Comments: When the 862nd was deactivated in Germany, in May 1956 I was a short timer but Army still transferred me to Co A, 801st EAB, Molesworth AFB, England. I was Operations Clerk under SFC Downs. Co A 1st/sgt was M/sgt Towner (Battle of Bulge survivor), CO was Captain Cox & Company Clerk was Wally Byers.
Made my first trip to Scotland in July 1954 to visit friends. Met young lassie and spent weekends on the train between Kettering and Glasgow until I was rotated home in November 1956. The lassie came to Philadelphia and we've been happily married for 52 years. Anyone out there?

Comments: Was in 801st from 1952 to Nov 1953. We were in very drafty quonset huts with barrel stoves. Building was put up during WW11 and very drafty. Was Co Clerk and then personnel section. Was just contacted by a guy from the 817th EAB which was at upper Heyford when I was there in 52. Memory is a little fuzzy but would like to see if any of you remember me. Had a friend name of Minah Snapp from W. Va. I married a girl from Burton Latimer in Nov 53, still married and enjoying life. Go back to Kettering for a month about every year.

Comments: Among 9 other draftees working in Enlisted Personnel, Fort Belvoir, VA we found a levy for 10 clerk-typists in England. Since the Korean War was the major option, a visit to Europe at Uncle Sam's expense looked good. Identified as SPP's at the time, our Major in Enlisted Personnel authorized us to ship ourselves and fill the levy. We all changed our MOS's from Personnel Administrative Specialists to Clerk-Typists. Most of us had less than a year in our term of Service. Upon arriving in England the question was asked, "Where did you guys come from?" This was a Regular Army oreganization. A conspiracy of silence prevailed as we went to work as clerk-typists. All of us advanced our experience and represented the USA with distinction among our English friends.

Comments: Among 10 draftees from Fort Belvoir, VA. When we arrived in England answering a levy rerquest for 10 clerk typists, the commander couldn't possible figure how these 10 college graduates, all draftees came in answer to his levy. Little did he know we were employed in the The Engineer Center Regiment personnel section (enlisted). Hardly a fit for this RA SCARWAF Engineer Aviation Battalion. None of us had a year left on our two year requirement. I expected 10 clerk typists from clerk typist school. We had shipped ourselves and enjoyed the visit to England at Uncle Sam's expense.

Comments: Was assigned to 801st as enlisted man in February 1949 at Ft Warren, Wyoming. Went to Greenland with them and we returned to Wyoming. The unit was reassigned to Eglin AFB and I left them in 1950 when I applied for OCS. The unit did, as I recall, go to Korea. The quick tour in Greenland was a 10 hour a day, six days a week assignment and the battalion was resurfacing and repairing runways for the Air Force at Blue West One.

I went to Germany with the 801st.Over there they began calling us a Hvy.Constr.Bn. I left Germany on Dec.29th,1957 on the USS Gen. Taylor, with four bottles of cognac in my duffle bag.Made the New Year go a little better for a few of us.
