Comments: Dear Friends,
I am a military historian who would like to correspond with anyone who knew SFC Willie L. Moore, formerly of G Co. 24th Infantry, won the DSC in August of 1950 with the 24th. When the 24th disbanded due to the integration order, he went to the 7th Cav. He was killed in action on or about November 5, 1951 near Mago-ri or Sagong. I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who served with him or could relate the story of the attack in which he was killed. From the information I was able to acquire, I believe he was in B Co. Thanks.

Info on Sgt. Ralph Leonard Shaw - 7th Cav. needed urgently. |
 |
 |
Robert Shaw wrote on 2000-11-07 03:47:37.0
Comments: Ralph L. Shaw, 7th Cav.
First let me say that I am absolutely thrilled that I have found this wonderful resouce. I wish for all those seeking help the best wishes i can convey.
I am looking for my father: Ralph Leonard Shaw.
This is the extent of my knowledge of him:
He was a Canadian citizen, born in Burnaby BC (1929 ?). He was too young for WW2, so as soon as hostilities broke out in Korea he hopped a train and enlisted in the US Army in Seattle.
I have seen a photo of him after he was discharged at the end of the war, wearing his uniform. I've identified that he was a Sgt, and that he is wearing the 7th Cav patch. I was told he was a jeep jockey for a colonel in Korea, and that he was rotated home to the States to become a shooting (marksman?) instructor either during or right after the war. I do not know the accuracy of this, but was told that he had gotten poor hearing from that.
After leaving the Army he came back to Canada. Quite probably he went to Vancouver BC first, but he did live in Winnipeg Manitoba for a while, as I have my birth certificate (Nov. 6/58) to prove that. On it he was listed as a Lather (Roofer). He was married to my mother Winona (Noni for short) Shaw.
This reaches the major limits to my knowledge of him. Unfortunately it appears that they separated, and my mother has been a sphynx on the subject of him ever since. Their separation would have occured between 1959 or early 1960.
I've heard a story of what happened after that that I can neither confirm or deny. Due to the ressesion up here at the time, he supposedly went down to the States looking for work. I have been told that he ended up in Little Rock Arkansas, and that he died (possibly between 1961 and 1963) there due to a relapse of hepetitus that he originally caught over in Korea.
This is the full extent of my knowledge of him.
He may have purposely disappeared, but this has left a huge hole in my life, as I never had the chance to know him.
Since I do not know if he is dead or alive, I am hoping someone here either knew him when he was in the army and could tell me about him. Or, better, someone had kept tabs on him, or bumped into him afterward. Best scenario is that someone would know that he's still alive and could help me contact him. He would be roughly 71 years of age now.
I have tried "dancing with beaurucrats" in an effort to confirm with a death certificate that he's dead. But Arkansas needs his birthdate. The BC hospital where he was born no longer has birth records prior to 1952. And our useless federal government agency that handles that information won't give it out unless I can supply his exact whereabouts on specifics dates during our every 5 year census. Only one time I could peg him down would be when he was in Korea, but then the feds here wouldn't have counted him then. Typical. I tried the US military records avenue, but was told by them that they had a major fire in 1972 in their records warehouse. Total dead ends wherever I turn.
So, can anybody here please help me out?? This has been an ongoing mystery for me, and one which I would like to end.
My eternal thanks to all who can tell me anything from the past or current.
Sincerely,
Robert Leonard Shaw
