Comments: the 40th was a good outfit to be with. I played country music at the clubs on base and around the small towns between Yokohama and Tokyo. If any one remembers any of this or could add to any thing and events that you would share with me during this time i would certainly appreciate it. I have a good many photos of the area and some of the personnel that were at the 40th aaa during this time. thanks wade dyson

Comments: Assigned to the 76th at K-6, Pyongtaek, in 1954, we had just erected quanset huts and a dining room, complete with outdoor movie screen. I was the projectionist as well as a radio operator. Later, the Skysweepers took over our half-tracks. When our outfit dispersed I was sent to Tachikawa, Japan, still as a radio operator then shipped home shortly thereafter. Supposedly we were one of the first outfits to intergrate. As I recall, we never had any problems with personnel. (Too busy) Have some old color slides stored away somewhere in the house. Am now 76 years of age, just retired at 75 as a medic.

Comments: I was at k6 right after the peace treaty was signed for 3mos. I was the only one that had been up at the 38th bunch bowl and chrwon. I was charge of quartes almost every week day nite. And at all the battery inspections I was given the guide on. I was there when a russian plane flew down the cost and a group of our night fighters wanted to shoot it down. They did not and it made all the news papers in the states.

My Father, Staff Sergeant George Earl Daniels II, proudly served with the 76th AAA (AW) Bn (SP) Battery D" during the Korean War.

Operating out of a Half-Track Staff Sergeant Daniels was in country from July 1950 until August 1951 and would like to know of any others from the "76th" or the 40th Bde. His leadership and strong will has been a testament to all who have known him. Being a Desert Storm Veteran myself I understand some of the tribulations he has been though, and I realize the joy he would have hearing of any follow warriors.

Comments: A group of Army and Air Force veterans who were stationed at Kamoki Air Base at Nagoya, Japan after the Korean War are planning a reunion in May 2005. Several of the Army vets of the 76th AAA Bn are interested in compiling a history of the battalion, and I am willing to put it together.

I have the pages from Kalani O'Sullivan's Kunsan Air Base web site pertaining to the 76th, some of the history of the move to Japan after the Korean armistice, and a contact who was in the 76th AAA in 1942 before the North African invasion in WWII. I live near the National Archives and will get what information is there, also I'll got to the Military History Branch.

I need stories, pictures, letters, anything about the 76th back through WWII. I especially need pictures of the halftrack with a 40mm gun mounted on the back platform and information on any battles the 76th and its batteries, platoons, and squads participated in. All material will be returned as soon as I can copy it.

If there is sufficient interest in the history, I can check out getting it published--nothing fancy to keep the price down.

I would prefer to receive material by e-mail attachments. My e-mail address is johnwcolburn@juno.com

Skysweepers at Travis AFB

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
Dan Tillmanns wrote on 2004-07-06 00:25:16.0

Comments: I was an Ordnance Integrated Fire Control repairman stationed at Travis AFB. We maintained the T 38 Skysweepers. The artillery battalion had 16 guns. 15 on station and one was always at the Presidio of San Francisco to be rebuilt. The 15 Skysweepers were distributed around the base. There was also an Ordnance artillery repair detachment.

At the time, Travis AFB had B 36 bombers and I never tired of watching and photographing them land and takeoff. Once, I visited my classmates at Castle AFB which had a similar setup but had B 52 bombers.

There were three such groups attached to the Presidio of San Francisco. The third was at March AFB. There were also Skysweepers at Loring AFB at Limestone, Maine and at Sault St Marie. There were units in England and on Okinawa.

My training began at Ft Monmouth, NJ and finished at Aberdeen Proving Grounds. There is a Skysweeper on display at Aberdeen.

The design purpose of the Skysweeper was to protect front line air fields but was never used for that.

The X band T 9 Radar Tracker mounted on the gun carriage was much fun to play with. It could track a flock of ducks. The computer was mechanical. Component resolvers, prediction unit with differential units, sets of squaring gears and so on. The idea was to transform the polar coordinates from the radar set to rectangular coordinates, predict the future position of the target and transform back to modified polar coordinates for the gun control. The modifications came from a big hourglass shaped cam which had empirically derived artillery shell characteristics ground into it. There was an optical tracking unit with the computer and the gun could be operated visually with that. We were forbidden to touch that but years later, I paid $20 for one at a surplus store. I also have a T 9 radar synchronizer, a "hot dog" unit (Ward-Leonard drive control and a 150 volt DC generator) and some other parts. The Skysweeper used an odd three phase power, 115 volts leg to leg.

The first 500 Skysweepers were made by Sperry Gyroscope Co. Later ones were made by AC Sparkplug and had all sorts of defects.

Live firing exercises were done at Camp (now Fort) Irwin where the Goldstone Tracking Station is now.

Comments: The 76th AAA AW Bn (SP) was a black enlisted/white officer unit until about Late 1951 when it was integrated. I was assigned to Btry C of the 76th in December 1951, and it was integrated then.

The 76th was assigned to the 10th AAA Group under 8th Army. All personnel wore the 8th Army patch.

The 76th AAA was awarded the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation for its service during the Korean War. The Dept of the Army General Order announcing the award was issued about 1956 or 1957, quite a while after many of the men were out of the Army. Anyone who served in the 76th during the Korean War is entitled to the award.

Kalani O'Sullivan wrote on 2002-07-07 06:32:45.0

Comments: My name is Kalani O'Sullivan and I'm writing on behalf of Yi Yong-Ku (Mike Yi). We're looking for anyone who might remember a youngster named Yi Yong-Ku who was "adopted" by the 76th AAA Battery B and brought to K-8 (Kunsan AB) when they took over the protection of Kunsan AB.

