver named "Chappy". Was there when air force took over our jobs. I also remember a Sargent named "Edson".

Comments: My dad, Robert (Bob) Douglas Prather, was a Captain in the 822 Combat Engineers in Korea during the war.

He was from Georgetown, Kentucky and died of cancer in service at Fitz Simmons Army Hospital in Denver, Colorado, in 1955.

I'm sure you didn't know him, but he died when I was only 6. I am looking for links to possibly find out some of his army buddies to learn more about the dad I really never got to know before they are all gone.

Thanks for any help.

Doug Prather (son of Robert Douglas Prather)

Beginnings of 811 EAB

Thomas Mitchell wrote on 2002-03-03 08:21:56.0

Comments: Hello Fello Engineer Veterans,

I'm a USAF civil engineering officer and I learned about the 811 EAB just a few days ago. The 820rd RED HORSE alumni committee has great information on SCARWAF, but I'm particulary interested in the beginnings of the 811th, since I now know there were combat engineering unit in the China-Burma theatre that built the Ledo/Stillwell Road. I was also stationed at Kunsan AB a few years ago and wondered if the 811th had something to do with it's construction.

Anything you can provide would be helpful and appreciated ... Major Thomas Mitchell.

Comments: I served with the 811th EAB in Korea and Japan in 54 & 55. I was an A.F. radio operator. I upped my AFSC to senior comm center spec. while with the 811th. What a great bunch of guys.Pfc. Bobby M. Hayes Pfc. Maurice Hoffman Airman Arnold Lessig from Grand Island Neb. and so many more I cant remember. The Army and Air Force got along just fine together. We were at Kimpo A.F.B. not the main base, we lived in squad tents, like MASH, but not as classy. We were also at Itami A.F.B. in Japan, and at Chitose A.F.B. in Japan. I cant forget my friend Gary D. Rhymes, we were stationed at the 796th A.C.& W. Squadron in Bartlesville, Okla. Much to quiet there so we volunteered for Korea. Anyone out there from the 811th especially from the comm. center, send me an "E" I would be glad to hear from you. God bless all and God bless America.

Fields (K14 Kimpo, & K16 Seoul City Air Base, the outfit constructed
