NEW BOOK - 76TH ENGINEER CONSTRUCTION

Comments: Love Beyond Measure
Memoirs of a Korean War Bride
By Katie Schell

Katie Schell, daughter of Pega Crimbchin (Ock Soon Lee) just
published a new book detailing her mothers journey from that
of a Korean peasant to a proud American.

The memoirs tell the story of Ock Soon Lees incredible
survival during the Korean War. While she witnessed many
Koreans and Americans die around her as the Battles for Seoul
raged on in 1950, miraculously, she survived.

The story begins with her tragic childhood as a slave for a
brutal family at the early age of seven. When she finally
finds a way out of her situation, she ends up in Seoul several
years before the outbreak of war.

After the Communist invasion, Ock Soon finds herself totally
alone, near starvation and surrounded by death. The story
tells of the extraordinary journey from Seoul to Taejon as she
escapes the city prior to the Third Battle of Seoul.

It is the remarkable story of true courage and love. It is a
story of loyalty and sacrifice. It is a story of finding faith
in the midst of unbelievable suffering. It is a story you will
never forget.

The hope is that you will find strength through this womans
faith and suffering.

Ten Percent of all proceeds from the sale of this book will
benefit drilling wells for fresh water in under developed
countries. This is at the request of Ock Soon Lee who carried
water jugs on her head for many, many years.

BOB MONAHAN wrote on December 26, 2012

City and State: ABINGTON MA

Unit: CO C 76TH ENGINEER BATTALION

Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN

Comments: I was at, (hell I helped BUILD), Camp Liberty Bell in 1967.
When we got there it was an empty field with a water tower.
We had to stay at the JSA compound while we set up our
tents
and got the camp ready for the rest of the Company to come
up from our base camp.We were Co C 76th Engineer
Battalion. Our nickname was the Liberty Bell
battalion (76
get it?)and that's how the camp got its name.We spent the
first month or so building the camp, pouring the pads for
the hootches, setting up the water point, the rock crusher
at the quarry and the Motor pool. We were already going up
into the JSA to begin work on the roads going up to
Panmunjom and doing some work in the meeting area. All the
while not knowing that we had been plunked down in the
middle of a war zone. Our first inkling came early when one
of our 'dozers broke down in the Z on the road right under
the OP on the way up to Panmunjom. We were told that we had
to provide guard duty to protect the dozer from slicky
boys That night the NKs hit the outpost and we started
taking fire from both sides because nobody had told the
outpost that we were there. We took fire about every 2
weeks
or so. But the worst happened on August 28th 1967 when
about
20 NKs opened automatic weapons fire from the surrounding
hills above the Rock quarry into our camp. It was 5PM, chow
time and the chow line was hit as was the motor pool. They
then walked their fire down the tent line and back up again
into the Mess Hall. By the time we were able to get to our
weapons, locked in the arms room which we had to break
open,
3000 thousand rounds had been fired into our camp and
we had
4 KIA and 28 WIA out of an understrength company of 87 men.
Sp/4 Michael Vogel was killed running from the motor pool
and PFC Curtis Rivers later died of wounds received in the
Mess hall where he was a cook. 2 Katusas, including the
Katusa Sgt Major, were also KIA. There was no
acknowledgment
of this sacrifice by these men. Not even the Company
yearbook for that year acknowledges they were part of the
company, let alone that they had died serving with it. I
wanted to put this on here so that those of you who have
served at Liberty Bell would know that the ground you
walked
on and the place you served at was bought at a pretty high
price and so the Names Mike Vogel and Curtis Rivers
would be
remembered as well as those others who bled at Liberty
Bell.
