808th AEB Info

Comments: Hello Veterans and Friends: Just a note for the folks that may have known a Corporal named John William Bartol, known as "Billy". He served with Company A, 808th AEB as a Heavy Equipment Operator (Crane Shovel) while in Korea. He passed away in 1970 due to complications from a tumor. Should anyone care to pass along a few memories regarding this man, I would love to read them. I have a few photos of his group while with SCARWAF - platoon photos etc, which I would be proud to share, perhaps you are in one of them? Seeking family of Capt. Charles L GROSS

Comments: Can anyone help solve this mystery for me! My late father kept a box which I believe belonged to Captn Gross, sent as a postal gift I assume,from the MacVeans in N.Y. (father worked for the Royal Family at Windsor Castle,but I assume this has no connection) I never asked him about it as I didn't know the box existed until his death in '82. He had all his 'treasures' stored in it! I tucked it away in the attic and never gave it another thought. However, now I would like to return it to the family as I am sure they would love to have it safely back home rather than gathering dust in an English attic! My sons will probably toss it in the bin when I'm gone, which would be sad. The info was painted inside the lid and the box is wooden, approx 9"x11"x4" and painted dark green. Just wish I'd been able to ask him about it before he passed away! My Father's unit 1953-1954

Comments: My father was in the 808th, he got over there in Korea on August 27, 1953(one month to the day after the cease-fire was singed). He talks about building a air strip at K-8(Kusan) and stories about on guard duty and the other guards getting scared when they see a red light coming over the hill they thought the Reds were attacking again, when the full moon came over the hill my father calm told them it's only the moon. I'm searching for my father's war buddies of the 808th Engineer Aviation Battalion while stationed at Kusan(K-8) during the time of about August 1953 to about early Spring or ealy Summer 1954.

Info about my brother

Comments: This is about all the info I have on my brother DEAN LA VERN HAMILTON. Would sure like to learn more. He was killed in a hiway accident so I never had a chance to find out about his service time. I was in the USAF in 1955 so we didn't have much time together after he came home in 1953.

Comments: Things I remember: 1.Roll call annc'mt by Bn Comm. Our Bn had highest VD rate in entire Army, 16%. 2. A.F. armamant boys loading B-26 with bombs,dropped one. 10 planes were destroyed before fireworks stopped. 3. Troop info & edcu sessions, great visual aids! 4. Pete Swang, Bn photographer, & his photo books, WOW! 5. Base Comm. who liked to take a B-26 up & blow up enemy locomotives. Called him locomotive Charley. 6. Blowing up mountain for new runway. A big fissel, not enough explosive. 7. Sand fleas & getting sprayed with DDT every now & then. 8. The guy from Detroit who ran a crap game all night long in the tent across from mine. 9. The typhoon that never came. 10. The horrible water in the company lister bag. 11. Ronnie & Buckshot the Korean kids who lived with us. 12. The Korean trucks & crew who cleaned the latrines, a lesson in cleanliness. 13. We had a sign in our survey office that said "Welcome to Kunsan, the only place in the world where the germs are big enough to be seen". Does anybody else remember any of this stuff?

Comments: While we were on Okinawa I came onto a copy of the Battalion History. I was a draftsman in the S-3 Office at the time and read it through completely. The history covered the unit from its inception through Australia, New Guinea, all the way to Okinawa. It was a very interesting read. Does anyone anywhere know how to acquire a copy of it.

Okianwa Camp Bishigawa/Sansone

Comments: Am seeking 808th EAB personnel involved in the removal of the old Camp Bishigawa, Okinawa and the construction of a new camp that was named Camp Sansone (USA 1st SFG (Abn) sometime around 1962. The 623 AC&W Sq (USAF Air Defense Radar operations) were the first to occupy the camp in tents 1946 and remained there after Quonsets were built beginning in 1947. Our Sq departed for southern Okinawa in 1956 and the camp was occupied by the USMC until sometime in 1961-1963. We ahve been told that the camp was leveled and rebuilt by the 808th and occupied by the 1st SFG (Abn) for a number of years. Our Assn comrades that "grew up" there in those early years have a keen desire to learn of its fate over the years. I have just returned from a visit to that former camp and am trying to fill in the blanks about its history. We have an excellent relationship with the USMC that occupied the camp after our units departure, but have been unable to learn about the period after their presence. If any former 808th members can help fill in the blanks, we would greatly appreciate it.

Brother of Harvey Matz, 808th EAB SCARWAF

Comments: Would anyone know where he served in Korea? In his picture of him in uniform he has the Korean Service Ribbon with 3 battle stars and what I think is the Army Commendation Ribbon. Would anyone know the history of him earning them? Also would anyone know what patches where worn on the sleeves of those serving in Korea? He would never talk about Korea when he was still living, or if I asked about the ribbons he would just say that it was a long time ago and that he didn't remember.

Comments: Arrived at Kunsan AB April 1954. Was transferred to Okinawa in July 1954. Never got to find out how cold a Korean winter was. If it was colder than the one I spent at Fort Leonard Wood, this California boy might not have made it! Left Okinawa in August 1955. Worked at asphalt plant on K-8 and rock crushing plant on Kadena AFB.We lived in squad tents in Korea and quonset huts in Bisha Gawa. Would like to hear from others who served at that time.

Comments: I was assigned to the 808th in 1948 after Basic Training at Lackland AFB. I later transferred to another outfit. I understand the 808th went to Okinawa first and then Korea. I am looking for a good friend who I enlisted with and was with the 808th. I heard that he was discharged due to being underage (16) and sent home. Son of Charles G. Jochum, Jr. - Help Me

Comments: I am the son of Korean War U.S. Army veteran Charles G. Jochum Jr. who passed away in 1983.
