I'm looking for anyone that might have been in the Army with my dad in 1951. It must have been hard to go from Cedar Rapids Iowa to Korea.

Comments: I would like to find out any information on my cousin CPL Charles M. Counts. He was with the 7th Cavalry Regiment (INF) 1st Cavalry Division. He was listed as Died of Wounds (DOW) on 11 Nov. 1950. His MOS was 04745. His brother Billy was listed MIA 19 days later. This is all my family knows. Any information on what happened would be greatly appreciated. I'm currently serving here in Korea and would like to learn as much about my cousin's service while here.

Comments: My Father was SFC Marion A. Brown,KIA Oct. 03,1951 near Chobakkol. We just found this great project and are looking for anyone who can fill Us in on details of that day, and or might have known My Father. He was only with the Unit for about a month but was probably a platoon Sergent although I don't know for sure. He also servered with the 5th Army, Blackhawk div. during WW2 and was at the battle of the Bulge and later went to the Phillipines. He was discharged in 1946, stayed in the reserves and reenlisted in 1950 for Korea. I would love to talk with anyonewho might have known Him in either war or has information about 10/03/51 and what happened there. He was from Richmond, Kansas and was probably called "Brownie" like a million others. Any contacts will be appreciated. Thank You

MICHAEL R. (MIKE) Lane wrote on 1999-08-10 00:00:00.0
Comments: 17 August, 1999
Ed Bradley called me. Sd he was a past president of the 1st Cav Div association. Sd that a Johnny Potts saw my email re Pete and called him to find out if he remembered my half-brother, Pfc. Peter Anthony Viscuso. He did. Seems that even though he was only a year older (19) than Pete, he had been a corporal. Ed was given promotions due to casualties and finally given a battlefield promotion. Ed had been Petes platoon leader. They were H Co., 7th Cav (Inf) 1st Cav Div (Inf) - Gary Owens, and a heavy weapons platoon (machine gun). Pete had been an assistant gunner and ammunition bearer and in training to be a gunner. Ed remembered a man in the platoon named Wright who had jokingly told Pete that he was too tall and a great target (Pete was 61). From that day until he was killed, Pete walked with his shoulders hunched over. Mr. Wright was later killed while lighting a fire. Something that baffled Ed because he said the Mr. Wright was an experienced soldier and should not have been making hinself such a target - irony.
Petes platoon was in a forward position on the morning of 12 August, 1950 where the battle of Nak Tong River, near Wich-On-Dong village and hill 209 took place. Their position was about 14 miles south west of Taegu which is where they had the 1st Cav. headquarters. At approximately 0600 hours the 25th Regiment of the 10th North Korean Division using refugees with wooden sticks (so they would appear to have weapons) as human shields, began their mass human wave assault. According to ED, the North Koreans used the refugees, then had other people with pouches full of grenades that came as close as they could and threw as many grenades as they could (before being shot down) into the U.S positions. Then came the North Koreans with sub-machine guns, called burp guns. Ed remembered that Pete had been shot in the face below the right eye and killed by one of these people with the burp guns. All positions had been over ran, and about only seven men of thirty-five in their platoon survived the battle. Ed was captured and was a POW for thirty-two days.
Ed is going to visit the 1st Cav Div memorial chapel in Ft. Hood soon. He promised to take a rubbing of Petes name from the Honor Roll there and send it to me. I cannot begin to tell you how wonderful filling this void of a part of my brothers life and death makes me feel. God bless you all!
