Comments: All ambulance drivers, 1960-1961, I think it was A Company. Some of us were extended by the "Berlin Crisis", especially David Brown. He set fire to the bulletin board in the hospital to convince Admin that he was a little loopy, and should thus be sent home. Didn't work.

Comments: Trying to help my ill uncle Thomas Mahoney connect with his best friend in the service.
What Tommy recalls is the following: Dan Silva, originally from San Jose CA, Dan would be in his late 60's.
They served together 1956-1957 in South Korea in the 7th Division, 7th Medical Batallion, one particular place was Chung Mao.
Please if anyone can advise me as to how I can go about connecting with this man, I would be ever so greatful.
Thank you,
Elaine

He wishes he could get in contact with other soldiers in the 7th Medical Batallion Ambulance Company. He was captured in the Battle of Ohosin Resevior. Does the "Frozen Chosin" mean anything? In Dec '52 he was in the Regt. (3rd) Stockade in Changson No. Korea from 1950 to 1953. I urge anyone who been looking for your fellow Vets to please contact me and I will put you in touch with my Uncle. Thank you and thank you to all you brave soldiers who served our country.

Do You Know/Are You James F Shine? |

VENITA L. Spier wrote on 2001-10-18 21:01:14.0
Comments: In my search for the story of my Granduncle, Medic Glenn Runge (KIA Operation Showdown 10/14/1952), I received a copy of a letter sent to Glenny's sister, Joyce Briggs, in 1953 from a James F. Shine from Maryland. James had written that Glenny was assigned to his platoon, and was killed by enemy mortar while he was carrying a wounded soldier to safety. James was also carrying a wounded man but was far enough in front of Glenny that he was not fatally injured by the blast. James wrote that Glenny had been injured prior to picking up the wounded solider, and was out of medical supplies.
My mother, brother, and I are faithfully searching for anything we can find about Glenny's life and death in Korea. We have been captivated by his story and the depth of love we see for him in those who knew him. We want to share his story with the children who follow us to ensure his memory stays alive in our family as completely as possible.
A critical piece of information we are missing in finding out more about his last days is the platoon to which he was assigned.
So if you are or know James F. Shine or remember Glenn Runge, I would very much appreciate hearing from you. Thank you.

He was also a P.O.W. captured with 6 other men by the Chinese and taken to a holding camp. They escaped by cutting a hole in the fence. The Chinese chased them to the Yalu river which took about 8 days. Only three of the 7 men who escaped survived the river. The names my dad remembers of the 7 men are Rodrigues(died by gunfire in the yalu river), Johnston(survived the escape), Galk( survived the escape), and my dad James Lee Hall(survived the escape with the help of Galk who went back in the Yalu river to help him) They were taken back to Japan for physicals and recuperation. My dad was a little over 6ft. 3in tall and only weighed 130lbs.He was on the USS Briggs which broke the record for time on his trip home, 6 days!! He was in the 7th division and 1st calvery Regiment. Thank You, Patti Martin

Comments: My friends and I are working on a history project which focuses on MASH units being a frontier. The theme of the paper and video is how the early MASH units were a frontier in which those who served there dealt with many hardships. If anyone could offer us information we would appreciate it. Thank you!

Comments: Interesting that Sandra Quall's request for information is directly above mine since our fathers were lost together just as the chinese overran Inchon. Sandra, You are welcome to any information that I have about the incident, but I think that our mothers corresponded at the time. If anyone else has more information, it would be such a blessing to these family members.

Comments: My Granduncle Glenn W Runge served with the 7/31 from 10/5/1951 to 10/14/1952 when he was killed in action. Glenny was a medic and family legend has it that his men called him "Runge" rather than "Medic" as he was wounded once by a North Korean who called for a medic. I'm looking for any information about Glenny himself, or about Operation Showdown which is where I belive Glenny may have been killed.

Were located north of Uijonbu/Chorwon area.
Recently visited the area and located a KATUSA (Korean soldier)

Also, any help you can give on methods to locate rosters of men

Cpl.Leonard J. Smith, Medic, serving with I believe the
7th Infantry Div. I do have further information, but not at hand.
He was captured close to the Manchurian Border, right before
the first attack by the Red Chinese, in 1951.
Details:
Name: Cpl Leonard J. Smith RA 14290427
Transferred to Korea: Sept. 1950
Unit: 7th Medical Bn 17th Reg. 7th Inf. Div.
Hostile Action: Onchon-Ni 9 October 1950, for which he was awarded the
Bronze Star, posthumously. The only thing mentioned in the news clipping
is that the troops had penetrated to the Manchurin Border, in North East Korea,
a few days after the 1st attack by Red Chinese.
He was reported missing 24 November 1950, and was presumed dead
after more than a year, and was reported to have died in North Korean
Prison Camp. At some point he was promoted to Sgt.
I do not know if this was before he was presumed dead or not.
Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You,
Sandra Qualls
---from KWP----
His file shows that he was MIA on Nov 24, 1950. Later declared dead in
camp.