He was orphaned in Kaesong when the allies moved north and when the Chinese entered the fray, he was brought to south to Kimpo AB. When the Chinese were on the doorsteps of Seoul, Mike remembers the sound of bombs nearby.

At that time, he was loaded up on the jeeps of the 6164th "Communications Squadron" -- as he called it. Remember that he was a kid of only about 6-7 years old. He vividly remembers the fixing of radios on the jeeps and the T-6 aircraft that flew with the unit. After the Chinese were pushed out of Seoul, the unit moved to Pyongtaek and he was placed into an orphanage there when he became sick.

At Pyongtaek, a doctor became interested in him and he somehow became "adopted" by Battery B of the 76th AAA. When the unit moved to Kunsan (K-8), he moved along with them. The B-Battery was located on the south side of the runway -- near what is now the contingency pad at Kunsan AB.

Though many names came and went over the course of the war, he remembers the following names of some men from the B-Battery because they saved his life. The names are:

Sgt Boseman (Tennessee) Sgt Sutton (Indiana) Sgt Carroway (Texas) Lt. Coolidge

He got sick and was sent to the International Orphanage downtown -- that still exists today. After the 76th AAA departed Kunsan, he was sent to the Cheju Island orphanage.

Mike's story goes on and on, but the bottom line is that he has headed the Kunsan AB Hobby Shop for many years and has five daughters (four graduated from college and the last studying International Affairs.) A devout Christian he praises God for his salvation...and of course, continues to be grateful to the GIs who saved his life. He wants to thank them personally.

If any of you know of him or any of the men on list, we would like to reunite him with his benefactors. Please email me.

Comments: The 76th AAA AW Bn (SP) was NOT deactivated at Camp Drake, Japan, in 1954.

It was converted to a 75mm Skysweeper Battalion and, after training with the new equipment, was stationed at Nagoya Air Base south of Tokyo.

I had been in the 76th from Dec. 52 to Dec. 53 when I transfered to the Far East AAA Specialist School at Hyoshi, Japan. I was an instructor on the Skysweeper, teaching gunnery and materiel to Skysweeper section chiefs and battery and battalion officers, including those from the 76th.

I went down to the 76th at Nagoya twice as part of the 40th AAA Brigade Commander's inspection team in 1954 and 1955.

Comments: I was in 2nd platoon Btry D 76th AAA Aw Bn (SP)at K-8 Kunsan Air Base from July 1952 to the middle of January 1953. I was Squad leader of position Dog 222. This was a Quad 50 Cal machine gun mounted on a half-track. The names of the people in this squad were Farrill, Makela, Climpson, Cuevas and White. The best I remember our position was at the southern end of the runway, and to the west a few yards just inside the fence by the Yellow Sea.

Comments: I was in 1st Platoon, Btry C, 76th AAA Bn (AW)(SP)from Dec.'52 until Dec.'53 at K-8 Air Base (Kunsan) and after the Armistice at K-6 Air Base (Pyontaek). I was section chief of 4th Section (C141 and C142) for a couple of months then Platoon Sergeant of 1st Platoon. Platoon Leader was Lt. James DeNault most of that time. Lt. Jack Younce was the Btry Commander most of that time. Cager A. Parsons was First Sergeant.

I'm interested in contacting any one from Btry C and in pictures, old manuals, and any information about the single 40-mm gun half-track and M-16 Quad-50 half-track and revetments used at K-8. Also, I'd be interested in any information about the history, pictures, etc. about the 76th during the earlier part of the Korean War.

Comments: I was a platoon leader in D Btry from August 50 to Mar 51 when I became Btry Cmdr of Hq Btry for a couple of months until Capt. Wilbur Rawlins took over. D Btry had led the way for the Bn from the time we landed in Pusan and moved up to Taegu on the perimeter. From there we moved to Seoul, then Pyongyang (NK capital) and further north to Sinanju (K-29) airbase. Our next objective was K-30 at Sinuiju by the Yalu River but the Chinese put a crimp in that journey. I did reconnoiter to a few miles of K-30 when I notice there wasn't any garbage such as candy wrappers, cigarette butts or tin cans littering the country side. That was enough to tell me that I was in advance of our infantry. So I told my driver and Kim that we had better "bug on out". A few days later the Chinese chased us out of the area.

Comments: My Dad, Max West, and his twin brother, my uncle Ralph West, from Calhoun, Ga served in Battery C, 76th AAA from late 1952 until the move to Japan in 1954. They were very small (about 5'5") in hright and stature, identical twins with black hair. Their friends that they spoke about were a fellow named Cantrell and a guy named Peacock. My dad has been dead now for 9 years, and my uncle Ralph is in bad health. As a 2 enlistment Marine, I am very interested in their unit history, as almost nothing is in print about actions that the unit was involved in. I would also like to speak to anyone that may remember them. Thank You.

My Father, Staff Sergeant George Earl Daniels II, proudly served with
the 76th AAA (AW) Bn (SP) Battery D" during the Korean War.

Operating out of a Half-Track Staff Sergeant Daniels was in country from
July 1950 until August 1951 and would like to know of any others from
the "76th" or the 40th Bde. His leadership and strong will has been a
testament to all who have known him. Being a Desert Storm Veteran myself
I understand some of the tribulations he has been though, and I realize
the joy he would have hearing of any follow warriors.
